best scene in the movie is when Mercedes confronts Edmond at his house. Mercedes stands up. "Why did you not come to me?" He yells, "Why did you not wait? You married the very man who betrayed-" Mercedes holds up her hand, where the string still is on her finger. "God is giving us a new beginning, don't slap His hand away." "God? Can I never escape Him?" "No. He is in everything. Even in a kiss." Then, the music swells as they kiss. Very well-filmed scene.
This chick is a huge slut that is just desperate in getting laid. Edmund shouldnt have even taken her back. She just married that other guy as soon as she thought Edmund was dead. If thats not a slut I dont know what is.
@ivmatta2001 While I feel I should point out that she had to try and give her son the best life she could, and to marry fast was the only way to do it.... I still totally agree, huge slut.
Excellent movie and extremely well played by JC. It reminds me of the movie Stage Secret with Billy Crudup. They both played two parts and made them appear easy. Both very underrated actors.
I guess one thing us Americans will never get is the commoner vs noble thing. While we certainly have classes...at least you can move thru them in this nation.

@RLlover456 The soundtrack, by Edward Shearmur, is on youtube. I don't know the name of the piece specifically but if you search on youtube, you're sure to find it. :)
It interesting how the three guys are somehow related to the Nolans. Guy Pearce was in Memento written by Jonah Nolan directed by Chris Nolan, Jim Caviezel is the lead man in Person of Interest created & produced by Jonathan Nolan, and Henry Cavill is the Man of Steel which is produced by Chris Nolan.
"Well, I rotted in prison for 13 years for something I didn't do, eating rats and drinking rainwater, never knowing if I would ever see daylight again. So... yeah."
you really have to read the book to understand the true human qualities, conflicts between human natures and real justice. The movie is not bad but missing a lot of stuff from the book.
Oh, and what about valentine and max? In the book they are the whole point of the story- 'wait and hope'! The count is a tormented soul that wants revenge and finds possible love in Haidee, whilst helping a young couple find love that he never was able to have!
@MissTinky1985 The book is a great work that has been a legend in literature. Not one movie that has been made from it can measure up. So, the writers put their own take on it to please the screen. This movie has an entirely different plot than the book, so you really can't compare the book to this.
It was strange to see the exclusion of Maximilien and Valentine (and Haydée) considering how important they were to Edmond. Instead the movie chose to follow the typical cliched story of lovers departed and reunited - even though this is completely at odds with what occurs in the book, as Mercedes is left completely alone and wretched in the end as Edmond finally opens himself to the possibility of happiness and love with Haydée.
Its so different from the book that its not even the same story any more! Mercedes doesn't recognise him in the book and Albert is fernands boy. Also the way he takes revenge is different and his servant is a mute not a ghetto pirate! Plus, where is Haidee? One of my favorite characters in the book?! Very disappointing...
This passage is from The incredible marquis by Herbert Gorman entitled the soldier of fortune(chapter six) It was natural that Dumas believed implicitly in the magic of somnambulism, in animal magnetism and in chiromancy. No Haitian negro dancing before his Voodoo altar was more superstitious than Dumas. Home, to Dumas, therefore, was an authentically inspired adept in communicating with unseen world.
@BayouBluesMan "Behind the ostensible government sits enthroned an INVISIBLE GOVERNMENT owing NO allegiance and acknowledging NO responsibility to the people. To destroy this invisible government, to befoul this unholy alliance between corrupt business and corrupt politics is the first task of the statesmanship of today." PRESIDENT THEODORE ROOSEVELT, 1906
@BayouBluesMan "The minority, the ruling class at present, has the schools and press, usually the Church as well, under its thumb. This enables it to organize and sway the emotions of the masses, and make its tool of them."
~ Albert Einstein, letter to Sigmund Freud, 30 July 1932
@BayouBluesMan Have we succeeded? We think so. Before long we shall have covered with our narratives an enormous period of time; between the "Comtesse de Salisbury' and the "Comte de Monte Christo" five centuries and a half are compresed. Well, we assert that we have taught France as much history about those five centuries and a half as any historian. This passage is from The Companions of Jehu which was written by Alexandre Dumas pere.
In the book Mercedes was not PREGNANT with Edmond's child!!! Albert was Mondegos son not Edmonds. Someone should read the book instead of watching movie. Book is a lot more interesting than the movie, because movie misses a lot of books characters...like greek girl Haide, or the part where Albert was on Monte Cristo island...
Michael Tsarion is the worlds premier conspiracy researcher/lecturer/author. Dr. Bill Deagle, Leo Zagami, Jordan Maxwell and Alexandre Dumas pere are highly informative as well. p.s. Melting Euphoria is similar to Ozric Tentacles and Gong.
"Let's call it vengeance, for the life you stole from me"
I've been thinking about this quote.....I know what Mondego did was jacked up, but on the real, was Edmund better off before or after the Chateau D'If? Before he was arrested, he didn't know how to read or write, he was gullible and pathologically naive, he didn't know how to fight or defend himself, he wasn't insanely rich and he wasn't the master of an empire. All he had going for him was a boat......thoughts?
