the only reason this show won best musical is because of the overall weak category that season. it was/is NOT a great show, it was" luck" in the timing because it was nonimated with such lackluster competition. had it been up against really great shows, ie: the lion king, wicked, rent, jersey boys, book of mormon, ect, it would not have won. had it been nominated the year before, it would have lost to a truly brilliant show, billy elliot! smart decision by the producers to delay a year!

They deserve everything they are so amazing!!! I didn't want to cry like a baby during the performance but it was pretty close I was shaking in the end, it's such a fantastic show!

i met one of the actresses from memphis yesterday at this workshop my class did and she taught us the choreography while someone else taught us the music and she said that they were so excited that they won they couldn't dance ankept messing up until the choreogrpher or someone came on stage and told them to just have fun

This was just an odd season for Broadway, and I think that "Memphis" was the safe choice, even if it wasn't as groundbreaking as "Spring Awakening," as energetic as "In the Heights," or as entertaining as "The Producers."

I love both American Idiot and Memphis BUT when looking at both as a whole, Memphis comes out on top. AI refers to our generation and rocking out, but Memphis is more than rock and roll - it has heart and soul. Congrats Memphis! ^_^

@matt13r1 have you seen any of the dance numbers of the show? it takes a lot more work than the jumping up and down and god knows what the american idiot cast is doing. i love the ai soundtrack but memphis deserved to win

The only travesty was that Montego Glover lost out to Catherine Zeta Jones name power as she was the shining star on Broadway this year. Memphis was CLEARLY the BEST

@MiamiJoe739 Montego has powerful and great voice, but her acting pales in comparsion to Jones' superb performance as Desiree. The award goes to Best Actress, not Best Singer. Did you by any chance see Catherine in A Little Night Music?

I really think it should have been American Idiot. I'm not into punk at all but Memphis didn't have half the energy that AI did. It seemed kinda canned and cheesy from the scenes they showed.

@delusionaldiminutive totally agreed with you.... AI performances at st james theatre are full of energy, emotions, ideas.... American Idiot is a great musical, the best in my opinion... Michael Meyer made a great adaptation of punk music and culture into the broadway world.... is a shame that their hard work and amazing performances were not rewarded at the tonys.....
