@stillofthenightcl I don't agree with this statement entirely, but respect your opinion. Rod is obviously a great drummer, but I think Mike is as good within the context of the music itself. I don't care for Mike's soloing per se, but he's a master inside the songs. I think Mike is much cleaner live as well. You can hear a lot of mistakes when Rod plays, and that is not a knock, just saying.
Stick general you are a knob. If anything the non drummers in the audience would be inspired to want to learn drums. The other thing is that good rock music or any good music, irrespective of its tag is good is because it isnt the run of the mill and out smarts any other artist that ticks the necessary box. What Rod is doing in his solo is a collection of his skills and traits that makes his own style, after all he's a jazzer at heart
The non drummers in the crowd must be bored to tears listening to this... Why would anyone want to listen to someone play along to a jazz backing track at a rock n roll show... Granted he is a great drummer... But anyone whose not a drummer is bored shitless. Rock and roll drum solo's are meant to be a visual thing not an odd time jazz play along thing. Winger is heavy rock leave the dreg stuff at the door. Just an opinion
Two different styles , come on!!!! what a stupid issue comparing who is best(Winger or the Dregs) . Is like saying "blue is better than green". its a kids game !
Great drummer.......at :58 he's copying what Neil Peart does with he crossover between the snare and floor tom. Never seen anyone else do that. (no where as good though IMO).
For me, music is not a contest. I like groups, each for completely different reasons, despite the common drummer (he's on my short list of all-time favorite drummers).
Remember seeing "Odyssey" live when 'What If' came out ('78). Awesome experience leaning on the stage (we're talking a bar that held a couple hundred), about 5 ft from Andy's Steinberger & about 2 ft from a monitor. Think my ears are still ringing today from it! LOL
As great as it was, you can keep the solo. Give me the last part when the music comes in. THEN you can really tell what an absolute MONSTER of a drummer Rod is.
He is a genius and one of the best drummers on the planet!!!!
Rod is one of my favorite drummers. He plays w/great feel. And always looks like he is having fun. He reminds me a lot of Gregg Bissonette, my favorite. They both can play just about anything asked of them.
Rod is an incredible player and amazing humble/kind/giving person and teacher. Just an awesome guy.

i hope he will be the new dream theater drumer because he is a good friend of jordan rudess and with john myung he is playing the jelly jam
lukasries11 1 year ago
@lukasries11 He is my first guess as well! because of his friendship with both jordan and myung. And Rod and Jordan toured with DT back in 98.

@Insectamongus Rod is my candidate too!!! IMO he is a better drummer than Portnoy, but Mike's structures are not easy to memorize.

Does anyone know what is the backing track he's playing to in the second part? Thanks!

The backing track is called Odd Man Out. It's in 5/4, & it's from the first Rudess - Morgenstein album.

This is just another reason why Winger is perhaps the most underrated group of musicians ever.
