Interestingly enough this is not a metal tube but a new composite airframe. Which makes this a massive achievement.  I prefer to fly Boeing aircraft when I have a choice.

Don't get me wrong, it's an achievement; It's just that our current form of aviation is severely outdated. The fact that we're still flying around in metal tubes (the equivalent of the horse-drawn buggy) is an insult to human potential and industrialism. Much of flying also requires skill and technique as it is still a fairly manual process, but Things have got to change. Aviation should open up to everyone / Far more people should experience flight.

@Youbian Aircraft are no longer really manual crafts, most landing are now done by auto-pilot, as is 95% of the flight. Pilots still have an important role though. And there are more efficient ways of flying, like the flying wing, but the reason that isn't implemented is more social, not technical. Since people don't want to be 40 seats from the nearest window. And the equivalent of horse and buggy? The 787 might not look as different as other planes but it's whats inside that counts.

shouldn't it have touched down a bit harder though to the weather conditions, there whas a big change of waterplanning. they have touched down with like -185 ft/min

while it should have been with over -200 ft/min. just GROUND CONTACT is the safest way to land in these conditions, not every soft landing is a good landing.

In flight the wings curve up because there's alot more composite material used in the 787. Wiki says in wing stress testing they were curved upward to 25 ft. The airframe is 3/4 composite (ie carbon fiber, etc.) Might see some heavy flexing in turbulence.

There is much more physics involved in the 787 wing design than Wikipedia reveals. The fundamental reason for the Dreamliner's upwardly curving wings is to increase the tendency towards a closed system. Although this can obviously never be achieved, the fictitious force (intertial frames) of upwardly curving wings makes the wings more efficient (when f = ma + mv + an infinite series of terms). Of course, the 787 upwardly pointing wings are also aesthetically pleasing. Peace out.

@justtakeiteasy actually if you look up "wingtip device" on wikipedia there's a pretty good explanation of the various devices. the 787 has a "Raked wingtip" which supposedly reduces vortices, increases lift (without increasing drag), increases the effective chord length. Very similar to the curved winglet of the 737's, but slightly more efficient.

I heard in one of the comments and information from previous research on the "dreamliner" - that boeing have out sourced a large percentage of the parts for this aircraft. Would that be part of a unified industrial platform as with airbus consortiums in germany/france/uk? or just companies making parts for whatever? I suspect generic manufacturers producing cheaper parts.

This is how Toyota cars ended up killing their passengers and hundreds of thousands of models are still being recalled.
