@oldstock1607 Chances of China, US or Russia engaging directly over a third-party are remote, but still a possibility. For example, what if China invades Taiwan? Pretty unlikely event as China wants peace times to prevail.
However, helping your rival's enemy is what both China & Russia are certain to do as they did in Vietnam. That's a very plausible scenario and one that should concern US greatly.
Having said that, a never ending war is a nightmare no country wants and Iran will be just that.

@PTIKhan I sincerely doubt that either China or Russia would risk embroiling themselves in a war (even a proxy war) over the likes of Iran. China's trade with the U.S. is far too important for them to throw away over iran, and Russia has internal problems too great to permit similar action. And I must say, I don't think it would be a "never ending war." The U.S. destroyed the Iraqi military in 102 hours in the first gulf war, and this was after they had handed Iran a decisive defeat.
