I have been a fan of Kate's for many many years. And i have to agree i dont like this new version of this song. I will always love her music, but i dont like this particular song since it has been re-done. She came up with some really new ones recently, like how to be invisable..loved it. Want to see more new material not remakes of the older stuff. It was great when she put it out, if its not broke dont fix it.
Director's Cut should be recalled. What an album of shit. It's never good when an artist revisits old material. It can't be improved on. I don't know what the old gal was thinking.
@GINGERALER Kate's presented an alternative, along with the original albums converted to her preferred analogue sound. I prefer the original of this track but prefer some of her new takes over the original cuts too. She's undertaken this project in the best way possible by making the originals prominently available alongside it.
I think more and more that, getting "old", Kate becomes totally crazy ! If you consider her past, you can see that she was always excentric (choregraphies, makes up, etc...) and well, older, the character becomes stronger. And now, she makes absolutly what she wants in creation. A good thing ? Artistic creation is inseparable of constraints. Well, she was a great composer but i think now that she doesn't control anything. This new version of that great song is catastrophique
its like listening to the wind and the rain at the same time throgh an open window in a mild storm.not my favourite song from her .but we all have our favourites
Wow !! Kate really proves herself to be the magnificent artist she allways was said to be. This is completely different yet still as intense as the original. I think this is much stronger a proof of genious than a completely newly written album could ever have been. The original of 1989 has evolved, is matured and has been made up to date but did not loose any of its intenspower. It really has become a completely new masterpeace of music. I can only compare this with the Beatles "love" album.
I have followed Kate's work since 1985 and loved all her albums.....but....Director's Cut is bloody awful. Whenever an artist returns to previously released work to re-interpret, revisit, remix, or just to supposedly update it...its not a good sign. What was she thinking??? Kate, leave your back catalog alone and get on with new material.
One of the comments I"ve read referring to this new album is a whine about her reworking her songs she's previously recorded: hell, I'd listen to this gal sing the friggin' phone book! AND...she has an album of new material coming soon, so deal with all this beauty, this reworking of great material. She's a great artist; there IS something new is progressive pop! Just compare this to some plastic hip-hop diva crap that's so popular now...and tell me it's not better...
Fresh and full of imagination: it is SUCH a different experience to hear a TRULY talented pop artist, as opposed to a corporate diva, use technology and a creative mix to get their point across! She has been away far too long! Welcome back, Kate! I missed you!
I MUST SAY KATES MUSIC IS HER OWN STYLE IT'S HER OWN THOUGHTS HER OWN PRODUCTION. SHE DOES IT HER WAY OR THE HIGHWAY AND I GET HER! I CAN CHANGE GEARS AND LISTEN TO RUNNING UP THE HILL, LILY AND THIS SONG. THE U.S.A. IS WAITING HURY UP AND RELEACE YOUR CD KATE!!
In my opinion the original was already perfect, at least the chorus had a real melody! For my taste there was too much "Trio Bulgarka" (especially the solist part in the end).
It was a great idea to let Albert sing the chorus but then completely destroying it wasn't a good idea I think. 0_0
But all in all I'm so happy that Kate keeps on producing records! Yeah! :-)
I think her new challenge has started and the forst of her work well done even if It's feel like her voice was reborn by the singing synthesizer application such as "Vocaroid".
lazy kate bush WE DESERVE A NEW ALBUM NEW MATERIAL. REMEBER KATE no tours 12 year waite for areial and now rehashed tracks that are not as good as the originals you have an amazing studio i have evrey album but cant help thinking you are insultan your fans dont think we are going to buy evrey thing
Its really good hearing that Kate Bush has re-done and reworked her own music instead of all the rubbish remixes that people post on here (not all, as some are quite good i suppose). I've listened to this song over and over and i am only just getting to like it, very good but i prefer to original.
Sadly I stopped listening when the Sparky's Magic Piano voice started. This effect is the N N Notorious, N N N N Nineteen etc. of the current age, and already sounds dated.
It's interesting on Imogen Heap's Hide and Seek, Bon Iver's Woods, Sufjan Steven's Impossible Soul, or James Blake's eponymous album; apart from that it's ubiquitous (cf X-Factor auditions, dear god) and boring.
I love Kate's music, the quality of recording of piano and vocals on Aerial is astonishing and unparalleled. This
I know most of her songs since 1977, and liked it until 2005, with her Ariel dubbel-album. I think it is the first time she releases re-works of her own "old" songs. Perhaps I have to play this re-worked version of Deeper Understanding many times before being able to like it. That is a strange experience with a Kate Bush song . It never happened before. Relying on doing re-works of existing songs gives me the impression that she does not have much musical inspiration anymore.
@wvdpanhuysen i think shes just trying to do something different, i doubt she could ever run out of inspiration :) plus she's making them all totally different from the original, so its a productive album i'd say
@SheIsntReal94 You are right that she always wants to do something different. Hearing this song again, I discover some other instruments that did not feature on the original released version. I hope I will be able to hear the other songs on Director's Cut, ... in fact I want to hear the difference she brings now in her songs. Anyway, it is nice to hear something from her...
@wvdpanhuysen true ^^ im always so excited when my favourite artists come out with new things. i think leonard cohen may have a new album out this year too haha its a great year for music!
sometimes songs need a few listens, but then you cannot stop listening :D
No, that wasn't the reason Kate re-released this song.
When she made The Sensual World album, she had very little control of the production of her songs. She would write the lyrics and melody, but the production was assigned to someone else.
Like any true artist who is unhappy with their work, she remade the song. It's just as good (if not better) as the original, and now Kate's happy with it :)
@evanescent95 Thanks for your informative comment. I wasn't aware that the production of the album Sensual World was not in her own hands. When one gets familiar to the original version and thinks that she had control over every aspect of that album, it can be difficult to get used to the new version of Deeper Understanding. But after seeing her short film that accompanies the new version of the song, I believe this is a very good soundtrack to her short film which has a very actual theme.
@wvdpanhuysen Kate has fully produced all of her albums since The Dreaming. She reworked songs based on personal dissatisfaction with them; she wanted to breathe new life into the music. You can find recent interviews on youtube where she explains her herself.
It's great that she added Bertie's vocals as the 'computer', and although it's an artifically altered vocal, it' seems clear that he has his mother's vocal abilities!
@TheDeebri55 i agree, she's a brilliant woman ,and even doing old songs she manages to make them more unique than ever.im looking forward to getting her new album anyways :D
This version is better than the original. The chorus is better worked, and the extension of the song gives it greater meaning and oomph.
