In the introduction given in Swami Prabhupada's Bhagavad Gita As It Is, it's mentioned that when such religious occurrences are interpreted by the self, you really lose the essence of it. To understand such lilas, one must approach a guru and understand them (try to at least) by the way of parampara. :)
