  • Tecmo Bowl > Madden NFL

  • lol @ Bo and his 50-yd runs!

  • Cap Bozo

  • This was not the first release rosters! Tony Dorsett played for the Cowbows and Eric Dickerson played with the L.A Rams! The first relase was the best, as people retired or trades the rosters change but it was still called Techmo Bowl.

  • you forgot Mike Singletary

  • where was thurman thomas?

  • @TheSuperSqueegy The Bills were on Super Tecmo Bowl. This is the original Tecmo Bowl list

  • what version is this its not super techmo bowl i know that much.

  • @droan999 read the description. It's Tecmo Bowl. Not Tecmo Super Bowl. It was the first Tecmo Bowl game on NES.

  • He ranked the 10 first Tecmo Bowl players:the Oilers were not on the 1st tecmo bowl.

  • was hoping to see ray childres in there during this time oilers were a good team and on this game i played a season with ray getting over 99 sacs in one season.warren moon was almost as good as joe in this game as well.

  • i never picked pass plays when playing defense against the raiders

  • Bo Jackson was a beast. Fast as hell

  • "looked" u must have been playing against scrubs, I am a gmen fan n I had da greatest d ever n my brother would get 500 rushing yds easy on me n any 1 he played, n ya we picked Bo play every down n so did he!

  • @Lordezz1980 u dont know how many times we talk about this which team was better and hands down i would say 49rs cause of the double run n pass threat but bo jackson i think should be tied as number 1 because hands down that match up is like ali vs frazier its too dam close to call

  • 1. Bo 2.Walter p 3. Lt 4.Jerry rice 5. Dennis gentry 6. Ronnie lott 7. Joe Montana 8. Mark bavaro 9. Dave duerson 10. Hersal walker!

  • Bo Jackson isn't the best player based on the fact that he only has 1 play. You can take him out of the game completely by choosing that play all time, since there is no other way to get him the ball. He's only good when you play against the computer. Payton and Rice are impossible to stop because they can touch the ball on 3 plays.

  • Fuck that!

Christian Okoye was the best in the game.(although not in real life)

    He had 99 strength.

Once you gave him the ball, it was over.

  • @TLydon011 Technically yes, but that was Tecmo Super Bowl, this was the original Tecmo Bowl...

  • Marcus Allen? Mike Singletary? Dennis Gentry (the best kick returner on the game)? Roger Craig? All those guys were better than Morris, Walker, and Dickerson on the game.

  • Man, I miss that game!

  • Hahaha they even referenced and showed his Tecmo Bowl highlights on an NFL Network Top-10 Special!!!

  • walter n bo all day b4 the cheat code THEY WAS A CHEAT CODE

  • Great game! I beat (human) opponents with Hanford Dixon. I'm sorry he's not on the list.

  • No Okoye?

    No Heyward?

    No Sanders?

    I do not approve, pal.

  • @Shutesumfools same here but i do remember the 1st tech didn't have all the nil teams i believe just playoff teams were on the game

  • @Shutesumfools This is Tecmo Bowl, not Tecmo Super Bowl.

  • @Shutesumfools none of thos eplayers are in it goofass

  • @Shutesumfools Those guys were only in Super Tecmo Bowl. This is for the original Tecmo Bowl

  • How is the Lawrence Taylor highlight NOT of him blocking an extra point?!

  • u fergot marcus allen... he was just as good

  • I STILL have callouses on my left thumb from this game. BEST EVER!

  • I agree with Bo at #1 but I would put Howie Long at #2 and Lawrence Taylor at #3. I would pick off passes all day with both. I rank Howie higher cuz I;m a Raiders fan hahaha

  • I havent even watch it yet..but nobody was better than walter payton on this game. Nobody. I'mabout to watch and them i'll finish the comment...lets see. ahhhh....I'm right these guys are wrong walter payton was the best!!

  • This was a combo of tecmo bowl and tecmo super bowl.