@knight7se7en Make excellent points and in some sense I agree. But when it comes right down to it,when your betrayed by someone who you thought was your friend,it still cuts deep.
@knight7se7en I understand where you're coming from and you're right on all counts. It comes down to personaly opinion. Edmond lost 13 years in prison and no amount of money can replace time once its been lost. He missed watching his son grow up and he missed the life he would have lived with Mercedes. Overall though he wouldn't have been rich the man he was at the beginning didn't care about it one way or the other. He was innocent in a way you don't see nowadays. A ship and his love was fine.
@knight7se7en You're right for sure, but I don't think I'd like to spend 13 years in any prison for the exchange of countless millions of dollars. Although, if I was alone in the prison, or had a good cell mate and didn't get cornholed and beaten up, and had tv and books, that would be a different story. It's a great movie and book
@123mazeppa 'I do not like the reappearance of The Jesuits ... If ever there was a body of men who merited damnation on earth and in hell, it is this society of Loyola's. Nevertheless, we are compelled by our system of religous toleration to offer them an asylum.' John Adams, 2nd President of the U.S.A
Aww man...I never knew they had a book. Shoot I hate watching a movie without having read the book cause then I think the book is all wrong. But reading the comments looks like the book is way better than the movie.
@JuJuMJFan4life *Sigh* To all those who think that Mercedes betrays Edmond IN THE FILM: Watch part 4! Yet again, her defense: 1. She didn't know that Mondego set Edmond up. 2. She was pregnant with Edmond's child and had to marry someone quickly, or face a hellish life as an unmarried mother (see Fantine in Les Misérables) 3. She thought Edmond had died. For better or worse, the film is not identical to the book. Honestly people, please note the differences before you judge FilmMercedes.
@jezmuff If Mercedes was a "slut" then why didn't she sleep with Mondego when he kept asking her in part 1? She didn't want him. But, as I said below, after Edmond was arrested she had no real choice. She was pregnant with Edmond's child and she thought he'd been executed. Life was hell for unmarried mothers in those days. Again, look at Fantine's horrible life in Les Misérables for a glimpse of the alternative. If she hadn't married Mondego she would likely have died before Edmond returned.
I still don't get it...why Mercedes married the man who set Edmond up? and how can Edmond accept this by only seeing the ring but not 16 years of marriage with the one who made him so miserable?
I think what people fail to realize is that Fernand would have killed Mercedes or something more fucked up if he realized that Albert was Edmond's son.
@Lordbillgates Of course she didn't go thru what Edmond did but she didn't betray Edmond either because Villefort told her that Edmond DIED. Also she was pregnant with Edmonds child, was told he had died and was forced to marry Mondago quickly because you didn't dare get pregnant in those days without being married.
F Mercedes, tells him to "give up his hate". For 13 years he suffered in hell while she lived a lavished life style. O, she feels sorry for him now after she realizes his rich and what life they could have now, wow talk about bs!
@LordBillGates She suffered too. She lived a life of loneliness forced to marry a man she didn't love who was constantly cheating on her and added to that the guilt she must have felt of betraying Edmund. By contrast Edmunds time in prison MADE him and he had the company and teachings of a truly great man.
@F4NT4FRU1TTW15T I highly disagree with you. For god sake the man was whipped, had to eat rats, hide in a hole, and stuck in a brick room the whole time. Wow, Mercedes had a little mental issues. No one forced her to marry him or stay with him. However, Edmund was forced into his suffering where he went through way more physical and mental torture then she did. Then and the end, she tells him to give up his hate, what does she know about his hate, she didn't go through what he did?
@samer820 Watch part 4. Mercedes didn't know that Mondego betrayed Edmond. Plus, like 777toogie1 said, Mercedes thought Edmond had died, and she was pregnant with his child. She had to marry someone fast, before it showed. Just look at Les Misérables, which is set in the same time period and country (Second Republic France). Fantine goes through hell for getting pregnant outside of marriage, and her child suffers too. Who can blame Mercedes for trying to avoid that fate?
@MsCymry I see. But, none of these was mentioned during the argument between Edmond and Mercedes, which doesn't make much sense. When Edmond asked her "Why did you not wait?", Mercedes didn't explain any of these but just showed him her ring still on her finger, which doesn't seem enough to convince Edmond that she didn't have a choice. Therefore, in the movie, Edmond's reaction looks not much with sense to me for being a normal person.
@samer820 You've got a point there. I've often thought that she should have told Edmond about Aubert being his son, in that scene. In part 10, she did explain that Villefort said he'd been executed. When Edmond later confronts Villefort in the sauna, he clearly believes that Villefort lied to Mercedes. I guess the explanation that she thought he'd died, together with the "ring," was enough to convince him that she had never stopped loving him.

