@antmeup - Try the college method (not public services route) you will have better chances either completing a BTEC diploma in Health & Social Care then onto the university course Ambulance Technician. Ofcourse it is very difficult to get onto the ambulance service. youre best option is to aim high (Distinctions in your college coursework) and keep up the St John Ambulance. @antmeup the best thing you can do is join st johns or the red cross for experience which is as important as the qualifications you will get. @DEADCOPSMAKEMEHAPPY oops, did i say that or think that? anyone who doesnt acknowledge the truth in that statement lives in some happy, safe, fantasy world. tell me im wrong!
miserable bitch? haha.. you wouldnt say that to me in real life.
my only point is that the police are important to paramedics for violent scenes. just because you wear pants low and buy stuff with food stamps, doesnt mean you cant respect a cop's job, thug.
@bmahy1 You have to first get what's called the EMT-B certification then you can move on to paramedic school. The courses are accelerated so they are generally only 16 for the EMT-B and anywhere from 6 months to two years for the paramedic course. Lemme tell you though I've done 18 credits at a university and this class was harder then that.
Excellent video, couldntve done it better myself, it really gives a glimpse of what the life of a paramedic is like the good as well as the bad side of it
oh london paramedic, its so hard in a country were everyone is so well behaved that cops dont even carry guns! try be a paramedic in milwaukee wisconsin...ive been personally attacked by people, drunks, people who are high, people who just dont like us for some reason step in and try to hurt us while we do our jobs...oh it must be sooo hard in london....
@RacersMoment yea, and thats why NHS staff are contasntly abused? prick. its the same all over, regardless of gun law. cities are cities, they all have the same problem, a paramedic is going to get abused whether its london, new york or syndey. not even just paramedics, police and fire, all services, doctors, nurses, just people in the street. i'm just a mcdonalds worker and ive been attacked by drunks, druggies and everything else so GET FUCKED
@RacersMoment wow, you ignorant knucklehead.. just because people her dont go around toting guns doesnt mean that they are automatically nice to the emergency services, you wouldnt last an hour in central london after dark. all crews get attacked all over the world, we're on the same team, stop being a dick.
@JulietSierraUK oh ur totally right, after dark in central london is soooo scary...work the graveyard shift in milwaukee....WAY worse than you can imagine...
@RacersMoment im not really sure why are trying to get a kick out this. This job isnt about being recognised for working in a rough area, more about the actual treatment and care you give. There will always be somewhere worse, but dont get on your high horse that you've seen the worst as if that makes you a better medic, because it clearly doesnt.
@RacersMoment hmmm... disrespecrting fellow paramedics??? You either have'nt been in this very long or your not in it at all, we all deal with the same shit whether you live in a little town or city, its just how often the situation arrises, Dade County miami medics may say the same about YOU, they have to wear bullet proof vests and are State Recognized i they've made more than 5 yrs w/o leaving or being killed, get over yourself man, we all save lives and are hated or under appreciated!!!!!!!!
@RacersMoment It is really stupid and ignorant to be comparing EMS or shitting on someone else, I am a Paramedic in Canada and take pride in knowing that I won't be responding to shootings on a regular basis because laws allow a bunch of idiots to carry firearms. Congrats Milwaukee for being more "dangerous".
And Lukkuu I know your post was over 2 months a go but did you manage to get enough detail for your project? Anyone with any questions I'm happy to help.
There's always only one person on the FRV (Fast Response Vehicle). i'm currently training as a paramedic through the university route and this is the standard. Their role is to be sent before an ambulance (mostly about government targets) and we intervene on category A calls so calls that are deemed life threatening. I must say this video really does capture the highs and lows of our job! And you really never know what your shift will entail! Good work =)
(Part two).... Although I don't live with my dad I know he works extremely hard and I'm very proud of him. I also think that they should have higher wages in inner city environments due to the volume of calls they recieve, the nature of some calls/jobs attend to, the responsibility they carry and the personal risks they encounter on a day to day basis.
My dads a Paramedic in the LAS, he's been doing it for over 12 years now. Back when he started you didn't have to go to university to become a fully qualified medic. To be honest, I think it's contraictory to todays legislations. If they were competent to pass exams back then(and I think you have to get something like 96% of all questions correct), then the same rules and regulations should still be valid today.... (part two above).
