@sctr579 - There was never an "edited version", the scene looks exactly the same in all VHS and DVD releases, and the video you refer to is a fake...look closely, and you'll see the bird's wing tip poking out from under the "suicide". Nor was Oz the first (three-strip) color film...that honor belongs to 1935's Becky Sharp, and MGM had plenty of money for retakes, considering they were one of the biggest studios at the time and this was no low-budget film.

Sorry to break the bad news to all of you, but it's an Ostrich they were originally going to use in this scene, but removed it because it was out of place. Little did L.B. Mayer or the director know that it had gotten loose backstage wasn't noticed in the film until editing. They left it in because there was so much trouble trying to get this scene filmed to begin with.

It was a really far object but for it to be that big on screan then it would have had to be as big as a human or bigger. Guys that was a hanging. They edited it to look like a bird. In fact if it really was a bird it would have to be huge. I,m talking like 7-8 tall. With a wingspan even bigger. It was a really far object but for it to be that big on screan then it would have had to be as big as a human or bigger. Do you think that the cops wanted to tell the parents of the kids who watched the movie that somebody died on set? Thats bad sales and probably would have been stopped. I'm just voiceing my openion.

do some research. This was before the munchin scene and there was no munchkins on the set yet, If someone hung themself, there would have been a police report filed. Which there isnt. And if you really do some digging you'll find out the whole munchkin rumor started spreading around 50 YEARS after the movie was made. Pretty good sales pitch for their 50th edition

This was discovered DECADES after the G rating was given... And besides this ratings relate only to what is intentionally put in the film, if a little munchkin really killed itself back there, it would still have a G rating because no person would have noticed this without being told, and it in no way relates to the story line...