What difference does it make whether she kept the string on her finger? She still started fucking Mondego after a month. Opportunistic slut.

@MsCymry It wasn't Edward's child, though. Atleast not in the book. It was still Fernand's.

I still don't get it...why Mercedes married the man who set Edmond up? and how can Edmond accept this by only seeing the ring but not 16 years of marriage with the one who made him so miserable?
samer820 9 months ago
I think what people fail to realize is that Fernand would have killed Mercedes or something more fucked up if he realized that Albert was Edmond's son.
alizaie16 10 months ago 3
@Lordbillgates Of course she didn't go thru what Edmond did but she didn't betray Edmond either because Villefort told her that Edmond DIED. Also she was pregnant with Edmonds child, was told he had died and was forced to marry Mondago quickly because you didn't dare get pregnant in those days without being married.

F Mercedes, tells him to "give up his hate". For 13 years he suffered in hell while she lived a lavished life style. O, she feels sorry for him now after she realizes his rich and what life they could have now, wow talk about bs!
LordBillGates 10 months ago
@LordBillGates She suffered too. She lived a life of loneliness forced to marry a man she didn't love who was constantly cheating on her and added to that the guilt she must have felt of betraying Edmund. By contrast Edmunds time in prison MADE him and he had the company and teachings of a truly great man.
F4NT4FRU1TTW15T 10 months ago
@F4NT4FRU1TTW15T I highly disagree with you. For god sake the man was whipped, had to eat rats, hide in a hole, and stuck in a brick room the whole time. Wow, Mercedes had a little mental issues. No one forced her to marry him or stay with him. However, Edmund was forced into his suffering where he went through way more physical and mental torture then she did. Then and the end, she tells him to give up his hate, what does she know about his hate, she didn't go through what he did?
LordBillGates 10 months ago
@F4NT4FRU1TTW15T no body forced her. She chose to marry that man. This is insanely absurd and stupid....this doesn't make any sense to me.
samer820 9 months ago

Therefore, in the movie, Edmond's reaction looks not much with sense to me for being a normal person.
samer820 9 months ago
@samer820 You've got a point there. I've often thought that she should have told Edmond about Aubert being his son, in that scene. In part 10, she did explain that Villefort said he'd been executed. When Edmond later confronts Villefort in the sauna, he clearly believes that Villefort lied to Mercedes. I guess the explanation that she thought he'd died, together with the "ring," was enough to convince him that she had never stopped loving him.
MsCymry 9 months ago 2
@MsCymry True. Futhuermore, it would be too soon for Mercedes to 'explain' about Albert being Edmund's son. That's why she told Fernard first.