  • No Nigerian Nightmare?

  • This list is incredibly biased towards offensive players. LT was far and away #1. Any number of Bears defensive players could have been in the top 10. Probably Duerson and Singletary both. Cap Boso also deserves a mention.

  • Why was Barry Sanders left out?

  • Wait, you didn't have Marcus Allen on that list?! Travesty! ~LOL~ To me, Payton was the best on the game, he ran EVERYONE over! Bo Jackson was the fastest. I had the edition that had Eric Dickerson, my best friend had Albert Bentley. The game was greatness in a box!

  • What about qb eagles? Haha!

  • wow, what memories. I played this game for hours

  • what about untackleable christian okoye

  • @circuiser That's Tecmo Super Bowl. This is Tecmo Bowl

  • Marino? Miami stunk in this game haha - not as bad as the Dolphins do today, mind you.

  • Best player in this game is Dan Marino.

  • I have 2 versions of Tecmo Bowl, fro Game Boy and NES, and I've never seen Eric Dickerson on the games. The RB on both is Albert Bentley.

  • @uofm97 Dickerson was only available on certain copies of the NES version, due to some sort of player association licensing issue.

  • @BrentZeppelin1975 Hmm, I see. Any idea on how to tell which version he's on? lol

  • @uofm97 Easiest way to do it is pop in the game and let the intro play out. Indy is the first team and look for RB 29 DICKER... other than that, not that I know of. I have to admit, I love having a copy with him in it... couldn't tell you if they make Bentley just as effective (I'd have to get a copy and compare), but back in 1989, it just "feels right" to have Eric DICKerson on the Colts. =)

  • @BrentZeppelin1975 I think they did make him that good because the first game I played after I bought my copy was Raiders vs Colts and Mr. Bentley ran for 389 yards and 3 TDs (I swear I'm not making that up). I still won, but I was still pissed that I gave up so many yards to guy no one knows about, lol! On the Genesis version, I never pick run plays on defense because if they passed, I would get burned. So I did that on the NES one and paid for it, lol. Still, this is one of my favorites.

  • my brother and i had some classic match ups on this game. Raiders vs 49ers or Oiler vs Bills.

  • bo jackson was the first sports game cheat like when madden players picked vick in 04 i think.

  • bwerry sanders was so hack in this game 500 yards a game.

  • Both Bo Jackson and Marcus Allen are my picks for best players in the game. I have never really been a fan of the Raiders but back in the day, they were all right!!

  • CAP BOSO? was the best player in the game man

  • What About Kevin Mack? That dude was unstoppable.

  • dont forget about minnifield and dixon on d for the browns and marcus allen 4 the raiders

  • At least show the whole play. What would that have taken another 1:30?

  • Where's barry sanders?!

  • @zachweber No kidding, and Christian Okoye, the Nigerian Nightmare. He would break tackles like no other sucker in the game! Anyway, Super Tecmo Bowl was better because you could injure people!!

  • Sorry, but I actually like Tecmo Super Bowl better. Don't get me wrong, this is an amazing game, but I really recommend playing Super Bowl also because that game is amazing.

  • Christian Okoye shoulda been #1 i was unstoppable with the chiefs.....CLASSIC!!

  • @PNAS99 No kidding! Him in real life and on the game is the reason I am a Chiefs fan. There's just something cool about a giant man as a running back.

  • GOOD LIST

  • Comment removed

  • Christian Okoye on the Chiefs was unstoppable. Could run through anyone.

  • dude i had this game as a kid. where are barry sanders and emmit smith on this list?? i killed with them.

  • @mynameisntsteven this is the original tecmo bowl, ur thinking of super tecmo bowl which i think was better because it was the first of it's kind to include every team and also stats.

  • @atdawnwewagedwar ohhh, well that was the better game lol

  • In super tecmo bowl you didn't want anybody using the bills or the giants. Those teams were off limits.

