Amazing. I'm so privileged to do a project on Oscar Peterson for Black History month, as no one in my class chose him but me cause I totally knew his achievements and amazing jazz pieces.
Hey, where's the problem in having interest in a musician's gear preferences? It's at least as interesting as knowing whether a great novelist wrote on a typewriter or a legal pad, standing up or sitting down, and after reading a chapter of the King James Bible or after knocking down three fingers of bourbon. Oscar, as a matter of fact, was a featured Baldwin endorser for MANY years. Things change. Including Baldwin. In any case, nobody did what Oscar did as well as Oscar did it. On anything.
keep Oscar in yr memories, he was just great, not only as a pianist, not only as a musician, but most of all as a Man. He played on ANY piano. I remember almost 30 years ago in Hamburg ina little jazz club on a wreck of a piano, what he called it and it was. When the audience aof the ordinary gig there were gone, he played till the morning sunlight and talked to and advized the young local musicians. Like a good friend, professor, philosopher, id what a wise man shoud do.
It's almost two years since his death and I mourned him like I did my Father. My Mentor. He's very much alive, well and happily continuing his engagements throughout this planet huh! The ultimate in Pianists and playing here his anthem, so beautiful with heart, feeling, love and energy! RIP Oscar! In my eyes, your the best!
I was under the assumption that Oscar used Bosendorfer exclusively but that wasn't the case until the latter stage of his career. Starting in the 1940s he played Steinway for many years before switching to Baldwin. I know he also played on some Bechsteins, but it really wasn't until the 1990s that Peterson switched to Bossendorfer. Peterson did play on some Yamahas (including the Disklavier) while performing in Canada the last part of his life.
Mr Peterson was using Bosendorfer pianos in the late 1970s and early 1980s. I tuned and prepped an Imperial for him to use in Portland, Oregon during his "Oscar and Ella" tour in the late 70s. I don't know how long he had been using them before that.
Just to throw in my two cents... I understand Oscar is forever old here... But he really butchers his own tremelod climax and makes many other mistakes.
He is the greatest ever, but this is not the greatest ever...
Boseys aren't made for jazz? They were the preferred piano by the greatest jazz pianist (hands down) ever. Is good you are a better musician than Peterson... send me some stuff.
i think this was somekind of missunderstanding ;). first of all it's just my opinion about the piano. esbjörn svennson for example said he preffers steinways and yamaha pianos. i have played bösendorfers as well but i don't like the flat keys. it's difficult to describe in english. and oscar is phenomenal. maybe the best one ever.
Well, may be you were drunk but you were right. By the way, Erroll Garner's favorite pianos were Baldwin. But it has no meaning to compare piano brands as all pianos are different. And all great pianist can plan on any brand. If jakandmusic has problems with the flat keys, then he has to pratice a lot. A pianist shouldn't think his weaknesses are due the pianos brand. Just remember that Charlie PARKER played on a Grafton plastic saxo in Toronto. And Oscar played in Libanon on an upright piano.
absolutley amazing. my dad picked this song for his funeral and my cousin plyed it for him, oscar peterson IS still a legend, my cousin started playing piano because my father took him to see oscar in concert when he was a child and he never forgot. god bless oscar.. R.I.P DAD AND OSCAR....X
My Mentor, inspiration and one I have followed since childhood, we were so lucky to have this Icon for as long as we did. As Stevie Wonder says, he was the best! The King! And this piece is his Anthem! Truly Awesome! Your at peace pal, I'm sure! Cheers to the Master of Jazz Piano.
Oscar complimented Roger Kellaway on the 2007 IPO Records CD "Heroes" --Kellaway's tribute to Oscar and his late 50's trios. The CD won the French Jazz Academy's 2007 record of the year. Oscar said "he knows the form and he's fearless." Kellaway conducted the 2008 Carnegie Hall tribute to Oscar a few months before his passing.
@princessalikababy123 though it's a long time ago, I still want to give you my condolences, and tell you, that one and a half year ago, we burried my granddad, and I got to play this for his funeral service. :)
not a days goes by where I don't think of this great master! helped me through many troubled times and this piece alone played a big part! miss you oscar! you never gave up the game even when all odds were against, it's fair to say you are a Legend!!!
Sorry to hear this - he should have stopped earlier - try and hear the original version.

Isn't this after the stroke? And Oscar can still put on a performance like this? What was this man, a musical prophet?

Did he always play on a Bösendorfer? - does anyone know?
danishguy51 2 years ago
He has since early in his career.
journey999 2 years ago
did you find your answer and has it resolved your curiosity?
MikeyL 2 years ago
Probably, I've seen him play on it in other vids. Mind you, he'd probably use at least one different piano during those decades.

I was drunk and argumentative. You said nothing wrong.
Everything I said should be disregarded, your entitled to your well-educated opinion.
EuphoricDan 2 years ago 2
"You're" is the contraction of "you are". It's better you learn this now (unless, of course, that was a typo).
