  • i feel like it gets increasingly more difficult for him to count to four as the video goes on

  • @StandInVoidZones

he's not always playing in 4/4

  • @dumapies i was refering to his 1,2,3,4 before starting each segment.... he has a stroke and forgets how to close or mouth or something halfway through

  • .....drummer ain't bad either..........

  • Was the first song in this video a real song of his? Or was it just made up in the studio?

  • Again, just awsome. Larry Graham = funk.

  • 0:59 I shat myself

  • Talk about EARTHQUAKE!!

  • I love how he laughs at the end of thank you for talking to me africa. It'd make me laugh too.

  • what is that alluring oder? why i believe that's funk and i love it.

  • jimi hendrix of bass

  • @yoyoloto Jimi Played bass (on electric lady land) that said, I agree

  • its almost like he plays the drums and bass at the same time

  • @necr086 Indeed, the origins of bass slapping came from lack of drums in some moments of pieces, so Larry discovered that the thumb could imitate the bass drum, and popping the strings with forefinger could imitate snare drum :)

  • speechless ...

  • I feel like the white and gold bass is some kind of legendary item, like he had to defeat some sort of bass playing dragon to get it.

  • @mookie714 Its a Moon bass(brand)!!!

    It came from the moon!!

Thats why its so good rofl!

  • 1 minute was so fucking epic...

  • Oh yes, The God Father of Funk!

  • holy fuck at 5:47

  • The song that starts at around 4:15 is called "Hair." Sweet jam.

  • Larry Graham is a monster on the bass, but has anyone else noticed the drummer is superb too?

  • @Strakeflames That drummer is a worthy accomplice!!!

  • Is it to much asking if when I grow up can I be like this man at bass!!!?

    I mean he is badass!!!

He is a killer on bass!

I'm 17 years old, and I'm already a fan of him!

  • @TheTutomusic im 16 and i want to play bass so badly now this is purely the work of god that this man would be the bass god

  • @roxan369 ~- Yes, no doubt abaut that!

    Join to the club!

I already started on bass, but I'm far away of any of these gods, him, marcus miller, I just want to do half of they do!

  • @TheTutomusic im still waiting to get that bass

  • Does anyone know name of the song that starts around 4:15 ?

  • times when i wish i could play slap bass, i love playing bass but i can really only play rock/metal style cant seem to slap

  • @hedgeyr practice makes perfect!...theres a lesson by flea on his fleabass on the basics of slapping...try using that as an introduction =)...it really helps...LG however is on a different level...thatll only come with experience i suppose

  • the best of all base/bass players out there.

  • E ainda tem baixista que insiste em tocar com palhetas...

  • it.... ...... its like musical porn or something !

  • from when is this video? which year?

  • Definitely in my top 3. Larry, JPJ, and Marcus Miller.

  • Where the hell is my mind? This video totally blew it!

  • hearing the jam @ 1:00, it makes me think that flea is heavily influenced by larry graham

  • @TheDanification

Many famous bass players are. Flea has loads of inspirations.

Watch Larry, then Les Claypool.... same, right down to the leg tapping :D

  • god i could listen to this 24/7 and i grew up listening to metal, i guess my bass playing makes me love funk.

  • I wonder how many hours per day he still spends practicing?

  • It woulden't suprise me if he where able to kill someone with that thumb.

  • When I saw Sly & the Family Stone when they were just coming out with all this stuff I really wanted to learn everything I could about the pocket and the fire and now I just do me do!!! Thanks Funkateers!!!

  • Loved the Funk #49 cover!!!

  • I would love to drum with Graham! I'd throw some Danny Carey style in there. lol

  • Thanks Chipsonfire. I was just looking for The Jam and found your clips. Great stuff!

  • the 12year old looking asian kid is no greg e but he does have some serious chops

  • Is Larry Graham the best electric bassist of all time? Seriously, professional bassists, help me understand: is there really any other bassist that was better, ever??

  • @discipline2008 Is Larry the best bassist? That's like asking is an apple the best fruit. All good bassists are good in their own right. They all have a certain style that define their playing. There's no comparison as far as who is better. Larry Graham just happens to be the first to develop slap bass and is an influence to a lot of very good bass players today.

  • @meljr Thats a for damn sure. I have a Monster jam with some buddies planned Saturday and this has inspired me so much it's ridiculous. My friend and I already have funky jams as it is O.0.

  • @SzymonSzanczuk: Thanks for your reply. I'm a bass player, too (30+ years). I wouldn't mind hearing some of your stuff.

  • @meljr nice man. Bass is the way to go! ;) And i'd totally upload some videos of my jams if I had a good recording!

  • i didnt know larry could do double thumb

  • @ekubalusabyan He invented this style of playing in the early 60's

  • What's the first song? Please asap.

    Thanks for posting anyway!

  • @JHmusic4ever That's "If You Want Me to Stay" -Sly and the Family Stone

  • @emmettk Thank you so much my friend!:)

Larry is the KING of slap bass.

    He invented it!!!

  • I need a thumb like that...

  • Dayumn i jizzed my pants

  • Gotta admit Larry got his own style of playing the bass!!!

