  • @Germal59 She IS deaf! Just because she is great at music and is NOT stone deaf, just very deaf, doesn't mean she isn't deaf (if this makes sense!). Also, we AREN'T STUPID, we know how she does her music: she can feel out the vibration of her music! She writes about in her autobiography: Good Vibrations! So, you Sir/Mam, are stupid!

  • why is this not captioned?

  • sorry, I'm usually not rude to people i've never met before, but you were asking for it man.

  • haha, well maybe she's not deaf but you can't even form intelligent sentences Germal59. So tell me again, who are you calling stupid?

  • whether she is deaf or hard of hearing, she is still legally deaf.

  • she learned how to talk before she started going deaf.

  • No profanities on this channel please

  • What did I do?

  • She had full hearing when she was little and during that time began playing music. This of course helped her switch to percussion and continue on to a successful career in music after the hearing loss began. Having some partial hearing remain helps too....but don't discredit her abilities just because they seem too fantastic - how many people with full hearing can do this?

  • I am tired of people arguing over her deafness level. She is a talented percussionist, deaf or not. It is esp. tiring hearing people argue deaf over hard of hearing. People can be called legally blind but still see a little, why not the same with deafness? She probably had to play loud at first to get a sense of how things sounded, but after a while, she knew what the music felt and sounded like, so she could tone it down. That's how I believe she can play like she can.

  • Apparently she is only half deaf. And with all due respect, that is possible. Beethoven also lost his hearing, all of it eventually, and he continued to compose music and play music. If you make a deep connection with music it can sometimes become something that goes beyond hearing.

ya, that sounds strange and perhaps stupid, but i've found it to be true

  • Thank you Wheel83 for making sense in all this.

Music can go beyond "hearing". This is what Evelyn

Glennie demonstrates so beautifully. And no, she is

not stone deaf, but she is still hearing impaired!!!

And she does what she does both in spite of it and because of it. I for one, love what she has taught me.She has given me a deeper relationship with music, and I thank her for that.

  • Germal59 I am deaf as well Evelyn Glennie can't be deaf how can she do all various music instrumental without mistake that impossible for a deaf person to do that like you mention why all hearing believe she is deaf they must be stupid, she a con

  • shes profoundly deaf, she can only hear blurry sounds i did an essay on her

  • to icyfire011, I don't believe you been essay on Evelyn Glennie you're a bummer

  • icyfire011 - there no need foul language ok goodbye my love lol

  • I just found out that she's not deaf

  • she can only hear a tiny bit shes PROFOUNDLY deaf

  • well I've research her and found she not deaf she is hard of hear mean can hear some if she really deaf she'll impossible to do music things, profoundly deaf means can't hear, hard of hearing means can hear some

  • It is very rare for a deaf person to be '100 %' deaf. Most deaf people are what is called profoundly deaf, i.e. they have such extensive hearing loss that even the few sounds they do hear are garbled and useless to their daily functioning.

  • well I am deaf i can't do music instrumental it useless cos I;m deaf how evelyn call herself deaf yet she can do any music instrumental etc... and she could talk ok I can't???? I use sign language she can't. she in hearing world not deaf world

  • She was a hearing child until the age of twelve and therefore was able to learn to talk perfectly, before she became deaf. Those who were able to hear and speak language before deafness have an easier time with lipreading than those who have been deaf since birth (and so must rely on sign language). I don't know what instruments she plays, but they look like mostly percussion - she feels the vibrations. And she is PROFOUNDLY deaf, not 100% deaf.

  • songoftheopenroad - wtf why are you believe her if she really is deaf that impossible to use music things. Profoundly deaf mean can't hear anything hard of hearing mean can hear some but I do feel vibrations but don't know what it is but if you are deaf you'll understand

  • All I am saying is the argument that she must not be deaf because she can play a percussion instrument is not a sufficient argument. Profoundly deaf means unable to hear sounds below 90 dec. A profoundly deaf person may be able to hear a gunshot, jackhammer, or loud motor. I understand that you cannot hear anything; this doesn't mean that all profoundly deaf people have the level of hearing loss you do.

BTW, what Helen Keller learned to do was considered impossible for a blind-deaf-mute.

  • songoftheopenroad - I'm not agrue with you. Evelyn Glennie is not deaf that it and no more saying it

  • she is shes profoundly deaf

  • She not profoundly deaf she is hard of hearing, Profoundly deaf mean can't hear anything, She was born in Scotland and now live in England knowing that Scottish people knew she not deaf however I think you are liar like evelyn you didn't essay on her cos you live in Australia

  • icyfire011 - mind you I am deaf I can hear with help by my hearing aid but I couldn't try any music things but Evelyn don't have hearing aid so she can hear music

  • she's profound.

  • for being profoundly deaf, shes hella good

  • it takes more than deafness to stop such awesome musicians such as Evelyn Glennie or Beethoven

  • it takes more than deafness to stop such awesome musicians such as Evelyn Glennie or Beethoven

  • So does she do lile outright drum solos on the kit??

I saw a brief interview on telly and she seems very cool and classy!

  • shes deaf! i feel so useless as a percussionist...well not useless now im insipired!

  • Rofl thats my music teachers best friend. she came to my school.

  • she cant be human.... if you like her marimba playing check out eric sammut and pedro carneiro....and for multi stuff check out steve schick
