All I am saying it's hard for me to take these scenarios in music seriously. The fact that groups cover others songs has never been unusual. It's sad the Supremes & Motown felt a need to open up music markets by putting on 'faces', as I woud call it. I actually love their little 'surf' and 'liverpool' songs...but it's too damn phoney for me. You had to grow up in the 60s when these songs were done to understand. The Supremes were fortunate they could vote back then.

I have mixed feelings about this music. The Supremes did Motown. But Barry Gordy wanted to get them more into the white mainstream...hence them doing "surf" music in all white youth settings.. or doing this Liverpool style stuff. Kind of strange. However, they were that good that they could do covers out of their 'zone' and still sound good. But the manipulation and compromise of Gordy and the racial situation of the 60s are evident in these videos.

I think the album was also done to help promote The Supremes in the UK - and since the English bands were always covering songs by black American artists it was a nice change for it to be done the other way around =)

i remember hearing this when i was around 10 its amazing how dianes voice stood out to me even then although i heard all three voices especially the loud soprano in the back who is Sangin her ass off. but it was the leads high pitched nazel voice that cut through the music like a knife backed with some serious soprano and alto that got me it was a sound i had never heard before or since. different from any female . i fell in love with the lead voice and her big Eyes.