  • Barry Sanders, from far.

  • Elway was the fastest Qb in the game. Can't sleep on Kevin Mack or Eric Dickerson either..

  • this list i cant really argue with. all of these players were good

  • randall cunningham..aka QB Eagles

  • Hello?! Berry Sanders

  • where was mike singletary on this list? i remember winning games with him and never having 2 take an offensive snap

  • where was mike singletary on this list? i remember winning games with him and never having 2 take an offensive snap

  • bo is only first cause he was fast. payton and rice are better than him though. i wouldn't had montana in it

  • best LB was lawrence taylor the "real" LT.

i once played a season and had 122 sacks, one game i had 19. he was so fast... one of a couple players who culd tackle Bo on his own.

  • Best defensive player on Tecmo bowl was Mike Singletary and because of that Chicago had the best denfense. I always used Singletary as a hybrid. He lined up close enogh to the LOS to support the run quick but he also could cover alot a ground in the secondary.

  • LT was better then ronnie Lott he should be 3rd

  • this and double dribble were 2 of my favorite games, my all time favorite was NHL 98 for PC a classic

  • Bo Jackson was the player in tecmo bowl. IDK why but i just for some reason saw my NES emulator on my desktop and was like oh yeah it's tecmo bowl time.

  • WTF?

The quarterbacks were all the same. The list isn't correct either. Lot of defensive players were way higher up than the ones listed.

    Howie Long? Helllloooo!

  • howie long was a beast bro:)

  • @ihavesexforhappymeal The QB's did not have the same abilities. Elway, Montana and Marino had some of the strongest arms. Trudeau, Schroeder, and Kramer had weaker arms.

  • @TECMOBOWLvsRBI

They could all throw the ball from end zone to end zone. Your argument is invalid.

  • @ihavesexforhappymeal

Yes, they all can throw from endzone to endzone against the computer....but when playing 2 player mode against a competent opponent that ploy is irrelevant because the human defender can cover the deep man.

Thats when the strong arm of Montana vs Trudeau's noodle arm makes a huge difference when you have to be able to thread the needle in certain situations.

  • ok you fuckers made me do it. gotta break out my nes........

  • those where the real players.

  • Bo Jackson was unstoppable! He had a stiff arm that would knock down anyone. He was also very fast. My little brother and I put countless hours into this game back in the late 80's.

  • This was the best video game. Ever.

  • @BrightOranje

Agreed.... I liked Tecmo 2 limited edition for the SNES also.. But no doubt this game is legendary... My only wish is that you could extend the length of the quarters.... Those tecmo seconds go bye quickly... But it is a great great game...

  • @5555eggfuzz No genius. Peyton Manning wasn't playing the pro game in early 90s. Come on use your head kid.

  • Yeah thats what I thought. I just needed to be sure.

  • Early 90s? No genius. This game came out in 1988. Come on use your head, kid.

  • this game came out in 89 son get yo head rite yo

  • Joe montana should've been first he is awesome

  • congratulations and thank you for tecmo for this awesome game :)

  • QB Eagles???

  • This is Tecmo Bowl, not Tecmo Super Bowl.

  • @drstclair what about him?

  • Randall Cunningham

  • great list, but I would include Jay Schroeder somewhere on there. he's the only QB in that game, who could throw from one end zone to the other.

  • Have you heard of Joe Montana? You obviously haven't.

  • hell ya. L.T was the only player who could block field goals and extra points on that game.

  • you are wrong. The cue was to count the order of the defensive when you selected on a defense formation. For example u had to click B button 7 times to pick LT on a defense formation, same number of picks on a field goal block formation. Michael Carter from the 49ers was 2 clicks so i clicked the button 2 times on field goal formation and i got Michael Carter and now you could block the field goal. Same for every team with at least 1 defensive with 13+ sacks (wich determined speed of the player)

  • when i said defensive i meant defensive player. :)

  • @pae39 huh?? what are you trying to say about the position? im not saying your wrong just dont quite follow.

