  • Remarkable how much the Manhatten skyline looks the same as it does today in a number of places.

  • Rare footage of a unique year in shipping history, so many of these ships would be lost during WW2, and neither the Queen Mary nor the Normandie have entered service yet. It's nice to see Cunard's Grand Old Lady, Aquitania, and the soon to be retired Mauretania in her cruising white. Does anyone know the name of the first Cunarder seen in the film, the one with the single stack, I think it may be the Franconia? New York Harbor hasn't been this busy for years.

  • Nice footage

  • Awesome the Conte Di Savoia! Thought it was the Rex at first but then I saw the stern. :P

  • The beautiful Mauritania and the beautiful Aquitania at 1:18 and 1:22. They were two true Ladies of the Atlantic.

  • 1:18 I thought it was the Olympic on the left side of the screen (one of her funnels), but it was the Aquitania. :P

  • Nice video, lovely music!!!

  • Maurretania, Berengaria, Aquitania, Cunard Big Three. They were the Famous, Beautiful & Greatest Liner of their era.

  • love it!

  • The RMS Lusitania

  • I may know alot of Ocean Liners, I can Maurtania, Aquitania, Olympic & Rex. But who are the others.

  • LOL i see the olympic!

  • I take back my comment last year criticizing your choice of music track. After hearing the truly awful contemporary music that so many YouTubers choose to accompany their archival or historical videos, this song is glorious by comparison! I now approve.

  • So happy to hear it!

  • im working on a progect this gave me a boost in my grade

  • 1:41 is Italia's 'Conte di Savoia'. She was far better looking than her fleetmate 'Rex'.

  • Sorry. The frame I was looking at was at 1:38, not 1:22. Although, both show the Empire State Building in the background.

  • You can see the Empire State Building at 1:22, when the top spire wasn't place yet. Also, is that an Italian Line ship in the frame as well? It looks like the Rex.

  • OMG This a rare film :D P.S. Why is the Mauritania white?? and what ship is that at 1:42??

  • During the last years of her life, the Mauretania was used as a cruse ship. The white paint made her interiors cooler. The ship at 1:42 is either the Rex or the Conte Di Savoia of the Italian Line.

  • It's the SS Nieuw Amsterdam 2.

  • SS Amsterdam 1.

  • Oh, how fun and busy. Loved the music for this one, it made me feel the busy-body atmosphere of New York in those days. It both made me feel like I was there, and make me wish I was there.

  • 2:22 is either the Bremen or Europa.

  • That's an Anchor Line ship (owned by Cunard Line) at 1:28. It looks like the ss Transylvania of the early 1920s.

  • The 3-funnel liner at 1:28, which is that? I'd say Ile De France but its docked at one of the Cunard docks.

I'm also wondering about the liner at 2:22.

  • The 1:28 ship is one of the 3 stackers of the Anchor Line.

  • Loved the video...the music was perfect! thanks!!

  • I _love_ the video and have no problem at all with the onscreen URL, but IMHO the music track is all wrong. It's just nerve racking to have to listen to.

  • Sorry you don't like the music... for me, it captures the urgency and business of New York Harbor in the 1930s with all those ships coming and going. Glad you enjoy the video.

  • I know the one next to the Aquitania is the Calendonia,of Anchor Line

  • 5 star footage, 5 star music,

and 1 star for the URL on the footage. Cheers!

  • Aquitania, Mauretania, Conte di Savoia ... Lots of great ships.

  • A busy day indeed! Very nice footage, especially those of Mauretania and Aquitania docked. It's always good to see some four-funnel liners in these videos!

Now if only the Olympic would join the party.

  • I didnt know Maurentania was white. hmmm....also, i spy another ship w/ four funnels. according to u guys its the Aquitania. a sister ship to the Mauretania and Lusitania? and if u look closely in those same couple frames around 1:25 u can see the name of the company "Cunard White Star." The White Star Line and the Cunard Line had to merge right? I wonder if the Olympis is there. And how does everyone seem to know the two ships. obviously if Mauretanis was white then i understand. but the other?

  • The Mauretania was painted white after she was converted into a cruise ship in the end of her days. The other 4 stacker is without any doubt the Aquitania. Not really a sister to the Mauretania and Lusitania but kind of similar in the look - just 50% bigger than the older twins.

At 1:40 to 1:50 I am quite sure to have identified the Conte die Savoia of the Italian Line.

  • Leonhard -- I agree on the Conte die Savoia. The letters "ALIAN LINE" are just barely visible in the frame, this had to be the Italian Line.

  • Love the funky old auto ferry at 0:21 - 0:25 :D What are the two 4-funnel liners at 1:14?

  • The 4-funnel liners are the mauretania and aquitania

  • love it.good stuff

  • Titanic's, Olympic and Britannic's dining saloons (rooms) were located on Saloon deck D.

  • So you think you're a ship geek, ehh?

What deck(letter) were Titanic's dining saloons located on, shmarty?

Jes' ribbin ya, pal. I've got a collection of ocean liner books that'll make you salivate! Three of them: "Fifty Famous Liners" 1 thru 3, would keep you busy for weeks! Along with "Story of the Titanic as told by her survivors" - with testimony fresh to within a year of the disaster.

I'd bring these things to highschool and read them during gym! I was obsessed!

  • D deck

name the 14 four stackers, how many were sunk, what co. built them, and what year they were built

  • I also see a twin-funneled Grace liner and at the end the huge Bremen or Europa of North German Lloyd.

  • Oh this was sweet!.I build models of some of these for my model railroad. Thanks

  • It was a great time in the history. Beautiful cars, grand ocean liners, fascinating clothes and perfect music.

  • Actually it is the RMS Mauretania, but it isn't the Britannic

  • ahhh....thanks for telling ^^

  • Holy lord at 1:15- 1:30 or so, you can see the Olympic and the Britannic, the White Stars' prides! :D Both birthed at there docks! Love those boats...

  • Sry, my mistake, one is the olympic, the other i dont know, This si after Britannic sank so it cant be there >.> i dont think at least

  • its mauretania and aquitania not olympic and britannic

  • Correct! The white painted liner is the legendary Mauretania and the ship left of it is the sister ship Aquitania.

  • the ship with 2 white funnels is the italian liner rex

im not sure about any others

  • The Britannic Sank in 1916, so that wasn't the Britannic it was the Aquitania

  • I love the Mauretania! She was so pretty, and so elegant!!! do you have more old vids whith the Mauretania

  • wasn't that rex at 1:38?

    anyway great vid!

  • meleemain13, yeah I think it is.

It may also be Conte di Savoia. Both ships only 2 years old at the time of this video.

  • Given its stern, it was Conte di Savoia.Just before we can also see the french Champlain.

  • From that view, Champlain almost looks like an earlier, (somewhat more crude) version of the Andrea Doria Class.

Mauretania also looks nice in her crusing livery.

  • mauritania and aquitania? awesome!!!
