the gadgets represent both icons of storytelling like the top from inception and also the power Olivier is waving in front of Milo to show his power, or rather, superiority. As the point of the game was "humiliation" which is an exploitation of each other trying to gain power by destroying the others'.
Who needs a "modern" version, having a master piece already? I think Kenneth Branagh did this awful remake just to get the first movie known and really appreciated... :P What a master piece of acting by Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine, what a awsome script by Shaffer and what a wonderful director mister Joseph L. Mankiewicz behind the camera. In some centuries ahead, it will more and more be referred to as the true classic it is. This remake will deserves being forgotten.
I Loved this movie. There are no other people/crowds/traffic-- even the house interior is minimalist. All attention goes on the ACTORS and the roles they are playing. And... they are Great actors. Always loved the 72 version, but compared to this, it was somewhat dependent on the gadgets Olivier had in the house.
I watched the classic original a couple of days ago, and it was awesome. Heard bad things about the remake, but this should be interesting at the least
this is a good remake both equally as great with their own qualitys, I love them both with the same love, only big change is michaels age, the acting on the other hand has not decayed one bit nor might I ad has he or the plot. He acts the role of andrew with perfetion and Jude steps into his partners shoes brilliantly. If in 20-30 years time they make another sleuth i bet jude plays the writer, that would mean both actors in this film would have played milo, andrew and alfie. Imagin that.
@rosalindhulse Haha. That'd be really cool. LIke it becomes a film tradition to continually remake Sleuth with the younger actor to come back and play the other role.
Intolerable nonsense with the overrated pretentious talents of Branagh, Pinter, Law and Caine. Just excrutiating, arty-farty, up its own arse, meaningless nonsense posing as culture and sophistication. Crap dialogue so stitled it could be read off cue cards. No flair, no enthusiasm, just leaden.
This is not really remake of the movie from the 1972 but it is rewritten by Harold PINTER from the original play by Anthony Shaffer! And it is done really great! With incredible team CAIN/LAW/BRANNAGH/PINTER......so I do not really understand
judging this new version like crap....or it is not like the old and etc. Why? It is something new and incredible dialogs!!!! Caine himself wouldnt do a remake of the old version, where he was casted too! Thanks for this artists!!!!
@nathanielselby Honestly, the great Harold Pinter, who wrote this version, puts so much heavy subtext into the dialogue that it makes it that much more entertaining. They are saying one thing aloud, but meaning 3 other things as they say it
Interesting to see this. I did not know they did a remake. I was not fond of the first movie they made back in 1970...something, as I don't care for Christopher Reeves, so this will be interesting to see how it unfolds as a remake
The dialogue in this movie is much subtler than in the 1972 version.
The original is brilliant - but it's too simple - all right brilliant acting, a plot even but you can always tell who those two characters are - they are verging on the typical - not here though, in this version, something's always griping your guts. The threat of bare human instincts exploding - love it.
I don't care how good THIS movie is---it can't POSSIBLY beat the original. I urge everyone to see the original with Lawrence Olivier and Micheal Caine from 1972 before seeing this. If you've already seen it... my condolences.
hes in both of them, ill watch this one now and the other one baked, cus i cant watch shit movies while im baked, i analyze to much of it, so only good ones when im high, and that usually ends up being older films, so yeah ill watch that one. its kinda like paul newman in that pool movie, the color of money right, and hustler except not really
Three different times the original came on TV, and three times I've only been able to see the last twenty minutes of it- without fail! It's frustrating, but I must say, from what I saw, I thought it was an amazing film, and definitely one of my favorites, though I've only seen so little. Fantastic. *****
Aw... too bad. I'm a huge movie buff and my parents bought it when it came out. It's in our basement and its incredible!!! Shame that you saw the ending because it sturn after turn
if your not a fan or not familiar with the playwright's work (Harold Pinter) then you probably won't enjoy this adaptation (if you love the '72 version)
i wish it were possible to evaluate a filmù and its actors without comparing it to another.