  • When you start a defensive play, u begin with a player selected by default... lets say it is the LE. Now, if u played with the Giants and wanted to pick LT u needed to click the A or B button "n times" to get to LT ok? In a Field goal formation that "n times" applied too. In tecmo bowl, the Field goal block team is the same defense team. If you click that button "n times" you'll get to LT in the field goal formation. Same happened with other good defensive men in other teams.

  • #1 LT

    #2 CAP BOSO

    IMO

  • can you download this for PC plz answer

  • I heard a rumor that you can find a program called RockNES X and you can Google find it. I even heard you can find the games themselves if you look hard enough. Not sure though. I have my own NES and I have this game.

  • not a rumor.

  • I was just subtly answering buddies question.

  • yes, you need an emulator.

  • howie long is a beast on raiders... can be used as the answer to ronnie lott they're both super fast

  • What about Barry Sanders? I tore it up with him.

  • Detroit aren't in this game.

  • I remember playing this game with the Lions when I was like 6. Maybe it was a different one.

  • That'd be Tecmo SUPER Bowl. This is the original and it had the Colts, the Dolphins, the Browns, the Broncos, the Seahawks, the Raiders, the Redskins, the 49ers, the Cowboys, the Giants, the Bears and the Vikings.

  • Oh my bad.

  • What about Art Monk? Redskins?

  • Great list. But where's Cap Boso? His play was unstoppable!

  • Walter Payton #1

  • Bo Knows Tecmo Bowl

  • Ronnie Lott lol, exactly who I was looking for on defense.

  • Chirstian Okoya anyone?

  • he forgot Kevin Mack... he was the only player in the game who had a play that would beat the blitz every time if done right... Kevin Mack was better than at least half that list

  • i loved tecmo bowl

    those were the days

off topic but i used to be rank 3 in killzone 2

  • So many legends......

  • Dude...any list that did not have LT at #1 is laughable.

Mike Singletary needs to be in the top ten too...prob #2 or #3. He was diesel and also his strategic placement at middle linebacker made him a force on every play. LT was kinda handcuffed being on the bottom outside defensive End.

Maybe you should create an all time tecmo offense and defensive players.

  • Would anyone recommend this game for download on Virtual Console and why. I'd like to know. I used to have this on an old NES, but I haven't played it very much. It was mostly my brother playing it. And, when I look at footage of this game, it looks like it's too easy. Could also just be because of the experience of the people playing. I'd like to know why should I get this for Virtual Console. I have some interest, but am not 100% sure of if I would like to get this game.

  • I would get it, it's a classic game with classic gameplay. I bought it on my girlfriends Wii and played against her 8 year old nephew, he loved it(Even though I showed him no mercy) its timeless.

  • Okay. Thanks for the recommendation.

  • so, you canplay it only on wii know?

  • @daOriGinooGrapeBeer so, you can play it only on wii know? how?

  • @daOriGinooGrapeBeer so, you can play it only on wii know? how?

  • He forgot the monster on the Giant's Defense... so bad that they put him on a game of his own... BLITZ: The League.

Lawrence Taylor (Sorry if I mispelled)

The fastest dude on the game, because of the defensive speed increases you got.

  • No, he included LT in number 6.

  • Everybody is always giving Bo credit, and he deserves it, he was great. But give me sweetness any day of the week.

  • u forgot the late great derrick thomas KC

and thurman thomas was a mean running back to use

    barry sanders

but thats if u included some of the others aside tecmo bowl

  • that was the SNES version.

  • I believe John Elway was the best on that game especially for him to only have Mark Jackson and he was a decent not great receiver. John Elway could scramble well too, he could bring a team back from a lost just the same.

  • what a game and what a list-although i got LT as number one

  • no Lawrence Taylor on that list ????

getting 10 sacks a game minimum and blocking every PAT is not enough ???

