I know we can't compare players from different eras, not just because of the level of play back in those times as compared to today, but also the lifestyle. Back then, kids didn't grow up learning dribble moves and post moves off the computer. They learnt by getting out there, trying new ideas, and perfecting those ideas to the point of perfection, like the no-look pass, or the sky hook. Can't we just accept these greats for who they are? Legends?
I respect Cousy, but I don't think he would be an all-star if he played in the 90s up to today. He was good at hook shots with both hands and he was a smart ball player, but he lacked athleticism and his left hand dribble looked weak. Small guards like Isiah Thomas, Iverson, and Tim Hardaway with speed and better dribbling skills would likely tear him up.
if you think cousy wouldn't be a great player today, you are on crack. talent is talent. Humans have not evolved in 50 years. They just train better. So would he. Also, the RULES were MUCH different in his day.
When you see all this you can realize that is easy to improve something (cars, computers) but it was hard to create. Bob C. was creator his ideas, moves were incredible. Today players only improving game but he created a game
@L0rdAlabaster Those two dribbles he took with his left hand at @1:48 while his head was down looking directly at the ball prove that he couldn't dribble with his left hand. With his head down like that, there's no way he could dribble the length of the court with his left hand in a game because he wouldn't be able to see where he was going or who to pass to.
And, today's players are stronger and faster due to better science, nutrition and training methods, developing more skill in less time.
I disagree. Many of those old guys were uncoordinated compared with today's players. And, they competed against a much smaller talent pool. The US population in '58-'59, Bill Russel's 3rd year, was about half of what it is today. And there were no international players.
in this video, u can clearly see that Cousy had absolutely no "jump" shot, probably couldn't dunk and he could barely dribble with his left hand (2min mark). I doubt he would even start today. CP and Rose would embarrass him.
@omnivorous65 Yes. He could barely dribble with his left hand. Those old guys were great for their era, the early days of basketball, but they couldn't compete in today's game.
That's pretty obvious. That's like saying the T.V back in the old days are better than the T.V's that we have right now. The conditioning and workouts back then was way different than our era. Had they done the same workout, they would've adapted to our game and still would've been an all-time great.
@davidkkt34 I still disagree. But regardless, he's definitely an all-time great. Did you see him hit all those consecutive foul shots in the movie Blue Chips? Cousy has my respect. He did his thing when he played.
I think the reason why he is an all-time great is because he shaped the PG position into flashiness and coolness (if that's even a word). You look at the no-look passes and flashy passes he did, and you can compare him to our modern players. I didn't watch Blue Chips but I'll watch it.
I've heard he has disproportionately large hands and long ass arms for his height which are a definite plus. But he unfortunately has a very long, neck/sloping shoulders, so his standing reach wouldn't be as high as you might think.
dude i was just telling my co worker that this morning. hes getting around 27 ppg now and hes trying his best to get his team involved. if he pushed the issue i think he could get 35-40 ppg (kobe got 36 ppg a few years back when he pushed it). lebron in the 1950's really wanting to get buckets? id say between 50-55 easily. guys can stop him now, imagine back then.
Come on, man. You can't compare eras. If LeBron were born in the 30's, he wouldn't look like he does now. He'd look much more like Bill Russell. Guys today train from the time they're 10 years old to be bigger, faster, and stronger than the competition. Look at MJ at the beginning of his career compared to the end (1998). His body totally transforms because of the weight training. Great players are great players, regardless of era. Cousy, Mikan, Russell, Wilt, they'd all adapt to today's game.
im not comparing eras, man. im simply stating if you took lebron james out of 2009 and put him in the 1950s nba, he would avg between 45-50 ppg. i have all the respect in the world for the older players. the gyms they had to play in, the equipment the used, the training etc. pale in comparison to todays game just todays game will pale in comparison to the nba in 2050. wilt chamberlain is my hero but he wouldnt avg 50 ppg and 25 rebounds in todays game. no sir
I wz jus sayn it wz funny hw he playd him like dat.........is all......someone who could play in dis era and still be a great player and please da crod tho.....is Pistol Pete.....dats all......thank u.
kingbee10-With that 1 comment you proved your a dope when it comes to basketball. What happens when you swat the ball to the 3rd row? The opponent gets the ball right back. Check out the video Bill Russell Block Art and see how Bill Russell blocked shots and the Celtics ended up with the ball about 75% of the time. Something that morons like Dwight Howard should watch and they learn would learn something. Bill Russell Block Art on You Tube check it out and you'll learn something.
geocgeo- u made a good point and your right. but my point was he would block the shot (the part about it going into the 3rd row was unecessary, i didnt mean it literally, i just wanted to highlight the point). i'll learn something? any time you want to REALLY talk about basketball then you let me know.
