The life expectancy is 44 years old. 1 in 3 Indian women are raped by offenders that are 88% non-Indian. Then over 50% of those assaults are not prosecuted by the BIA. There was not even a way for the tribal nations to go after the criminals themselves until 2010.

We both have special seats for the native populations in the commons and the senate as well as various other lestulatures, but differ in other areas that we are working on. Our general idea is to gain canadian citizenship or nationality to all American and Taiwanese natives as well as possiblty other groups like the Acardians, and make Canada more of the voice for natives in world wide affairs.

I for one am heartened to hear this. The Choctaw tribe, while not seceeding, has enjoyed tremendous success after leaving the government funding racket. Texas wants to secede as a state, and the people of Texas willingly joined the USA in 1845. The Lakota were forcibly absorbed through actions of the US military, so the situation is not the same.
@eier Texas last binding vote in 1861 was to get out. We were forced back in in 1865 by the actions of the U.S. military. Even when we joined in 1845, they rejected the treaty that we sent them and annexed us via a congressional resolution. A congressional resolution of one nation is not binding upon another.
Nevertheless, the Lakota were subjected to military aggression and gradually lost more and more land to non-Lakota, unlike Texas, which has had pretty consistent borders since its annexation. I think Lakota people have more of a reason to break away (and it's not even breaking away if you were never willingly together in the first place).
@eier Absolutely wrong! Look at the boundaries that the U.S. recognized for Texas when we were taken over in 1845. It includes half of what is now New Mexico, splits what is now Colorado and extends up to Wyoming. This land was taken from us. (the U.S. never finished paying for it as promised see Texas vs. White) This land was occupied by military force and granted to non-Texians. Both nations deserve freedom from the U.S. and should not be held by force.
Notice that in my previous post I said "since its annexation". The territory you mention was lost as per the terms of annexation, not after annexation. The Lakota continued (and still continue) to lose terrtory. Also, I think the percentage of Lakota who want to be independent is higher (I think Russel Means said 45%) than that of Texans who want independence, although I don't know the figure offhand (and I live in Austin, btw).
Once again, that is absolutely wrong. Our Northwest lands were taken by the U.S. in 1850 as part of the "Compromise of 1850". This was done 5 years AFTER annexation. While I agree (in principle) that both Texas and the Lakota Nation should be granted their sovereignty if they so choose, I don't think either would benefit from a complete separation from the U.S. Hell, if uber-Texans got their way they'd probably kick out every last illegal alien and drive their economy into the shitter. And I can't fathom how the Lakota Nation would support itself economically without US interference/excessive borrowing.

The problem is that it is impossible to give back land to its rightful owners because how do we know that the Lakota didn't chase the Shawnee off that land or any other group of people. This problem is seen all over the world, especially in Africa when a group of people does not have it's own state, but as we've learned there it's a delicate situation. I'm not saying things shouldn't be done for Lakotas to improve their situation, but giving them part of our country is out of the question.

Correct,Spanish are Europeans. However, they are two states, with two distinct histories of colonization. The Spanish came in the 1500's and tried to colonize the Navajo, along with Mexico. The English came to turtle island in the 1700's tried to do the same. So when I say we as in Navajo fought Spanish and European (English) colonization, that is what I am referring to. We fought, and we are still here, on our ancestral land, we are still Navajo. We are not going anywhere.

The life expectancy is 44 years old. 1 in 3 Indian women are raped by offenders that are 88% non-Indian. Then over 50% of those assaults are not prosecuted by the BIA. There was not even a way for the tribal nations to go after the criminals themselves until 2010.

We both have special seats for the native populations in the commons and the senate as well as various other lestulatures, but differ in other areas that we are working on. Texas wants to secede as a state, and the people of Texas willingly joined the USA in 1845. The Lakota were forcibly absorbed through actions of the US military, so the situation is not the same.

@eier Texas last binding vote in 1861 was to get out. We were forced back in in 1865 by the actions of the U.S. military. Even when we joined in 1845, they rejected the treaty that we sent them and annexed us via a congressional resolution. A congressional resolution of one nation is not binding upon another.

