My first time across the Golden Gate Bridge, I got caught with no cash at the toll booth. It's idiotic that they ONLY accept cash and yet don't warn you about it until you're stopped at the booth; in fact there is no warning at all that there is a toll ahead until it's too late to do anything about it. At the VERY minimum there should be signs along the highway giving you a chance to exit before you reach the booth if you don't have the toll.
I am from Canada, and we do not generally have toll roads. I had literally never seen one before. When I went to visit my friend in Boston, he gave me very detailed instructions, but never mentioned anything about tolls. The map didn't mention toll booths. The highway signs didn't mention toll booths. And by the time it was visible, it was too late to avoid it. This was true of most toll booths I have encountered in the U.S. It seems as if these toll booths are designed with only locals in mind.
@lemonrind BTW, when I confronted my friend about not warning me about toll roads, he said "Of course there's a toll, it's a turnpike!" And I was like "WTF IS A TURNPIKE?!" To this day, I am adamant that "turnpike" is not a real word.
@TVman1981 Not saying anything against you, its just i have seen shows like this where the people do allot of what they're against(chris hansen), But you are my favorite by far because you're like a reporter/ activist
Honestly, local resident should have known the new policy applied but not to out of town drivers. I am from LA and I have no idea they changed the rule until I watched this video. I used to stay in Bar Area 5 years ago when carpool lane was still free. I guess many still assume the same rule. Have Bay Area Gov thought that there might be lack of promotion of the new rule that lead to this problem? I thought that this is not 100% people fault. Again, not only Bay Area driver do use the bridge...
@ray2goo Exactly. The fact that there are so many problems with the toll booths implies some design flaw with the system. While I'm sure locals are upset that people are "doing it wrong", the system should be engineered to handle people encountering this toll for the first time. Clearly there has been some sort of failure in this regard.
I have an EZPass or Fast Pass as some people call it, so I don't worry about money anymore but I have had people back up right in front of me to get into the cash lane and they backed into my truck and the cops were right there. 2 funny but also people need to pay attention
people needs to check their purse and wallet to make shure they have enough before crossing the bridge, other wise, they shouldn't drive his or her own car accross the bridge periode, leave your car in Oakland and take a Bart take a Bus to San Franisco.
They've really messed up the lane assignments and signage on that toll plaza. Some advance warning signs about 1/2 mile east of the toll booths would help, as would some intelligent lane assignments. Oh, and stop assuming that everyone is a local and will get a transponder...
If I have to travel everyday like this to San Fransisco, I would be better of riding the Bart, or take the bus and let the driver of the bus get a Ticket.
This is one of the scariest and most confusing places I've ever driven. Every single time I make it past those booths I can breathe again. I hope you go back in the next couple days and see how people are dealing with the new rates, can anyone get away with cheating in the carpool lane now that they have to stop to pay?
When wheels stop turning, traffic control has failed. It is silly to stop people at a bridge to collect money, it fouls up the flow just where you want it not to stop.
@springhill1958 What I hate are those stupid metering lights on freeway on-ramps. What submoronic cretin thought THOSE things do any good? Speed up traffic by stopping it?
@lemonrind I hear ya...only in California. I love my state, but when idiots elect idiots who appoint idiots that put idiotic things like those lights on freeway on-ramps, well...
They blow money on crap like soundwalls, metering lights, light rail, and all this other junk you only see in Crapifornia while they sit and watch the freeways themselves crumble. Let's put 4 new tires and a paint job on a car whose engine's ready for the junk heap.
I was actually just wondering. If they give the opportunity for people to turn away, then great. I don't travel there, so for all I knew, the toll would be displayed over the toll booth, meaning it would be too late to turn back. If it's displayed way ahead of time, then that's good.
@jrinck I can't speak for this toll booth, but I know from experience that many American toll booths are designed so that once you learn of the toll booth, it's too late to avoid them. It's like the system is designed to trap out-of-town drivers, which of course leads to problems at the toll booth.
If the price changes is dynamic, meaning you don't know the price until you get there, will they have a way for people to "opt out" and turn around? Or is this a guaranteed monopoly where they can charge what they want because people don't have recourse? I expect this to be challenged in court in some fashion.
@jrinck If it's anything like the toll lanes in Orange County, you will know the toll before you have an opportunity to enter those lanes. They are displayed on electronic signs.
@jrinck That is being proposed for a toll road, not bridge. With the toll road, you could simply opt to stay in the slower moving "normal" lanes. They would never do dynamic pricing on bridges for the reasons you bring up.
Just stick a giant, empty CHP car next to the toll plaza and see if drivers will act this dumb. Even though ppl will know its fake eventually, it's a good reminder to pay attention.
How can Stanley Roberts capture so many violations at the toll plaza and the CHP cant? People would be more cautious in picking their (clearly marked) lanes if the Highway Patrol ticketed more often for the apparent violations. Oh, and that white Lexus, He could surely afford a fastrak. Dumb.
@hirosfca Should foreign tourists get "fastrack"? Should people who will use this toll booth once in their lives get "fastrack"? How are people even expected to know what "fasktrack" is when they first encounter a toll booth? You can't assume that everyone is a local when designing roads.
@lemonrind If you don't know what a fastrak is, maybe you shouldn't be in the lane that says fastrak only? I was in Colorado not too long ago, I came up on a toll plaza, the lane said, e-toll only and another lane said e-toll and cash. I didn't know what e-toll was but I knew that I did not have one. So I went onto the Cash lane. If you don't know what it is, you probably don't have it. Maybe you should pay attention to the signs and use common sense?
@hirosfca I did avoid the fastrack lane, but I am speaking more broadly. With 20 years of driving experience, I had never encountered a toll before, because tolls do not exist in Canada. There was no advanced warning of a toll, and the cost was posted on very tiny signs at the booth. I did manage to pay the toll, but it was sheer luck that I had just been to the currency exchange. I am an engineer myself, and systems like toll plazas need to be designed to be intuitive to new users.
@hirosfca You didn't know what e-toll was, but you already had experience with fastrack and toll plazas. Try to put yourself in the shoes of drivers who have not encountered a toll plaza before. The first time I did, I thought "fastrack" might be for credit card payment or something. I honstly had no clue, and the signs were of little help. Luckily, I had cash, so I used the cash lane, but it is easy to see how unfriendly the system is to new users.
they need to have dividers on every single lane, once your in one you cant get out, you have to go through. and if there is a car behind you, well then your SOL. and as JV says "Stanley Roberts will Narc you out"
Removed the damn Toll thing altogether, it fix the problem.

CHP needs to have retard charge. There are just too many whoo-hoo drivers out there. or is it just the CA license that's to easy to get?