It would be interesting for someone who doesn't know the 1972 Sleuth to make a comment or two. The latter of course was also an ADAPTATION of the stage play by A Schaeffer, but noone makes comparisons.
In 1972 divorce was more scandalous than in 2007, references to the second world war were still possible in 1972, but in 2007 old soldiers are getting fewer and fewer....
I didn't know the original movie. I knew it existed I just hadn't seen it. I absolutely loved this movie the first time I saw it. It's a combination of the setting(the clever angles), the actors and the amazingly intriguing story.
In my opinion Michael Caine is amazing as always, and Jude Law in this movie proved to me his talent as well, even though I never questioned it.
I will probably enjoy the 72 version even more the day that I
will see it(and ofcourse I will), but to me this is very contemporary and it does nothing but fascinate me. And I can't complain about that. English is my foreign language so I appologize in advance for any shitty grammar. A film very easy to hate I suppose, but I do think this film is wheather or not an adaption an entertaining film.
I got really hyped for this film. I saw the original like three years back and when i heard that they were making a remake, I knew that I had to see this. What I got was very dissapointing. The twists were bad, the characters strange, the plat elements stranger, and the ending was a complete diaster. Wike doesn't get what he deserves?!?! What the fuck is that all about?
it's an adaptation! Harold Pinter...one of the most infuential wirters in theatre and film wrote this version. and this is his style. strange characters? Exactly. You think it's "strange"...that's the writing of Pinter. It's absurd within a naturalistic setting. You need to know his work to FULLY appreciate and understand this adaptation.
With very few exceptions (Ocean's 11) all remakes are crap. This one especially so, because the 1972 original was so very good. And so funny! This pointless retread is utterly lacking in humour. Well, Pinter was dying so he can be forgiven. But Branagh's look-at-me sterile direction, with everyone trying to pretend the Mankievicz wasn't 100 times better...God knows what Michael caine was thinking. Tax bill tax bill probably. Look, go YouTube, type in Sleuth 1972 and watch. You will love.
Michael Caine had the talent to stand toe-to-toe with Lawrence Olivier in'72, but Jude Law can't keep up with Caine-and what's with Kenneth Branagh's icy cold
direction?
You really don't feel anything for either one of these men, in the '72 version they both have their sympathetic side, you could root for either one from scene to scene that was the fun- what happened?
Italain Salami?..best in the world. Lame. No disrespect to Pinter or Michael Caine of course but the original is far superior and Jude Law is a child. And I'm 26

This film is, unfortunately, terrible.
The original had a good amount of humour to lighten the darkness of the plot, which was very much needed. However, this version has only dark humour that makes the experience all the more disturbing and depressing. Although intelligently scripted, Pinter has massacred the basic idea of the story and has completely misinterpreted Shaffer's intention. The first half I've seen so fare sucks! Man this banter back and forth between the two of them is rubish. The seen as yet is crap and the dialog is worst! Who ever wrote this script is a very bad writer.
Because there is no story! It's just banter back and forth and nothing you can make sence of. Like why we're they playing the game, who told him to go, why did he go to get the man's sign for a divorce but in the end he said she came back to him? It's a stupid story and if it was a good book then this director took it and fucked it up!
But it's a game of wits, and these very interesting shifts in power in their relationship, the goal of the story is who will win? and did she really come back to him? Or was he lying, was that part of the game?
It has the subtlety of a stage play. The banter is there so you can understand the characters and their positions in the story and with each other. At this point its a little deceptive because it seems like they could be friends, when they are, in fact, mortal enemies. It really takes patience to get it and enjoy it, you have to see it for what it is, a power play between two people.
It made no since and there was nothing interesting in this film. The game was silly and childish! The banter is like a druck trying to tell you his life story while he blow chuncks in his toilet. I wouldn't even watch this directors films any more. If this is the real story from the writer then his prize I can't understand at all. This book would be worse then the movie.

It's worth watching if only to realize how much better the original is.
