Fleming astounds me... she manages to sing some of the best versions of my favorite and the worse...
She is utterly lovely as a woman, and I think all recent comments have done a lot of good for the new recording... she has an amazing facility and is superb live....
I work at the ROH and she was singing Violetta last season... flawless every night
As nice as the interpolated trill was at the end of the Ah Forse Lui, what did it really add? Nothing. And what would it have hurt her to sing it as written? Nothing.
These are the choices I am talking about with Fleming. I disagree with her artistic choices, and think they do nothing but lable her as a Maveric.. And as to her voice, which is lovely from top to bottom, she is a soubrette. not a lyric. The pauses before the second set of Goire... show.. what vocal issues she is having.
@kgarmaker123 I will never understand those of you that constantly feel the need to criticize and quite frankly, hate Renee Fleming. Clearly this woman has talent and throughout the years has acquired some expertise as a soprano. I think she is entitled to a little more respect, and much less petty criticism.
Maybe is is your age, that you could take my comment as "hate" . If you carefully reread my comment, you will see that I do not hate Ms Fleming, as a matter of fact, think she has a lovely voice.
Excuse me? My age has no relevance in this conversation. Every so often, I hear people like you bring up petty details about Fleming's voice. Do not try to justify your comments after they have been said. What would it have hurt you to shut up and listen to her sing without providing the rest of youtube with your ignorant commentary? Nothing.
Insolent idiot indeed.. You cannot answer my speciic criticisms because unlike me you KNOW nothing.. Now my attempt to be civil is over. Sit down and shut your pie hole up.
Isn't it obvious how I feel with regards to your petty criticism? You don't have the taste to appreciate Fleming's artistic choices and for some reason feel the need to let everyone know. I am sure you are very knowledgeable, I certainly don't doubt that. All I am asking is that you show a little more respect to a woman that has contributed so much to the modern world of opera.
@kgarmaker123 - You think she is a soubrette? Although she tends to overdarken her sound, falsely leading people to believe she has a bigger voice than she actually does, I do would not think of her as a soubrette. That term in particular refers more to a specific character than to a specific voice type. These characters tend to be servants, chambermaids, manipulators, etc. I do not see/hear her as any of these.
Yes.. I think of a soubrette as a particular voice type and some very singers agree with me, but its ok.. I get your point very well.. I have always felt that Fleming was a mid sized to small sized soprano voice.. Frankly, I wish she would just behave. Thats all.vocally that is.
@kgarmaker123 ...I agree with you in terms of her musical choices, but then again they might not all be coming from her. Her most influential voice teacher, Beverly Johnson, disagreed with her choices (i.e. scooping). A great deal of interpretation often comes from coaches, etc. Anyhoo, I still enjoy her voice, but I could do without the glottals, scoops, and breathy sounds after phrases.
@kgarmaker123 I don't wish to start an argument with you...but sir or madam if you take such offense to fleming's singing why bother to view her videos and write so many unflattering comments? I'm curious as to whether or not you are a singer, if so where might we catch your next performance.
@yesblanche reread my comments and tell me i have been unflattering to Ms. Fleming's inate talent. And Your response regarding my performances is a very weak response.. It is stupid.YOu do not have to be a world class singer to know one.
@kgarmaker123 well you definitely responded with the vitriol I expected. I just find it odd that the nastiest comments, posted on youtube, regarding these immensely fine singers are generally rendered by non-professionals. You are indeed entitled to your opinion, but do try to be civil with other posters and maintain at leat a modicum of respect for the discipline, hard work, and focus that goes into these performances (even the ones you disapprove of).
I like Rénée's performance in Traviata with Villazon(It's in youtube too) Specially when she sings "amami Alfredo" It's great, she sings without stop until she says the second time "quanto t'amo" (when it's quite often that soprano stops before say "Alfredo")

for me it's just too much vibrato.
You all may want to kill me, but in the coloratura i don't even hear different notes, it's just vibrato.

Not that great, I prefer Mariella Devia.

I don;t I prefer Fleming. She is engaged with the role. Devia might as well be singing a recipe.