Without Cousy none of this flashy play would exist. All the fancy passes and playing with flair was brought to the NBA by Cousy. Anyone who played this way after Bob was simply building upon and improving upon the foundation he laid. And the point gaurd line is Cousy-Maravich-Magic-Stockton-Kidd and Nash-and if everything goes well, Chris Paul.
Don't worry, I didn't forget Maravich. It's like the story of rock and roll, Bob Cousy is the father of it all (Chuck Berry) and Pete Maravich is the one who took it, made it his own, and exploded it (the Beatles).
Please, The Couse was on a level all by himself. He is the original and set the standard for a point guard. All others, from Magic to Paul are a distant second.
nah, the playing style back then and now was way different. he made his style back then and i'm pretty sure he would make his own now. the way of shooting was different and there is a 3 pointline now. bob cousy was the best point guard the nba ever had. he showed what the potential was of the basketball. it wasn't just forward or side passes.
one of the best point guards of all time along with Magic, Tiny, Stockton, and Roberstson. But the person who invented all of the amazing passes was this guy. he was atleast 20 years ahead of every other player. GO BOB COUSY!!!
ok i been reading these comments u all gotta shut up ok? Bob cousy is one of the greatest he played in the time of bill russell and Wilt Chamberlion thats 2 huge guys (russell was on his team) if u look there are plenty of black guys and color means shit in bball plenty of white boys are good Steve nash, J kidd,Kirlenkio,Ginobli now stop whining that he would get rhaped cuz he wouldnt maybe he wouldnt have made legend status nowadays but he would still be a all-star
i agree since iam a suns have steve nash does seem to play like his style but u dont see steve nash doing what he did at the point in the video at 55 seconds that is somthin no one can take but yes nash(my hero) plays similar
This video hardly shows his amazing ball handling and passing skills. There are not enough Cousy vids out there to show you punks how hard to defend he was. He was like a globetrotter with the ball. Very sneaky low to the floor player.
ok you're right i agree with that relative to the time he was one of the best players in the nba during that era but i would scrape him now he wouldnt make D1 college ball
wow, grasd2, ur a loser. u probably dont hav any friends cause ur a loser and ur a show off. u prob suk at bball and cousy is a freakin tank. hes better then nash and j-kidd. ur a retard
Bob was good, but the defense was crap back then, if you look at the play starting at 1:36 the defender backs away at a shot fake - that is just garbage... At the worst a player today would jump at a shot fake.
Just the fact that you bring up Nash when talking about Cousy shows how good Nash is, just like when they talk of Kobe vs MJ. If he wasn't good, he wouldn't be mentioned with a great AT ALL.
steve nash has flashy passes like bob cousy. but all steve needs is the ring then he'll be up there with stocton, cousy, magic, isiah, but stockton doesnt have a title.
Steve Nash is overrated. Point Guard- Disrupte the ball and run the fast break. Thats all he does. Magic rebounded and broke defenses down, Isiah split the d by himself when he was triple team, Cousy was just awesome offensvely and great scorer, and Stockton moved better without the ball and played great d. If Nash can do these things then he'll be up there with those cats. Even if he gets a ring, hes still a system playa. Holla!!!!!!!!!
no, but great point guards do more than run the fast break, shoot (not moving without the ball. Yes he did this in Dallas too!), and slash in the whole to get layups. Hell Mark Price is the best point guard of all time and he did this. Sike!!!!!
John Stockton did it. Oscar Robertson did this. Bottom line- Steve isnt great. Hes good. Thats it. Taken advantage of a weak league. In the 1980s and early 1990s, he would be good but would barely be top five at pg.
actually, all players, besides pg, have the common duty of raising the team FG% on offence, and nash's team has the greatest FG% because of his great passing, do other teams got it?
if your going to compare him to anyone it has to be john stockton, isaiah thomas and even magic to an extent, nash is yet to define himself as an upper echilon player...im doubting hes good but the fact is hes only really had 2 m.v.p's which is damn good but a championship defines a player as up there with the greatest.
ME and my friend always HAve heard of cousy but never saw him in action This is a great video but if you want a real good one theres a dvd Nash Is a great player but cousy will always Kick ass TOO BAd I CANT FIND HIS JERSEY FOR A REASonABLE PRICE NOT 600
u dont' know wikepedia said bob cousy is recoginzed one of the greatest position i history of the game.basketball is a team process today basketball is totally Dead it's a 1 man show only you know why?simple money, stockton, steve nash and other 90's their all joke they play one man show, cousy won 6 championship a team process not a showy process winning championship is not how great you are or a 1 man show true greatness is how to handle your team how to score your team how to invole ur teamate
yea pistol pete is wayaayayayayaya better because he could go left all of cousys highlights are of him goin right he had no left.wonder what woulda happened if someone shaded him left
He looks funny doing that stuff? ...doesn't age well? Revolutionary doesn't cut it. He's the father of modern basketball you idiot! Even the Globetrotters are still using his techniques to wow audiences all over the world. They probably don't know where it came from either. Give us a break and go practice your bounce passes.
I know we can't compare players from different eras, not just because of the level of play back in those times as compared to today, but also the lifestyle. yeah, i'm sure bill russell, wilt chamberlain, and oscar robertson were all white. they all played with/against cousy.

