Barry Davies was an excellent commentator. Better than the rubbish today, have to mute the sound, especially with lawrenson talking, about as entertaining and smart as toothache.
One of the best pieces of commentary ever by the brilliant Barry Davies! He exclaimed " Just look at his face!" with such emotion and excitement that he almost lost his voice! Hilarious!
By the way, neither Liverpool nor Man Utd wrote "You'll Never Walk Alone" - it comes from the Rodgers and Hammerstein Musical "Carousel". The film version was made in 1956. It is generally accepted that Liverpool FC adopted it as their motto (it is written on their team badge) and main fan song.
..shame Davies has retired from Football commentary......no waffling with endless trivia....just says what needs to be said......shame the Beeb never fully appreciated him...............
I miss not hearing Barry Davis's commentory for football. He is definintely my favourite with his deep kknowledge of sport and the use of such eloquent heartfelt language. He has also shown great versatility in describing the action of numerous sports. He is definintely superior to football specialists such as John Motson.
awesome commentary though i'm curious which set of fans are singing YNWA and for what reason. didn't think it was either club's song. any info on this would be much appreciated. thanks for posting this video!
Even though traditionally a Liverool song, all supporters sang YNWA in those days, albeit with revised lyrics; Man U fans sang "You'll never walk again", Chelsea fans sang "You'll never get a job" etc. West Ham's song "I'm forever blowing Bubbles", was always sung on the terraces at other grounds "Just like my dreams/West Ham they fade and die" Hope that answers your question, from a Chelsea fan who was there
thanks a lot mate. really appreciate it. i've heard other teams take the piss outta liverpool with YNWA but it's confusing how the fans in this video are singing the song. who's taking the piss outta whom?
It was never a piss taking song. In the 60's the Scouse bands like the Beatles, Searchers, Gerry & the Pacemakers songs hit the charts and were then sung by the Kop. They sung She Loves you by the Beatles too. YNWA, caught on, at other grounds and was sung everywhere. Liverpool, claimed the song as it was a Scouse band that got it to No.1 and the Kop first took it up as a terrace chant. YNWA sung in this game, wasn't a piss tak at all, because it was sung everywhere. Regards
Yep - in the 70s most fans sang it - I even recall it being sang at Roker Park - complete with scarves held aloft! - for the record it was city's fans singing judging by the pronunciation of the word "haarts" - that and no mention of me ducks ;-)
Barry Davies is a much better commentator than John Motson. Motson is okay, but he's got no sense of humour (those forced chuckles) and the scripted stuff he tops and tails major cup and international matches with is generally very cringe-worthy (e.g. when Denmark won Euro 92 - "it's dramatic, it's delightful...it's Denmark!"). Motson is Lineker's man though - the bland leading the bland...
Class act Davies. I remember him doing 88 Olympic hockey final when GB beat West Germany and commentating on a replay of a GB goal he said "where was the German defence? But frankly, who cares?" Brilliant
If I remember rightly after " just look at his face " Barry Davis then said "The smile of an angel on the face of a tiger"

John Motson is great, as long as you're able to comprehend why "It's dramatic, it's delightful, it's Denmark!" is terrific.

That's what happens when you sell a player of the calibre of Frances Lee to Derby County.
Who was it that sold him?
It wasn't Malcolm Allison, was it?

My favourite line of commentary ever! Sends a shiver down the spine. Thats what football is all about.
The newer breed of commentators just aint in the same league as the likes of Barry Davies, John Motson and the late Brian Moore to name a few.
gfc9chard 4 years ago
Agreed, the new breed just like to hear themselves instead of the drama unfolding in front of them.
The aformentioned likes allowed the chance to let you hear the sounds of Anfield, Highbury etc. as the drama unfolded.
