how do you do it

Exactly the same way as Ace Frehley...A pyrotechnic smoke cartridge and some electronics. The only difference is mine works on 2 AAA batteries because I used blue LED's instead of a halogen lamp.

I am surprised that you didn't put the switch on the bridge tone knob as Ace does it

Actually it is on the neck tone knob, the small toggle switch is actually just a safety interlock as it has been used at gigs where the public can get access too easily.