Thanks for the video. My aspiration is to be a paramed.. enrolling with St John to do volunteer ambo work/event work while I study a nursing/para degree. Kudos to anybody who does this, paid or unpaid. You guys are awesome.
Cool video, unfortunately typical of the jobs we get nowadays (Stabbings/ shootings). I've been an EMT with London Ambulance Service for 4+ years and I'm currently doing my paramedic course (2 weeks left!). It's pretty hard going & very intense at times but it'll definately be worth it! The LAS are no longer recruiting EMT's and the only way in to frontline A&E is to do the student paramedic or degree courses. Good luck to anyone who wants to give it a go, It's definately the best job ever!!
startin paramedic science at st.georges london in sept, was readin comments about people lookin info bout gettin on 2 paramedic courses, my advice is join st john ambulance and get up ambulance aid 2 level (ETA) C1 driving license is important as well, and most importantly dnt give up cos u will get der 1 day!
I am considering becoming a paramedic in london, rather like this man in the video, is the course hard, how much does it cost, and would you recommend it ?
sorry for all the questions just hard to find a faq forum.
@Prittlelincess I want to become a paremedic but how do you deal with seeing people die alot did you get use to it after a while? How did you cope with it?
Thank you for your comment. I am afraid I won't be able to help you as I am only the filmmaker here. The wonderful man Tony who I worked with for the above video, however, told me that he did need to build up some sort of a distance to major incidents. The NHS also offers psycological support to staff to help them cope better. Nevertheless, it can be hard at times not to let it get to you - and this is what makes us human, I guess. Good luck.
@Prittlelincess I can tell you, being a medic myself, your head is in a different state of mind on a majority of the emergencies you do respond to. Ofcourse certain calls do effect you but make sure you do talk about them with others and they will not give the same effect.
For example, respond to a car accident you are worried about the equipment and what you will need to help this person, not so much their situation, only their condition and needs.
@ikeashiasanders29 Eventually you will learn to deal with it. You'll build up almost a tolerance to it. There's certain things like kids you won't ever be able to fully let go but wherever you end up working has counseling and things on hand so that you won't burn out.
@ikeashiasanders29I may only be St John Ambulance but i've seen a lot on our ambulances. My worst was when i was off duty. A car had hit a lorry and a tree which hit the driver and killed him. I had to work on the passenger whilst their friend was dead next to them. I had to accept that death is part of life. I talked to crew members and cousellors about it because I had to get over it. If i dwell on the past then i can't concentrate on the current casualty and that puts their life at risk .
I'm a Medical Orderly in Singapore, been serving with the ambulance here with the SCDF for nearly two years already. First time I've had a call like that was pretty scary, but it wasn't so much as seeing the person in front of you pass away, it's more of the people that they leave behind. I remember we had a fire fighter trainee follow us for a night and we had a cardiac arrest case and he couldn't sleep for the rest of the night because he saw the wife crying.
@ikeashiasanders29 Im a paramedic. the job "de-sensitizes" someone. ive had calls that i dont share with anyone, but a co worker, because i dont want them to know how jaded i've become and dont want them to think ive become apathetic towards human life- but its a "coping" skill that comes with the job.
in my city, 80-90% of the calls are for people who dont need ambulances.
to answer your question, if you become a paramedic, you cant internalize the calls you get. Just do your job.
A lot of rules about non-EMTs is based entirely on the individual town or city... And different states have different guidlines, so don't hold me to it that you're definately going to be able to do anything like that...
one more year for me to be one. So stoked, its smart to be an emt for about a year even though you could go to paramedic school right away, its 40 times easier if your an emt first. Just the other day, i saw this dude with a ice pick in his neck, it was a sight to see.
ride alongs are allowed dependant on the service protocols of who you want to ride with, you would have to contact the service administration office to be considered, i know here you have to have a minimum certificate and training level to be able to go on one but they are a lot of fun and really helpgul to find out if this is what you really should be doing, there are plenty of other job opportunities for paramedics including safety consultants and paramedic instructors.
