Before you claim to be that sure about how much people care about ideas, how about you take into account that "sending money to 3rd world countries" isn't necessarily going to help the people there? First off, in many of those places government corruption would prevent the money from even getting to the people in the first place...
You're confusing charity with socialism. Socialism is forced appropriation to create a national credit card of sorts that works until the country can no longer repay its debts. Our desire for health coverage is unlimited, but our productive capacity to finance it is not. That is why prices are so high and quality so poor in government models. If it's just a national credit card whose compounding interest we finance with taxes, what's stopping a servicer from charging as much as he can?
I don't want to give anyone money. I'm just pointing out the fact that the healthier everyone else is, the less likely it is for you to have bad health (I'm strictly talking about infectious diseases). I'm not even proposing universal healthcare as a solution.

I watched the ad because I'm genuinely interested in Congressman Paul's stance on this. I couldn't tell heads from tails what his plan was. "He's a doctor. He's seen it all," may be true, but it doesn't say anything about his plan!!! Welfare is a fraud. The rich don't actually pay for the welfare, you do. If you attempt to tax the rich, they will just raise prices to compensate for the loss in income. dabigkid - AA is debatable, my personal beliefs are that AA was appropriate in the early 70s because the minority workforce attended segregated schools, which were very poor, and in 2007 I don't believe AA is necessary anymore. Segregation is NOT debatable, it's NOT supported by either party, and the more you argue in favor of legalizing it the more you make Ron Paul look like a fool.

I hate to sound cold but the world is about survival of the fittest- the reason we have so many sick people is because we didn't have the means and drugs in the past to keep people alive. I'm all for saving lives, but is it right to prolong a person's suffering and go against nature?
I'm familiar with that argument, but to be honest, is it ethical? If you support a darwinian type culture (i.e. where the strong survive and the weak die), is that really ethical? And what if someone, like in Africa, is born into a poor, starved area and never had the chance to become strong and healthy? You have to ask yourself, is that really ethical?
I definitely understand what you're saying. I fully support helping third world countries. I think that in developed nations, especially America, we should concentrate more on preventing certain health issues (heart attacks, emphysema, osteoperosis) rather than finding solutions to something that could have easily been prevented.

There are so many people with unpreventable disorders and diseases that are able to live normal lives because of our advanced medical techniques, and I am extremely grateful for that. Germs are primarily spread via close contact, and especially through food. I don't know where you heard sharing food prevented sickness, but it isn't correct. It is true that you need food more than medicine. Food helps you live and correct food will help you live longer. However medicine will help you live longer as well, which is why they are both a necessity.
Germs can make you sick but medicine can kill. Have you ever heard of Viox? Many other medicines can shorten your life as well. Perhaps you should do more research about this.

And another thing police and firemen are controlled at a local level. If my doctor was contracted by the city or county in which I lived then that would be one thing, like my police officers and firemen are. @ASLforever100 He's against social security philosphically but has stated repeatedly that's the last thing he wants to cut when he becomes president. Those people receiving benefits paid into the system so those obligations should be honored. Ironically RP's cost cutting in defense and government waste would be the only way to keep SS and Medicare affordable. He also wants to provide young people an option to opt out, which is great.

You're confusing charity with socialism. Socialism is forced appropriation to create a national credit card of sorts that works until the country can no longer repay its debts. Our desire for health coverage is unlimited, but our productive capacity to finance it is not. That is why prices are so high and quality so poor in government models. If it's just a national credit card whose compounding interest we finance with taxes, what's stopping a servicer from charging as much as he can?

I don't want to give anyone money. I'm just pointing out the fact that the healthier everyone else is, the less likely it is for you to have bad health (I'm strictly talking about infectious diseases). I'm not even proposing universal healthcare as a solution.

the problem with life expectancy is that it doesn't really tell you how the people are dying. we could claim that it's from disease, but it might also be from murders and other violent things. i.e. gang violence killing people when they're 18. lots of deaths at 18 really brings down the average.

