I agree. For those of us that use both PC's & Mac's there is little reason to go with a new Mac Mini, it's just not as practical nor is it really any better then most average priced desktops. It's another Mac Trick for those that only choose to use mac, when will they learn. Don't buy it just because it;'s a mac buy it because it's better then the others. If it isn't then maybe Mac will get the message and improve their lines. Maybe even live up to their name for a change. Thanks good review!
I think its important to note that you can buy the external superdrive (in the U.S. it is $79) and take note that the mini is $100 less than the previous generation. What bothers me more is that as you said, there will be a slight increase in cable clutter (even though it is only one very short cable), and the solution will not look as clean. The mini (except server model) still has the space for the optical drive, but now it is empty inside and wasted space.
@gxcad I think they shouldn't have removed the drive from the mini 'cause lots of people still need it .I know that in the future people tend to use less optical drives but NOT now .
@MrCombatveteran Thank you sir .I'm thinking of having my own site .I'm finding a sponsor.'cause in Thailand the income from Apple store is very low .Thanks for your kind advise .
@exposed97 You are perfectly right for that but now we still need the dvd drive .Sometime too far advance is doesn't mean better .For instance the Thunderbolt port that made people couldn't find a cheap harddrives for it now .They might have to wait another 3 years.
Mark, thanks for the great review (as always). I read in your comments that you would recommend the iMac rather than the Mac Mini because of the CPU. I am concerned about this since I have just read that Apple is notifying individuals who purchased the Mid-2011 iMac about a Seagate HDD recall. Even after this, would it still be wise to get the iMac or should I get a Mac Mini with the new ThunderBolt display?
@wrassmussen Thanks for your kind comments (as always).Get the iMac and before you leave the store ask the sales person their to check if your iMac is on the defectives list .Don't worry 'cause now apple has switch to another company for the harddrive. If your iMac is on the list you have the right to as for a new one before you leave the store .Don't worry 'cause not every iMacs didn't come with a defected drives .It's worth to take the risk and the free exchange will available 'till July 2012
Well you can add the ram for only $30 or $40 for 4gb if you dont updrade it from the apples opions cus apple charges $100 for just 2gbs more, instead with those $100 you can updrade it up to 8gb!
What's the audio like on the air I know the mbp had better audio for games and movies as it supported 5.1 surround where the mba 2010 only supported stereo.
not if you buy ram out side apple on amazon $70 for 8gb the exact same ram you buy from apple it is purely stupid to wast an extra $200 for only .2Ghz more and in comparison of the graphics ya the $799 is better but not by enough of a margin for the average consumer (and dont bring up the argument for a hard core gamer because this is one of the last ones they would pick)
@StephenBecht I respect your point of view .I meant if some ladies doesn't want to get to all the hassles of changing things but yes for someone who knows how for deeper technics would be a great benefit .
@StardollConfidential Mac mini is a Mac CPU that allows you to reuse your existing monitor ,mouse, keyboard etc. but if you have nothing now I would suggest the iMac .
@pubate1 Yes, I am getting the iMac put on lay away at my local Best Buy store & I plan on getting the iPad 2 to replace my iPad 1. Are they working on a new iPad? I would hate to buy the latest verision just to get it trumped by the latest and greatest that comes out like 2 days later. x
