What does your dog do in terms of daily rigorous activity? I'm assuming you don't live on a farm. I'd like to own a blue heeler, but it says everywhere they should really only be used for herding. And chances are, I won't have a farm.
@RabbitCTRL When my mum and dad had a blue heeler about 9ish years ago, he never had exercise and he lived for 11 years now I have a BH (6 months old) and I walked him everyday (except in summer because its 40 degrees in Aus) for about an hour and had breaks in the park. You don't need a farm!
I taught my ACD that when I say "MOTE" he starts looking for the TV remote control and if he finds it he brings it to me. He also has the basics (rollover, shake, play dead) but when I have tried to get him to play fetch he will go get the ball/stick 1 time. If I throw it again he just looks at me like I am stupid and refuses to go and get it.
I have a wonderful and smart cattle dog too, Asja. My friend who is a vet and dog trainer breeds Kelpies and trains them for tv commercials, one such trick for a tv ad was similar to what you did in that the dog supposedly LOVES the food (from the ad) so much he will open the fridge and get the food out to feed himself. It was a great trick until she had to buy a new fridge because no matter how she closed, locked or barricaded it, the dog could open that particular fridge from that day on!!!
I have a thirteen month old ACD that is pretty smart. I am having problems with retrieving though. She loves to fetch, but isn't great on bringing stuff back. Do you have any tricks for shaping behaviors? Like for the fridge, did you just show her how to pull the rag so she could get treats inside? Great video!
Awww...now that's the kind of dog I want. Never heard of a Cattle dog before. Your dog is very smart. Seems like you love him/her very much. Makes me want to get a smart dog soon or eventually. I bet you put a lot of training with your dog. I think it also depends on the Master's patience which I'm sure you have. Take care =)