Your ability to be able to implement and undertake clinical intervention is your coping mechanism for a stressful situation. You have the knowledge, skills and attitude to help someone in crisis. After the case, you will have time to reflect on your clinical management of the patient and build on the positives and negatives that flow from that. After 30 years as a career paramedic, I still don't find the job 'stressful'. Good luck for the future, you will make a fine paramedic.
ride alongs are allowed in some areas, but not others... Depending on your age, you may be able to join a group created specifically for young people to be able to ride along before they become an EMT... I'm about a month away from getting my EMTB and part of a group provided by my local ambulance company called the explorers.. I've been for a while, starting when I was 14... It's helped a lot... And if you're not comfortable, you can stop anytime... But if you're like me, you'll become addicted
It's videos like these that recruit the wrong people into paramedicine. Yes, we do attend to calls for stabbings and other serious injuries/medical conditions, but you do a lot more calls for minor problems that have a flavour of social work to them. I love what I do, but if people expect to become a paramedic just so they can do stabbing calls all day, they are in for a big surprise. :-)
10 days ago i had a call for constipation for a recent post pardum mother who was taking percocet for pain. total bullshit, right?
that same day i had a full arrest, and we restored a pulse, and a gswx6, who was in shock, that died in the icu, but we were amazing on scene and had less than 10 minute from pt contact to the er.
thats what i love about my job, you never know what you get next.
Yes you do have to be good at math. Imagine (for those that don't know) that you have 40mg of a drug in 100ml of fluid and you have to give 5mg of that drug. How many ml are you going to draw up? Now imagine that your adrenaline is pumping, a patient's life is DIRECTLY in your hands and your answer to the question could be whether he lives or dies. Stressful, huh? :) Great video!
Because due to simple diffusion and osmosis, you can not simply introduce a 100% solute concentration to a patient's blood vessel. Well, you could, but you would do much more harm than good.
Due to simply diffusion, osmosis, and other extremely biological functions, you cannot simply introduce a 100% solute concentration to a patients vascular system. The meds would not enter the patients body. Most meds must be diluted, HEAVILY diluted in saline/bi-carb.
Paramedics also don't need to be underestimated. People still need to have at least a high school education of math to do about any job well. If fractions or any type of applied math scares away people from achieving a job, I think they should go back to high school.
paramedics deserve better pay, just look at what they have to do, the long hours, and having to deal with everything psychologically. I want to be a paramedic, and at the moment only 51% of ambulance crew are fully trained paramedics. People should do the job because they really want to, but their might be a shortage because its paid so badly..compared to footballers, who we are helping! x
Nice vid bro, well done. I'm a medic in Canada, we've got a vid on here too, search for "on the scene". it shows all the services in the Province of Ontario.
I'm not quite sure about the english system on paramedics. There is the EMT with a shorter training than the paramedics. Someone here was even talking of university degrees (Bsc) in Paramedic science, how does that work?
Is there any chance someone from the outside of England could work with an ambulance service for a short period of time?
hi jake, if you want to go straight into the ambulance service as a paramedic then youre going to have to get a foundation degree or a Bsc Degree in Paramedic Science (Greenwich, Kingston, Hertfordshire and Lancashire all do the degree). If youre not looking to go to uni, then im really sorry mate but you have to wait till your 21. This Im my opinion go for the degree at least foundation, and work your balls off at school now to get the grades !!
hi i am jake i am 14 yrs old and i have wanted to be a paramedic since 5 years old (10yrs)i have taken my maths english science and health and social care gcse;s which i have this year ((((read the next two comments))))
i am hoping i am going to get a C grade which is what you need to get in but i have been told i am likely to get a D so unless i pull my socks up i am screwed but im sure i will as i am keen to become a paramedic.
some questions i have for the paramedics in the london ambulance service or with the united kingdom:
Q1:what grades do you need?
Q2:where do i go after my gcse's?
Q3:what is the easiest root into the job?
Q4:do i have to become a ambulance technition before i become a paramedic?
For direct entry route into the NHS as a paramedic, you need to gain a minimum of a foundation degree at University. Otherwise you'll have to start as and EMT, after two years you can then train as a paramedic. For EMT's its 5GCSE's grade C or higher including english and maths. Most trusts also ask that you have a provisional of full C1 & D1 on your drivers license. I'm a territorial army medic, they've helped me gain all the necessary qualifications to apply.