  • Did you fall asleep through #6 or something

  • i think he was just automatically asssuming taylor was #1 and was kind of waiting..i was, and missed LT at 6..

any original tecmo bowl list that dosent have LT as #1 is an epic fail!!!

  • ha i had 32 sack with pierce holt when i played my last season of tecmo super bowl

  • Bo Jackson Is # 1

  • LOL. Good memories. Actually I always thought Lawrence Taylor was far and away the most unstoppable player in that game.

  • how did you not put barry sanders on this list. Howie Long was just as good any other d lineman too. Christian Okoye was unstoppable he broke tackles every time.

  • This was the original, Detroit and KC weren't in it.

  • How is Lawrence Tayloer not #1? You could tackle the holder on all field goals and PATs before your opponent could get enough juice to make the kick. Dan Marino was the only QB that could avoid the "guaranteed"interception if they D called your play. Out of the shot gun formation if you immediately pass the ball, they cannot interecept it.

  • Bo Jackson is so fast barry sanders to if you run up and down touchdown everytime

  • my friends and I would have endless tournaments in tecmo and super tecmo. we would get really intense and it would always lead to someone getting angry. the season mode in super tecmo with stat keeping was amazing!

  • Dan Marino may be the best in the game. He rifled the shit out of the ball.

  • Dude, thats Lawrence Taylor, he is on the list.

  • Man TODD BELL on the bears... he could intercept anything... pick him.. i dare you

  • My goodness I love me this game. Bo Jackson and Marcus Allen was the real thing. The Raiders were not fair but they were rediculously sick.

  • First Tecmo Bowl and Tecmo Super Bowl MVP-----BO JACKSON!!! The guy was sick quick and could not be stopped.

  • that was a great game on NES. great i tell you.

  • Kevin Mack/Herschel Walker/Bo Jackson all could truck defenders without having to wrestle them off. Best WRs: Jerry Rice (by far) was the quickest. Also, worth mentioning: Gary Clark/Anthony Carter/Steve Largent & Tim Brown (maybe) TEs: Todd Christensen/Mark Bavaro & worth mentioning is Ozzie Newsome. Defense: Redskins had the best collection of Defensive players worth using. Chicago & New York had the best Defenses in the game. LT/Ronnie Lott are the 2 best followed closely by Singletary

  • Ok, let me help some of you out! This is the "ORIGINAL" Tecmo Bowl...not Tecmo "Super" Bowl...key word "SUPER." Now, best QBs (Montana/Elway/Marino) Montana & Marino had 3 passing plays to choose from. Elway was the quickest QB. Best running backs (Bo Jackson was the best blend of speed/power--could run over anyone) next is a toss up btwn Eric Dickerson (4 those of u who played this version & not the one where Colts had Bentley at RB) & Walter Payton. Herschel was a bit slow but had power!

  • best game of all time hands down

  • I respect your top ten, but where in the world is BARRY SANDERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • to all who keep asking about Barry Sanders, etc: these clips are clearly from the FIRST Tecmo Bowl, which only had 13 teams

  • hey dahoss barry wasn't in the first tecmo bowl

  • Hell you forgot Barry Sanders. Top five easy!!

  • where is mike singletary?! that guy was a beast.

  • What about that random dude on the Giants' kick block team?

You couldn't kick anything besides an extra point or else it would be blocked. That guy was the single best player in the game.

  • That "random guy" for the giants was LT. Carl Banks was awefully good too, but the best kickblocker in the entire game was Michael Carter of the 49ers. He was a couple steps closer to the holder on kicks so you could get in much quicker. Even Xtra points would get blocked.

  • bo jackson could beat entire teams by himself in this game, unfortunately you cannot remove the entire offensive line and just let bo snap the ball to himself and then absolutely decimate the defenses.

  • #1 should be rice.. when u are playing against him.. once he leaves your screen its automatic six