not oscar robinson he was black

Why compare apples to pumpkins? Cousy was a short, quick point guard; the other two were big, muscular centers!

yo did russel play w/ cousy?
AlphaBetaCool 4 years ago
Yeah, from 1956 to 1963. They won six titles in seven seasons during that span.
mackcrusher 4 years ago
I have uploaded the 1963 NBA Finales if you are interested. The last game of Cousy, who makes an exhibition.

The best basketball player of the world at that time.

Cousy is great. He and Mavarich are quite similar in terms of playing style. Nash reminds me more of Mark Price.

bob cousy the best point guard ever

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Bob Cousy sucks balls.
pward42590 4 years ago
Bob was good, but the defense was crap back then, if you look at the play starting at 1:36 the defender backs away at a shot fake - that is just garbage... At the worst a player today would jump at a shot fake.
JoeMarklin 4 years ago
but they did have Russel - so I guess people were afraid he would pass to him...
JoeMarklin 4 years ago
its not garbage
its justa different style
if bob was here today he would ajust to the style we play today
he did stuff that no one else did at this time

zomfg hes got some cool streetball moves^^(if he could dunk like mj he would be the HARDCOREGODFATHERBALLERMASTER^^
TsurugiStyle 4 years ago
Just the fact that you bring up Nash when talking about Cousy shows how good Nash is, just like when they talk of Kobe vs MJ. If he wasn't good, he wouldn't be mentioned with a great AT ALL.
Deadpool013 4 years ago
steve nash has flashy passes like bob cousy. but all steve needs is the ring then he'll be up there with stocton, cousy, magic, isiah, but stockton doesnt have a title.
whiteboy2468 4 years ago
Steve Nash is overrated. Point Guard- Disrupte the ball and run the fast break. Thats all he does. Magic rebounded and broke defenses down, Isiah split the d by himself when he was triple team, Cousy was just awesome offensvely and great scorer, and Stockton moved better without the ball and played great d. If Nash can do these things then he'll be up there with those cats. Even if he gets a ring, hes still a system playa. Holla!!!!!!!!!
AllWorldProduction 4 years ago
So, are you saying he should ruin his team's system?
He's also a great shooter.
SkunkyBeaumont 4 years ago
no, but great point guards do more than run the fast break, shoot (not moving without the ball. Yes he did this in Dallas too!), and slash in the whole to get layups. Hell Mark Price is the best point guard of all time and he did this. Sike!!!!!
AllWorldProduction 4 years ago
point guards don't really need to move so well without the ball since they have the ball most of the time.
tim21duncan 4 years ago
John Stockton did it. Oscar Robertson did this. Bottom line- Steve isnt great. Hes good. Thats it. Taken advantage of a weak league. In the 1980s and early 1990s, he would be good but would barely be top five at pg.
Tonylonnray 4 years ago
So true, people don't even make easy jumpers these days - back in the day a 15 foot jumper was a layup...
JoeMarklin 4 years ago
actually, all players, besides pg, have the common duty of raising the team FG% on offence, and nash's team has the greatest FG% because of his great passing, do other teams got it?
thegreatestchallenge 4 years ago
if your going to compare him to anyone it has to be john stockton, isaiah thomas and even magic to an extent, nash is yet to define himself as an upper echilon player...im doubting hes good but the fact is hes only really had 2 m.v.p's which is damn good but a championship defines a player as up there with the greatest.
Toran2222 4 years ago
Tow win a Championship, you need to be good as a team, not just have one good player.
SkunkyBeaumont 4 years ago
ME and my friend always HAve heard of cousy but never saw him in action This is a great video but if you want a real good one theres a dvd Nash Is a great player but cousy will always Kick ass TOO BAd I CANT FIND HIS JERSEY FOR A REASonABLE PRICE NOT 600
bulldog625 4 years ago
u dont' know wikepedia said bob cousy is recoginzed one of the greatest position i history of the game.basketball is a team process today basketball is totally Dead it's a 1 man show only you know why?simple money, stockton, steve nash and other 90's their all joke they play one man show, cousy won 6 championship a team process not a showy process winning championship is not how great you are or a 1 man show true greatness is how to handle your team how to score your team how to invole ur teamate

Modern point-guards - ESPECIALLY Magic Johnson - owe a ton to this man. He was a genius.
Minatar12 5 years ago 2
He looks funny doing all that stuff. I suppose it was revolutionary for its time, but it doesn't age well.
slkatz 5 years ago
He looks funny doing that stuff? ...doesn't age well? Revolutionary doesn't cut it. He's the father of modern basketball you idiot! Even the Globetrotters are still using his techniques to wow audiences all over the world. They probably don't know where it came from either. Give us a break and go practice your bounce passes.
drsax49 5 years ago 3
Bounce pass? Sorry, I don't have time for basketball. I just got a new hoola hoop. It's neato!