i was in an ambulance yesterday and a paramedic had 2 cum and help coz i had a servere asthma attack and kept fainting it was scary they r gr8 and do good jobs
Big HEY to paramedics all over the world. i'm 22 working as a paramedic my first year. im very interested in your equipment and stuff that you are working with. is there any way to contact with some of you? greeting from Lithuania! if You are interested in friendly chat or just exchange of information, im waiting for PM's
well this is a great video, my classes mates told me to come check out the videos on you tube, i am a student here in nova scotia to become a paramedic, and i got to tell you it is inspiring to hear your perspectives and to get to see it from another country..
thanks for a great video! i am a paramedic from South Africa, interesting to see you guys use response cars, thought South Africa was the only country to use a two tiered system with paramedics on response cars, and ambulances manned by EMT's (except here, we dont have Paramedic ambo's, Paramedics only work on response cars, barring the rare ICU transfer vehicle.)
What was the presenting rythm of the stabbed chest patient on scene? if it was asystole, why didn't they declare him dead on scene?
As a medic I agree with honghuli. I would suggest that you 'only ash remains' attend a up to date Resus course but with your nick name maybe you just want ashes to remain for your patients? In fact don't comment on such little things, these guys work hard and know what their doing!!!
very good. this was put together well. thanx for sharing your service with us. I think that it is fun to watch how other counrties EMS work. thank-you again (from USA here)
thank you very much for your comment. I have actually made this video as part of a University course. I am not a paramedic but went onto a couple of shifts with the above gentlemen. I also have great respect for the job that these people do 9and it is very true what you say, most people are actually old people or people that want to be cared about in any way, however, still an amazing job. This is why I made this short documentary. Best, prittlelincess
I love this video. Great job! I work as a first aid attendant and I respect the hard work they do. I'm going into paramedic training soon as well but it's not about me lol. Again, great video!
Nice work if you can get it. More true to life would have been picking up abusive drunks, responding to a 3 week cough, pt with a minor nosebeed, cut finger and of course various minor aches and pains the GPs can't be bothered with.
Such glamour... Seriously the rare "real" jobs make up the the rest of the dross. Save 999 for real emergencies, take a cab or one of the many cars on your driveway...
Spassmacher, you are wrong. As a paramedic in the U.S. I disagree with you wholeheartedly. Maybe the people you know are substandard individuals, but generalizing is prejudicial and a true mark of ignorance.
dear sir,i take my hat of to you for all the hard work you do,am a carer and i deal with the public with m d health issues and pallertive care.i know money is not what its all about, but the nhs and all its teams must be payed more.the met police are there to safe gaurd money, the 999 teams are there to safe lifes.keep the dam fine work.respect.
I wish that the United States adopted a model like the UK has with their EMS systems. In the US, EMS is a failing system marked by low standards, little organization, and crippling politics. It is a system where profit and money-making is put before the patient. There are areas that take pre-hospital care seriously, but this is the exception not the rule.
Yeh I think they do a great job have a lot of respect and time for them, hopefully by the time I've completed my A-levels I will get into a uni to study paramedic science
you are about to make the biggest mistake of your life, trust me i work in this shitty job, dont do it pal get a real job as the degree is not worth nothing!!you have been warned
Great video and excellent music chosen for it! It's good to see the daily life sort of of a paramedic, to really understand what you do. :) I am a student in college interested in studying to be a paramedic.
Check out the Western Australia ambulance service. And on you tube if you type St. John Ambulance Austriala or Ambulance on P1, this will bring up a quick video of our ambulance and you maybe able to hear the 3 different sirens.
That was a realy good video, I am studying to become a paramedic in australia, i also work for the local ambulance station and it has been a great time gaining skills and knowlege about the job. Very good, i hope to see more videos when you get time to do them, W.A dont really have a rapid response only in NSW.
You have been in the job 15 years excellent, there are a few london paramedics that work at my depot and i have heard alot of really good feedback. My station manager who has been in the ambulance service 20 somethings years, has nothing but praise for the UK ambulance service, i hear it is one of the best in the world. I know it is hard work and looking forward too it as well.

