When are you people going to start going a bit under the surface of what its really about: MUSIC! Buddy Rich was first and foremost the most naturally gifted and sensitive MUSICIAN. he was a musical institution, innovator and yes, he also was the greatest drummer who ever lived who used this ability as a drummer to get the music out to audiences all over the world for 6 decades! WAKE UP!!!
i generally dont believe people are born to do something, i think people can do what they put their mind too, but buddy has to have been born to drum. no one who didnt practice or have lessons could do this unless they were born too. the holy grail
first of all,if youask a question of anyone, youll only get his or her opinion on the level of information they have on that subject. Buddy Rich was the greatest drummer of all time, with incredible speed, and dexterity. Is there someone as good somewhere? maybe. But they did not follow suit and follow their dream of playing drums professionally. As far as the comparison to Travis barker, I saw Budy up close live many times. That single stroke roll, he would make you want to cry. he was a machine!
@running3492 I agree. The problem with today's drummers is that they only relate to the "famous" drummers of this era; and all of them are pale comparisons to Buddy. I've been involved with drums for many decades and I can tell you that I missed the boat too. Ididn't recognize how truly incredible he was until I was 27. Had YouTube existed when I was 4 or 5 back in the 50's where I could have seen these and other videos it would have changed my life.
These younger, lamer drummers: Tommy Lee, Travis Barker, Benny Greb, etc., don't have 1/100 of the licks that Buddy had. When they solo they have to resort to playing "grooves" to fill up the time. I watched a great old school drummer playing in a Guitar Center Drum Off. He was technically the best there and should have won his local contest; he got passed over by the young judges that criticized him for not doing Travis Barker grooves. GCDO, like Idol, is a popularity contest at the local level
if you believe if you believe that the Jewish people were God's chosen people Bernard Rich was a perfect example of a gift from God through his hands no one can play like that and no one ever will even Buddy Rich new his talent was a gift from God and he wasn't religious what's that tell you smile
Buddy is from another planet! His ability here can and will never be matched, by anyone. I have loved Buddy ever since I was a little drummer wanna be back in the late 60's! I had the privilege to see him live and I was totally blown away. Thanks Buddy for setting the bar so high.
@liveloud4life What I'm saying is, I never see Metallica fans trolling Rush videos, or any other major drummer battles. It seems to me that Travis Barker fans have a vendetta specifically set against Buddy rich.
@darkalleyheroes A person can't evaluate something they don't know (never having heard buddy play). They can't evaluate, correctly, something they can't understand or relate to. Buddy's playing level is so far ahead of Travis Barker that its like comparing the complexity of the Wright Brothers Air Plane to the Space Shuttle. Some of these young fans and drummers simply can't grasp or comprehend just how difficult it is to play what Buddy played and made look so easy to do.
WAKE UP!!!
Why is it only Buddy Rich and Travis Barker who get compared? Of all the drummers, why those random two? I never hear any Neil Peart vs. Lars Ulrich vs. Bill Bruford debates. It's always those two.
@darkalleyheroes Well for one Lars Ulrich is total shit, esp when compared to neil peart. And it's because among knowledgable people Buddy Rich is widely considered the greatest drummer there's ever been. And among really stupid people Travis Barker is the only drummer that ever lived.
@Travisbarker4prez id like to see you try to attempt this kid.. do us all a favor and go back to your blink 182 "tribute" band and leave the real talent alone..
Pay no mind to the trolls. They speak in ignorance and forget that this shit was done and mastered years before any of the contemporaries (who STILL give mad props to Buddy for being the best ever).
Learn your place, son. All your so-called "Legends" have. ;)
just the singles part alone, at the end, should tell you that he's a legend at what he does. How dare you critique one of the greatest solo drumset performers of all time. You sir have so much to learn about musicality and pure technique. Amen
hes just fucking rolling on the snair and his kit sounds like shit how can you compare thse guys from the 50s to guys like travis barker can punk this guy out on the fucking drum set dipshit
@TBARKERISLEDGEND Do you even play drums? Do you know anything about them?? This is so much more complicated than Barkers rudimentary beats. He couldnt even pull half of this off at 120 tempo. Barker is way overrated by fanboys like you.
@CJNconor it seems your the retarted jackass if you think this is fucking hard hes doing the same fucking snaire patterns overa nd over paradidel and his fucking left foot opens the hat 1nce in a fucking while he has not independence and his feet are shit so your the retard got it dumbass
@TBARKERISLEDGEND If you dont think this amazing, check out his other videos, he has total coordination in his left foot, all Jazz Drummers do. Not trying to pick a fight or anything, just my personal opinion.
@TBARKERISLEDGEND you obviously havent touched a drum set in your life if you think travis barker plays harder stuff than this. and his kit doesnt sound like shit just because its not heavily muffled and edited. and buddy's solos are repetitive? then what are travis barkers?
Might be the best solo ever filmed by Buddy. I wish the camera was on him the whole time. I love watching his left hand and right foot. When you see him play the drums in person and up close... it takes your breath away. His power, speed and ability to do anything is even more amazing in person. Thanks for posting this.
@1buddyrichfan My favorite Buddy solo is the one from West Side Story live on king street. It shows amazing dynamics, and very musical compared to a lot of his solos.
@1buddyrichfan I really should read what I write sometime. What my comment really ment was that I'm never satsified with the camera work. I wish the camera was on his hands (especially the left) and right foot more. It's just me I'm sure but....the camera work just never seems to catch some of the detail of his amazing technique. When I saw him live a few times I was just spellbound and still am today but I wish the fans who did not get the chance to see him live could. Makes sense dj13 ??
Kudos to the rest of the band with the wind instruments, for knowing when to fall back and
when to crash back in, at the beginning and end
of the drum solo respectively. Plus my neck would've hurt after looking over my right shoulder for 9 minutes. LOL Buddy Rich is god pretending to be Buddy Rich.
Travis Barker? Come on. Compared with Buddy rich he wouldn't know what a drippypiddle was. Buddy was the greatest drummer of all time, and no-one will ever replace him. That's a dead cert.
Around 5:18 he reaches up and touch his nose without pausing!
It must take a lot of suppleness and control in the wrists to play so quietly in the lead up to the finale when he has already been going like blazes for 7 minutes.
