If I ever go to Memphis USA I will go to cemetery to pay respects to this great musician. It is shame he died so early. He could have given us so much more of his genius.
I love how he just stops talking and just simply smiles and joins in the jam all of the sudden. He really was caught up in the music and I can say that it's such a beautiful thing too.
this video is priceless and deep on so many levels, being music is soooo universal, i would luv 2 travel the globe and play with locals in every town..
the priceless expression on his face when he knows he gets to chime in with the wild world solo which not everyone knows how to play even if they know how to play the chords. he is so sweet jai gurudev om
@Kingding6 Agreed, it is very sad to watch!.... though at least we know Shawn was really happy to be there, he'd wanted to travel to India for many years. Also, i know personally that this is Shawn's own daughter's favourite video of Shawn.
@Kingding6 Why man? This video makes me so happy...it's lane in a casual setting...did you see how he lit up on that Cat Stevens riff? Super cool to me.
Playing country style with indian music, who else could have done that but Shawn Lane ??? he definitely was in another planet than us, poor humans ......
Per the timelines stated on the official website (as far as when he made his trip to India and when he died), this was taken not too long before he passed away.
Tremendously sad, but the video really speaks to what sort of soul the guy was. His absolutely monumental musical talents aside, he just comes off as that sort of person who you know is genuinely good on the inside.
Yeah,Shawn,Becker,Howe,Govan,Kotzen,Schakinger,Vai,Satch,YJM,Etc,etc,It dawns on me how lucky we are to have so much amazing music to listen to and aspire to in our lifetime.everyone brings something of their own to the table, one thing about Shawn is that really the whos, who of modern instrumental guitar virtuosos all praise Shawn and IMO humble as it is Shawn was arguably the greatest player to ever pick up the instrument.RIP great one..Gone but never forgotton.
I made a backpacker two years ago, just like that one! It was in school, but still a pretty serious project, which took the whole year (only one lesson a week though). Something I don't get though is the balance - the head and neck is too heavy so it tilts from you!
I met shawn in Little Rock, AR in '87. I brought a portable recorder to one of his gigs, and between sets I asked his permission to record him. Shawn not only gave me his blessing, he came over between sets to listen to it and offer suggestions for positioning to achieve a better mix. At the end, we closed down the bar at my table talking about Charlie Parker, the history of certain musical instruments, and a mutual friend of ours -- Mike McGowan (I hope I spelled his name correctly).
Hey there... thanks for the little Shawn story..... yet again we hear about what such a nice down to earth guy he was!
I'd love to possibly check that recording out someday if you wouldn't mind trading a copy of it for any of my Shawn shows i have (on dvd or cd), that would be greatly appreciated!! :-)
Do you by any chance remember a date for that gig, and which club it was in?? Also, if it was 1987, was it with The Willy's?
I've spent years now trying to compile the most complete list of gigs Shawn played in his life, but i've never heard of a gig he played in Little Rock, AR in 1987.
I know Shawn played in Little Rock a couple of times in 1979 with BOA, again in Dec 1992 with Powers of Ten band (i'd LOVE to hear that one), and again with Hellborg and Sipe in 1996.
It was definitely the willys. I can't remember the exact date, but if my memory serves me correctly it was a place called Cafe Lugano's---not sure if the place still exists. I moved to Alaska in October of the same year and haven't been back since. Unfortunately, the cassette tape of that night ended up somewhere in the Alaskan Wilderness, but that's a whole different story. I have a friend here who I made a copy for, but I haven't seen or heard from him in almost 10 years now.
Hi.... that's a shame about the recording, but thanks for the info you were able to remember, that's a great help, i've made note of it. I guess at least you're one of the 'lucky ones' who got to see Shawn in person (and even better... 'talk to him'). Unfortunately i never got to see Shawn in person.
Can you say "Deliverance"? Looking for the mute banjo player in the tree, lol...but seriously, Lane was in a class by himself and one of, if not the best guitarist ever .
He had a disease that required him to take steroids to treat it which caused to him to gain extreme amounts of weight and he weighed about 300 before he died or somethin like that.
Knowing how ridiculously fast Shawn could play...I was pleasantly surprised to see the glowing smile take over his face when the other gentleman started playing 'Wild World'.It shows that Shawn was interested in much more than speed. For anybody that thinks it's about his speed check out the song he wrote for his sister called 'Epilogue For Lisa'.If you listen to it seriously,it can speak to your soul.
It was broadcast on Indian TV. This was just a short clip i edited for YouTube.... the whole clip, including some performance footage, is about 13 minutes long. I re-authored the whole footage to DVD, with a menu, and uploaded it so anyone can download it for free. I have put the download link in the info section for this video.
Yeah it's really true, the more you see of Shawn the more you love him, what an amazing man. This would be my dream by the way, travel the globe and play with local musicians, sigh.. great stuff!
This video is heart-wrenching. There's something about the part where they launch into "Wild World" that really gets me. He doesn't look or sound all that good (as in his voice, not his playing) here. You can tell he was on the edge.
A true genius and an incredible human being. There aren't nearly enough of those who are both. All I can think now is, why him?
thank you so much for posting this! I read your description, and I can understand your sadness. But try to take the positive out of this. Obviously he was a one in a million kind of talent, but this clip shows what an amazing person he was as well. Even suffering greatly, he still had such a positive outlook. He was just having a good time jamming. He didn't feel sorry for himself, or get bitter about his condition, he just kept playing and stayed humble. The world needs more people like this
SHAWN made love to a guitar and when he would put it down...the guitar would light a cigarette...bask in the glow...and tell him, "You're the best I've ever had!":)R.I.P.
Shawn Lane playing cat stevens, this is my favourite clip ever, what a legend. my deepest sympathies to all those who knew him, both family and friends, and even greater sympathies to those who never got to. thank you for posting this.
