It's a real condition where a small hole deep inside her ear caused her to hear the magnified sounds of everything happening inside her body (her organs working etc.). Through an operation, the hole could be closed, and Haley didn't have to hear the sounds of her internal organs anymore, and could finally get peace to think straight, and return to being a normal teenage girl.
