Trying to identify the engines in these fantastic rigs. Need to up the skills. Early on I could mosty see Chevy powering those slingers but then, I believe, a variety of Hemi's started to appear.
Jerry Ruth could have been there but wonder if Big Daddy Garlits and the Swamp Rat made it up to Washington during this?
Another research project for web surfing ...
Thanks for sharing some amazing racing history. Seeing that early rear engine digger was especially awesome.
I am too young to have seen this type of drag racing but it gives me goose bumps to watch this film . Now all dragsters are almost identical and sponsership everywhere I think I was born too late , thank you so much from Australia for posting this footage.
the good old push start days with no reverse. My dad talked about how much they hated it when their driver would do a long burn-out and then every pit guy would have to run out and push it back to the line.
Gret video! I started going to Pacific Raceway when it was the old "S.I.R." (early 70's) Still remember seeing all the "old timers". Don "the snake", Ed "the ace", "fireman Jim Dunn, Jerry "the king", and many local drivers. Who can forget "16-32-64" funny cars. Only bummer was the long "burnouts" no reversers, they had to be pushed back. But what a great time. Drag racing has come a long way (maybe just a little bit to commercial now) but still the greatest motorsport on the planet!!!
this is a excellent video, i presume 8mm film, nice and clear great color, well filmed,. if you get this converted to dvd or blueray, since there is no sound, doesnt matter, add some old beachboys tunes to it or something of that period in rock and roll, it would be awesome, i remember those days like yesterday, they were the best days of all!
PietjeZz, you're right - this was before Xmas trees came on the scene. If I remember right, the flagman's name was Larry. Crazy dude. When they were running elims and he was out there between the cars, he'd wave the flag and then run like hell!
In the early-mid-60's the fastest cars were running 8's. I recognize a bunch of those cars. I was probably there that day. My Dad and I were track photographers then.
Looks to me that there is someone standing about 20' from the start with a green flag. You can just see him in a couple of the runs about a minute and a half into the video.
Good ol' S.I.R
