I frequent a Starbucks in a minimall in my town, which is down the street from a Target. a few days ago I had to go into that Target to get some stuff, and while I was there I noticed they'd replaced their shitty cafeteria type area with a Starbucks. I literally had a cup of Starbucks coffee in my hand as I walked, unknowingly, into yet another Starbucks.
at that point, two thoughts entered my head:
1 - damn, I wish I had a watch to see if time stands still
this happened in pueblo colorado growing up....but with mcdonalds. there was 1 in the walmart, then another in the walmart parking lot which was down the street about 2 blocks from a mcdonalds.
As others have said, he's talking about Houston. And even better... after he did this bit, Barnes and Noble opened a big store in the same parking lot as one of the existing Starbucks. And guess what's in the lobby of the Barnes and Noble? That's right-- ANOTHER Starbucks! That's THREE in a two-block area. W.T.F.
Since I've lived here, I never really knew about the end of the universe (granted it's a joke but lewis isn't exactly wrong). When I went to visit the end of the universe, standing between those two starbucks, I felt as if my life had already ended.
Houston shall no longer be known as H-town. Lewis has renamed it to "The End of the Universe".
Starbucks actually does this on purpose(according to my insane physics teacher) he says that they have done research that shows, people love Starbucks, but not enough to cross the street in a big city to get it. Ideally(for Starbucks anyways) there would be at least one Starbucks on every block.
Yep, he's referring to the corner of West Gray Street and Shepherd Drive In Houston. It's in the River Oaks neighborhood. I live in Houston, and I can attest to the fact they're right across the street from each other. It's bizarre.
@AhKiLLeeZe he's referring to the River Oaks shopping center specifically. I was just there this morning. And actually there are THREE at that location if you count the Starbucks inside the Barnes and Noble right next to the Starbucks on W Gray.
I believe it's Tropicana Drive in Las Vegas, you can see a 7-11 across the street from another 7-11. Right down the street from where the Liberace Museum used to be.
There are two radio shack's in the mall in my town. one right above the other. I asks the teller of one if he was aware of the existance of the other. he wasn't. I don't go to the mall much anymore.
Also, I would just like to say that Dunkin Donuts is invading my town.
@HowlingWolf518 No, we just love our coffee. Though the reason we've allowed Starbucks up here still escapes me. I'm just glad I've yet to see one in Northern Ontario.
Well, you go into the one on the south side of the street if you want to sit a while. You go to the one on the north side of the street because it has a drive-through, or because it's on the same lot as the bookstore. So much more convenient. So much more civilized.
yes, he was talking about a trip to houston. i'm pretty sure he's talking about the intersection on westheimer and post oak in the galleria area. it's 100% true.
@deemilieu Nope, he's referring to the two on West Gray and Shepherd. As a native Houstonian, I came to Black's same conclusion before he ever addressed this atrocity.
@CaptainProwler There are actually a lot of words that sound so strange after you hear them ~10 times in quick succession. Pick any 4 or so lettered word and say it 10 times. In extreme cases, you'll temporarily go "Wow, who came up with ____? and what does it mean?"
@AhKiLLeeZe I work at starbucks coffee myself in Englewood, NJ, we have no complaints about having too many starbucks in NJ, i mean, there are not that many out there these days due to the economy and stuff, they had to close a couple down. I mean, it isn't the end of the universe
I live in Houston, and at the corner he mentions there are actually now three Starbucks at the same corner. The third is in the Barnes and Noble they built right behind one of the Starbucks.
