What fascinating an beautiful place. It lies on the Mid-Atlantic ridge and was created ( and still is being) by rifting of this ridge between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. I saw on a science program were a place in Iceland that you can actually stand in between these two plates. the gap was not too narrow and was like a miniature canyon because it was not maybe 2 stories deep. You could see the gap continue on into the North Atlantic ocean and continue north through Iceland

What's amazing is that people keep losing perspective. These volcanoes are the planets fertilizer. They're the reason life evolved in the first place, and they're the reason life continues to survive.

For all the problems it's causing all that ash being dumped in Europe will ultimately make the lands even more fertile and alive... er that is after it's done killing those that inhale/ingest it.
