I don't think either English or Dutch are bad spellings of each other but different spellings from isolation. To really see an example of continuity in intelligibility, look at Frisian, which is both mutually intelligible with English and Dutch. But Dutch and English are only semi-intelligible with each other.

Everything the English did, did the Dutch before them. Hudson was invided to come one a Dutch ship te explore the coast of the Americas.
New-Amsterdam was discoverd in 1609. The English toke it by suprise in peace-time in 1664, what causes the Second Anglo Dutch War. But the Dutch re-conquerd it in 1673.
The 17th century was Dutch and the Dutch were the 17th century.
The English couldn't do anything agaist it, they only re-write the glorious history of Holland in their own advantage.

You just don't get it, do you? It was never about territory, unlike the wild langrabbing by Great Britain (especially in Victorian times) there was a strategy to it, we didn't necessarily had to have the biggest empire, only the most important and economically wise.
It was about the economy, not international prestige.
