I heard this again the other day on BBC radio 3. It had haunted me for years, and having listened to it again I realised how vital the part Peter Pears plays in this performance. His voice sounds so wonderful, and somehow captures the isolation needed for this part.
I'm afraid I'm going to upset the applecart and realise that a lot will disagree with me!
This is, to me, the worst possible example of taking a much respected old folk song and mangling it into something unrecognisable.
At least the vocalist avoids sounding like a chicken being strangled that was Pears did.

This has always been my favourite setting of the Lyke-Wyke Dirge. This is a great performance.