  • The best of the very best. Mr Graham has it all- slap, finger, pick, pop and "double stop" .

  • He looks like jesus from evan almighty. Black in all white clothes

  • 1 person thought he was abusing his bass

  • Funk attitude!!

  • Don't ever judge a man, by the length of his hair!

  • When an original sound is heard on earth, it will be sought after and repeated by multitudes.

  • What is the song at 1:52 ???? I love the baseline!

  • @Dragonshouter

sounds like Sly & the Family Stone, 'Thank you for Talkin' to me Africa''

  • @muldrez83 What about the one at 2:52 ?

  • @Dragonshouter

Sly & the Family Stone , "i want to take you higher"

  • Yeeeeess Sirrrr!! Coldest Bass lines of all time.....Larry Graham Bassist, Sly & The Fam Stone

  • Those are some long ass fingers!

    Keep it funky everybody!

  • SLAP THAT SHIT!

  • omg i can swear i heard the part at 1:00 to 1:15 somewhere!

if not the same thing, then something ALMOST the same!

    did someone steal this line?!

  • @MushroomDisorder Its just the foundation disco funk patter, its used in alot in songs like Filthy Gorgeous by Scissor sisters, water by larry graham, the end of aeroplane by the red hot chili peppers, and a billion disco songs xD

Larry graham was one of the first to popularise it tho!

    =) =) =)

  • 1 person must be scared of that thumb! :p

  • he's still playin like he was in the 70s.. not missin a lick

  • His feel is who he is. It's all natural! All you can do is mimic it. The designer!

  • I'm surprised he included 'If you want me to stay' since he didn't play bass on that one. It was Rusty Allen.

  • how hendrix sounding is earth quake 8:15 hahaha

  • URGENT!!!! what is the song at 5:45!?!?

  • @heckto35 Its called Hey Mr. Writer

  • @EDIDDY3234 Thanks!!

  • the originator of slapping mr. Larry Graham. every great bassist got some root in him. Louis, Jaco, Flea, Vic, Stanley, Mike, Bootsy. its not a bassist alive he didnt influence.

  • @thabiggavizion Jaco did not Slap and he never mentioned Graham as an influence. He was more influenced by James Jamerson. The rest? Absolutely.

  • Anyone knows if he's playing EADG or ADGC (tenor tuning)?

  • @Harbec EADG

  • this is the most bad ass thing i have ever seen

  • let me know if anyone dislikes, i will personally punch them in the dick

  • I read somewhere that Sly Stone did the bass on this record. Does anyone know if that's actually true?

  • what song is he playing starting at 0:59? it blew my mind

  • @lifegarddan "can you handle it" lol

  • Anybody know the name of the track at 4:05?

  • @TheChestnutBowl That's "Hair"

  • @OkstadOo Thanks!

  • @iWearShorts234 i don't think he was actually using a pick, and even if he was and could still make it sound so funky, i don't see any reason not to use it ;)

  • 2nd part sounds like New World Man from RUSH!!

  • The first part that he plays, muting the strings, comes from a song? if it comes from one, tell me its name please :D

  • @Lienrak 'If you want me to Stay' by Sly and the Family Stone. Larry was the bass player for that group.

  • @Lienrak : It's from 'if you want me to stay' and the song was beautifully covered by Red Hot Chili Peppers as well. That's why it sounds familiar.

  • it must suck for whoever got slapped in the face with his hand, or would that be a blessing?? hahaha

  • @Cryptbass I'm imagining him having sex now.

"Oh, play me like you play your bass Larry!"

Then he slaps her in the face, she goes

    "WTF?!"

    "Sorry instinct"

  • @Cryptbass how about getting bashed in the head with his guitar,a persson might play like him

  • with muted strings he plays better than every other bassist i've ever seen live hands down (exception for marcus miller of course)

  • He's telling a bass joke from 1:40-2:10 it's really funny!

  • that Dude on the Set! Incredible!

and look at his pyjama! :D Like he got up to jam a bit with Larry :D

  • @OifelOifel haha, pretty funny. At first glance I thought they looked like Jockey silks lol.

  • Larry just brought the proof to everyone that says "bass is useless" that you can get a very groovy song with just drum/bass/singing and that guitar is NOT the most important instrument ever... = )

  • @RoiBourin Yeah, its like the guitar player has to say, look at me! Narcissic b@stard. Look at me! Look at me!

  • RELEASE YO SELF :D:D:D hahaha damn i just love it

  • in my opinion, Larry rivolutioned bass playin more than Jaco.

  • Amazingggg

  • Exactly what kind of bass is that?

  • @jambi880 It's a Moon bass - Japanese company. Basically it's a, all-white Fender Jazz bass with gold hardware and the neck pickup slanted at an angle.

  • @jambi880 This is a great bass, a Japanese made bass, It's called a moon bass and it cost a few bucks.. I'm pretty sure the pickups are Bartolini but not sure which configuration they have.

  • "release yourself" & thats exactly what he did:D Damn that shit bounces:|

  • Always wanted to know what it would have sounded like if Larry played If You Want Me To Stay. Still adds a little pop. Nice

  • Great Larry Great¡¡¡¡¡¡

  • Don't have to be genius folks, that's what ya call soul.