to do this job did you have to do a paramedical science degree? if not what was the training like?
bmahy1 1 year ago
@bmahy1 You have to first get what's called the EMT-B certification then you can move on to paramedic school. The courses are accelerated so they are generally only 16 for the EMT-B and anywhere from 6 months to two years for the paramedic course. Lemme tell you though I've done 18 credits at a university and this class was harder then that.

@westy1325 Certainly in London, Emergency staff do get paid more than if they work out in the country.

@ikeashiasanders29
Good luck.
Prittlelincess 1 year ago
@Prittlelincess I can tell you, being a medic myself, your head is in a different state of mind on a majority of the emergencies you do respond to. Ofcourse certain calls do effect you but make sure you do talk about them with others and they will not give the same effect.
For example, respond to a car accident you are worried about the equipment and what you will need to help this person, not so much their situation, only their condition and needs.
AttPro 11 months ago

If i dwell on the past then i can't concentrate on the current casualty and that puts their life at risk .
pcjoel999 1 year ago
@ikeashiasanders29
Shawnacles 1 year ago
@ikeashiasanders29 Im a paramedic. the job "de-sensitizes" someone. ive had calls that i dont share with anyone, but a co worker, because i dont want them to know how jaded i've become and dont want them to think ive become apathetic towards human life- but its a "coping" skill that comes with the job.
in my city, 80-90% of the calls are for people who dont need ambulances.
to answer your question, if you become a paramedic, you cant internalize the calls you get. Just do your job.

I'd love to be a paramedic but I just don't know how well I would cope in really stressful situations. I still have a few years to decide though.
Is it possible for me to ride along with a paramedic to see what the job is like and how I would cope? Or is that not allowed?
Also, what other job opportunities are there for paramedics?
I don't want to become a paramedic and find it's too stressful and be left with nothing.
Zildjian285 3 years ago
ride alongs are allowed dependant on the service protocols of who you want to ride with, you would have to contact the service administration office to be considered, i know here you have to have a minimum certificate and training level to be able to go on one but they are a lot of fun and really helpgul to find out if this is what you really should be doing, there are plenty of other job opportunities for paramedics including safety consultants and paramedic instructors.
cmu0 3 years ago
Your ability to be able to implement and undertake clinical intervention is your coping mechanism for a stressful situation. You have the knowledge, skills and attitude to help someone in crisis. After the case, you will have time to reflect on your clinical management of the patient and build on the positives and negatives that flow from that. After 30 years as a career paramedic, I still don't find the job 'stressful'. Good luck for the future, you will make a fine paramedic.
aussieambo 3 years ago
ride alongs are allowed in some areas, but not others...

Yes you do have to be good at math. Imagine (for those that don't know) that you have 40mg of a drug in 100ml of fluid and you have to give 5mg of that drug. How many ml are you going to draw up? Now imagine that your adrenaline is pumping, a patient's life is DIRECTLY in your hands and your answer to the question could be whether he lives or dies. Stressful, huh? :) Great video!
MedicJFarmer 3 years ago
Why not pour out the 60ml of fluid and have a 1mg/ml in your syringe? KISS = Keep It Simpe Stupid ;)
Kakkapaja 3 years ago
Because due to simple diffusion and osmosis, you can not simply introduce a 100% solute concentration to a patient's blood vessel. Well, you could, but you would do much more harm than good.
Torojon 3 years ago
Due to simply diffusion, osmosis, and other extremely biological functions, you cannot simply introduce a 100% solute concentration to a patients vascular system. The meds would not enter the patients body. Most meds must be diluted, HEAVILY diluted in saline/bi-carb.

5 mg is 1/8th of 40, 1/8th of 100 is 12.5. ;)
This isn't hard math. Paramedics don't need to integrate or do multivariable calculus to save lives. Don't scare away people who are bad at maths!
leviathan85 3 years ago
Paramedics also don't need to be underestimated. People still need to have at least a high school education of math to do about any job well. If fractions or any type of applied math scares away people from achieving a job, I think they should go back to high school.

In Switzerland we have several possibilities to work with an ambulance service (translated approximately):
1. "transport aid" 9 days training. Carries equipment, basic stuff
2. EMT, 1 year
3. paramedic, 3 years training
4. nurse (?) with specialty in anesthesia +/or emergency care. depends on service: can replace a emergency physician
5. emergency physician, working as a normal doctor at a hospital, but beeing on call for ambulance
Not every service uses the 5 types, all of them have 3. though

Q3:what is the easiest root into the job?
Q4:do i have to become a ambulance technition before i become a paramedic?
Paramedic2bee 4 years ago
For direct entry route into the NHS as a paramedic, you need to gain a minimum of a foundation degree at University. Otherwise you'll have to start as and EMT, after two years you can then train as a paramedic. For EMT's its 5GCSE's grade C or higher including english and maths. Most trusts also ask that you have a provisional of full C1 & D1 on your drivers license. I'm a territorial army medic, they've helped me gain all the necessary qualifications to apply.

You will find that every state in Australia has some type of fast response, solo intensive care paramedic or medical director in metro areas.