Nevertheless, the Lakota were subjected to military aggression and gradually lost more and more land to non-Lakota, unlike Texas, which has had pretty consistent borders since its annexation. @eier Absolutely wrong! Look at the boundaries that the U.S. recognized for Texas when we were taken over in 1845. It includes half of what is now New Mexico, splits what is now Colorado and extends up to Wyoming. This land was taken from us. (the U.S. never finished paying for it as promised see Texas vs. White) This land was occupied by military force and granted to non-Texians. Both nations deserve freedom from the U.S. and should not be held by force.

Notice that in my previous post I said "since its annexation". The territory you mention was lost as per the terms of annexation, not after annexation. The Lakota continued (and still continue) to lose terrtory. Also, I think the percentage of Lakota who want to be independent is higher (I think Russel Means said 45%) than that of Texans who want independence, although I don't know the figure offhand (and I live in Austin, btw).

Once again, that is absolutely wrong. Our Northwest lands were taken by the U.S. in 1850 as part of the "Compromise of 1850". This was done 5 years AFTER annexation. I did janitor work for two years, bachelor's degree, white collar resume and all, and I can say it was honest work.

This problem is seen all over the world, especially in Africa when a group of people does not have it's own state, but as we've learned there it's a delicate situation. I'm not saying things shouldn't be done for Lakotas to improve their situation, but giving them part of our country is out of the question.

Correct,Spanish are Europeans. However, they are two states, with two distinct histories of colonization. The Spanish came in the 1500's and tried to colonize the Navajo, along with Mexico. The English came to turtle island in the 1700's tried to do the same. So when I say we as in Navajo fought Spanish and European (English) colonization, that is what I am referring to. We fought, and we are still here, on our ancestral land, we are still Navajo. We are not going anywhere.

The Navajo sold out bigtime dude, whether you know it or not. They have a next to useless tribal government, which itself is based on that of the US and what you call your ancestral homeland, I call a prison camp.
Don't feel singled out over it though. Thats the what most native 'tribes' have been reduced to. It's what the Republic of Lakotah is fighting against.

Not our fault babylon invaded. What you call U.S, I call Dinetah. Reservations are prison camps, but our land and people are more than victims and can't be reduced to just that. Tribal governments are useless but that can change. Not all Navajos sold out, but we are living in this capitalist system like all the rest. Do you have a job? Do you pay income tax? Then your part of it too, we all are in the states, and we all need to get back to what's real, back to the earth.

I agree, I never said assimilation didn't work, it did, but not on all. I am not waiting on the U.S to change, I wait on their empire and ways to fall. Hell, plenty of Lakota are still on the warpath. This one guy explained it to me, as far as he was concerned he was still at war with the US and it was OK for him to steal from white people. Hey, there's even something to that, but it is not conducive to trust. Anyway, it's not like this applies to every Lakota in the World.
That said, I think that this is ONE FUCKING EXCELLENT idea.

Corporate greed and government waste don't justify secession. Not having representation in a supposedly democratic system could.
States however, do have representation and if you want more, rather than calling for civil war, maybe you should participate in local politics more. In 2004 and 2000 voter turnout was historically low.
So that's why so people agree with the issues you raise, but think this secessionist talk is unpatriotic and irresponsible at best.

Well then the fundamental disagreement between you and I is when cessation is warranted. However, we must be careful to avoid the rhetoric that cessation is the same as a civil war. The type of cessation I'm talking about would merely result in a halt to taxes paid by that state to the federal government, and in turn, a halt of federal services to the state.
I happen to be politically active if we're talking about me specifically, but I understand the point regarding turnout and concur.

All tribes, the native Alaskans and Native Hawaiians should declare independence. The sole reason is the U.S. does not honor international human rights protections. It is reluctant to and it violates its own declaration of Congressional plenary power, which it asserts with one hand. On the other, the U.S. allows incendiary federal court rulings to destroy tribal sovereignty one case at a time. The U.S. federal Indian policy is a joke all tribes should unite.