Ron Paul didn't make me like this. I was libertarian prior to Paul's campaign. Secondly, that argument is a straw man. I don't think segregation is good, I think taking away property rights is bad. Your last argument assumes that affirmative action can be just so long as it doesn't account to "all [my] personal failings." Straw man. Affirmative action is government mandated discrimination that's inherently prejudicial of both minority employees and majority employers; that's why I hate it.

dabigkid - AA is debatable, my personal beliefs are that AA was appropriate in the early 70s because the minority workforce attended segregated schools, which were very poor, and in 2007 I don't believe AA is necessary anymore. Segregation is NOT debatable, it's NOT supported by either party, and the more you argue in favor of legalizing it the more you make Ron Paul look like a fool.

I hate to sound cold but the world is about survival of the fittest- the reason we have so many sick people is because we didn't have the means and drugs in the past to keep people alive. I'm all for saving lives, but is it right to prolong a person's suffering and go against nature?

I'm familiar with that argument, but to be honest, is it ethical? If you support a darwinian type culture (i.e. where the strong survive and the weak die), is that really ethical? And what if someone, like in Africa, is born into a poor, starved area and never had the chance to become strong and healthy? You have to ask yourself, is that really ethical?

I definitely understand what you're saying. I fully support helping third world countries. I think that in developed nations, especially America, we should concentrate more on preventing certain health issues (heart attacks, emphysema, osteoperosis) rather than finding solutions to something that could have easily been prevented.

I'm sorry I wasn't clear with my comment- I didn't mean to say that no one should be treated with medicine. There are so many people with unpreventable disorders and diseases that are able to live normal lives because of our advanced medical techniques, and I am extremely grateful for that. I believe it's the preventable diseases and health problems that we should crack down on.

Germs are primarily spread via close contact, and especially through food. I don't know where you heard sharing food prevented sickness, but it isn't correct. It is true that you need food more than medicine. Food helps you live and correct food will help you live longer. However medicine will help you live longer as well, which is why they are both a necessity.

Germs can make you sick but medicine can kill. Have you ever heard of Viox? Many other medicines can shorten your life as well. Perhaps you should do more research about this.

You don't have a clue what your talking about. Having a private family doctor is no where near the same as police or firemen. The millions currently go to insurance companies, and not the ones your thinking of. The insurance companies that provide the malpractice insurance to the doctors.
Most doctors cant afford to operate an office due to the steep fees they must pay because of sue-happy idiots getting millions of dollars from bogus cases.

If my doctor was contracted by the city or county in which I lived then that would be one thing, like my police officers and firemen are. I can vote for the chief of police and the fire commissioners, give me the ability to vote for who runs my local hospital and you might have a program I would be interested in hearing more about.

I think themcfann summed it up best. Socialized healthcare is a bad idea. And that's a really bad analogy. The firemen and police are socialized because, like themcfann said, they work at a community level. Oh, and I'm assuming that you have seen 'Sicko' and that movie is propaganda (definition: presenting one side and blatantly supporting it without revealing the other in support of a personal agenda). Mikey Moore probably isn't the best source for learning about a clearly flawed system.

Healthcare IS a HUGE issue for millions of Americans who die because insurance companies won't pay for care, who suffer, die, or go into bankruptcy because of healthcare bills, who have to choose between buying medicine or food, etc. Getting rid of the IRS is the least of these peoples' worries when their kids are sick!! So all of those doctors, hospitals, etc., would provide care for ANYONE for free?! That's GREAT!! I hate insurance companies & HMO's. From my experience, it's progressives that are providing free health care to those that can't afford it, not Libertarians. Do you think that if every hospital was a PRIVATE, PROFIT-DRIVEN hospital, that they would still provide care to everyone regardless of ability to pay?

Although they disagree on some issues they are the only three candidates that are honest by a long shot.
