@jwctex14 FMX really should only be 2-strokes. Anybody smart in FMX would only ride a 2-stroke. They are lighter (easier to maneuver), they have less rotating mass (easier to maneuver and control), and they have more power. The 30lb weight penalty isn't worth the 3hp gain. Especially when a 300 kit will easily get you more power than a 450...everywhere.

@TheOfficialKC 4 strokes are getting closer and closer to the weight of 2 strokes. The panic rev from a 4 stroke works better than that of a 2 stroke. If you are skilled enough, a 4 stroke is easier. They don't react as harsh from the lip of the ramp either.

@jwctex14 Like I said to yamaharules100, a 4-stroke will NEVER be as light. It is inherent to the design. It is generally taken that a 4-stroke will be ~8lbs heavier per quarter liter.

Not only does a 250 2t weigh 8lbs+ less than a 250F, it makes 15-20hp more. And a 450F is another 20lbs more then that.

How it handles on a lip of a ramp is based on suspension, not engine type.

@TheOfficialKC I don't know, my 250F feels a lot nicer and easy to move around than my friends 150. By off the ramp, I mean how the power is to it and through. It is smooth and consistant, unlike a 2 stroke where it can bog going too slow, hit the powerband late, or hit the powerband early and rev out. It's comfort anyway, if you race too, a 4 stroke is the way to go because it can suit everything.

@jwctex14 First off, you must lack riding skills. I grew up on 4-strokes and I rode a 125 for a summer and had no trouble keeping it in the powerband, even when I took it on tight, single track.

Second, and decent rider on a 250 2-stroke will smoke a 250 4-stroke. And if you really want that wide powerband, a ported 250, or even 200, will put a 250F to shame.

I have never been able to put a 250F where I want in a turn like a 2-stroke. Too heavy and understeer.

@TheOfficialKC I'm no pro, I can promise that. Not even close. I hate how inconsistant the powerband can be on a 2 stroke. I don't know if you realized it, but a 250R and a 250F aren't in the same race class. I like 4 strokes because the engine break is a lot more, and when you chop the throttle you move, not bog. I have a much easier time taking a four stroke around a turn then I do clutching and taking outsides for the same corner on a 2 stroke.

And, like I said before, you can PORT them to have 4-stroke powerband characteristics. A 250 will have more power, and wider powerband, than a 250F, while still weighing less and having less inertia.

The lack of engine braking is nice on 2-strokes. It is what allows them to float over braking bumps instead of slam.

@yamaharules100 KTM 250SX weighs 212 lbs. The 250SX-F weighs 220lbs. What do you know, 8lbs difference. And AGAIN, the 250SX makes 15hp more. Learn the difference in the design. The 4-stroke has valves, chains, cams, etc that a 2-stroke doesn't have. Until you can magically make that weigh nothing a 4-stroke will be heavier.

Ride a 300 and tell me a 2-stroke can't have smooth power. A ported 300 makes a 450 look like a 125.

Just because the stupid AMA is paid by Honda to give the 4-strokes a handicap doesn't make that a correct comparison. If it was equal displacement there would be no 4-stroke MX bikes because they are inferior.

Besides, both of us aren't pro, and in amateur racing you can ride any 250 in the 250 class. And the "450" class is open displacement. Freestyle has no displacement rules.

That "360 frontflip" is really just a wobbly front flip. Those brothers that were doing front flips were also doing that because they couldn't get it to rotate straight.
