Shawn: Last year I got into the Stack and Tilt and it did not help my game. It caused me to reduce my shoulder turn and get too flat on the back swing as they teach that the shaft should bi-sect the right upper arm (right handed player). I have some reduced mobility in my left hip. What can help to get a better turn? Is lifting the left heel OK ? Thanks
@muelsok First, a couple of videos for you as this is a very important subject; "golf pro lesson takeaway and starting the swing" as well as part 2 and 3; also, my new video called "golf pro lesson tomahawk the club!" has a nice addition to the takeaway; please post this issue on my forum as well as we will have a great discussion with it!
It seems body type has an effect on keeping the arms in front of the body and distance standing from the ball. I am 5-9, 205, pretty strong, and was a football and track athlete in college. It seems that to keep my arms in front of my body I have to stand a little farther from the ball to free up my arms or else I get jammed up. When I get jammed up I believe I am coming over the top causing slices and pull hooks. Would that be correct to stand a little further from the ball.
@hooptime Be careful with this; please see "golf pro lesson distance to ball part 2" and "golf pro lesson ridiculously easy" part 1 and 2, "golf pro lesson how to focus" part 1 and 2; and check out my forum which has been a great resource for issues like this; Shawn
i have a problem w/ a pupil. He's got a neutral grip but in the transition he shuts the clubface promoting a ton of problems in the downswing and at impact. what are the best drills to help him to keep the club face square through the swing and to make it his?
@danic18 Very simple! He is trying to hit the ball and is not swinging to his target! See "golf pro lesson ridiculously easy!" part 1 and 2 as well as "golf pro lesson fishing and golf"; Shawn
hey man wonderful wonderful stuff. i love this game i just started playing about 2 years ago. It seems like my swing is forever changing and it gets really frustrating. i used to slice the ball really really bad. i worked on my grip and swinging more inside out and after one year shot the best round of my life at an 82 on a very hard golf course. now as you may of guest i hook the ball really bad. i am having trouble getting my club face square to the ball at impact......and ideas thanks jon
Now that you have seen both sides of the coin, it is time to give the control away to gravity and centrifugal force; see "golf pro lesson timing and tempo update" and "golf pro lesson perpetual motion drill" then use the "golf pro lesson tilted spiral" part 1, 2 and 3 to bring your expansive swing together around a steady tilted axis; Shawn
You saw the fine print right? I make 10% of your golf earnings! Just send the check to the address on the contact page of my website! :) Keep up the great play BTW!
Hey Shawn, really enjoy all of your videos! I still feel like I don't really stack up well on my left leg at the end of the swing. My right foot swings out down the line a lot and I don't get that tall firm leg look like I see you and a lot of pros get. Can it be because I'm a heavier guy? Any stretches I can do to fix this? How is the left hip/grown/thigh supposed to feel at the end of the swing? Are you pulling up into the hip? thanks!
You will have your answers in the "Golf Pro lesson one leg swing" and the "Golf Pro lesson uphill, downhill, sidehill" with the emphasis on the downhill shot which will get you the right feel on the brace; then see "golf pro lesson ball bearings and sockets" and "downswing weightshift" to set it up; my DVD would be an asset too of course! :) Shawn
Hello there Shawn, I need some help. I make a solid backswing, but on the way down, I get the club moving too much inside. The blade is wide open, and my misses are held off thin shots, typically wiped and move right. I have worked on trying to release the club earlier, however I feel as though I simply release the club harder after impact. Do you have any comments on have to fix this ailment.
hey lhsgolf; sorry I did not catch you earlier! The video you want to watch is the "Golf pro lesson weak grip or strong grip?" where you will see the difference in body language between someone who has an open face coming into impact vs a closed face; it is night and day and will shed much light! Shawn
Also, I remember reading Hogan's book about the arms being tied together like you mention in this video, and just yesterday I was watching a Jim McLean video and he went on to talk about how Hogan doesn't even do that and it was just an idea at the time he wrote the book? I found it interesting :) Anyway, thanks again!!
Hey Bukemdano! Thanks for the great comments and question!
What Hogan felt and what he perceived may have been misinterpreted by him as he was not a teacher by trade; then the can of worms opens even more when other teachers try to interpret what he did and say he did; this is why a fundamental understanding of the human body's anatomy is imperative to dispel the myths from fact; first question is how do the arms hang from your body and how will gravity affect them during the swing? Continued
Hi Shawn... I LOVE the videos and thank you for taking the time to put them together and post them. I look forward to getting your DVD. I have a quick question about the elbows at address. At address, do you point the back of elbows towards the outside of your hips. Almost like of your were putting both your arms under a box to lift it up with the forearms facing outward.
Have a look at my "arm Motion" and "Elbow Close?" videos and you will also see a unit in my "Training Aids' video as well; all are on the "You Tube Shawn" page of my website;
Shawn - Seen another explanation on YouTube that might help those like me who didn't grasp this. Steve Bishop explains it as tossing the whole club back, not just the head. It keeps the right arm straighter, stopping it from folding excessively, and falling behind me, and now I notice the pros don't have anywhere near as much right arm bend as I did. Tiger's doesn't bend until the left arm is horizontal! Not saying you didn't explain it well, but sometimes it helps to get a different analogy!
This is for golfers who are having a hard time getting the club up high enough for them to get them to fall through the ball and towards the target...If the arms are too low, then the tendency id to hit thin and right or to overcompensate and come over the top and go low left...Have a look at the "Golf Pro Lesson Arms Falling" video to get the rest of this one and you will see what I mean...Shawn
Yes, Thanks! Here he is trying to draw the ball in and pushes to the right...he was a bit low...if you have one where he is hitting a fade you will see a difference; his takeaway was pretty good though and this is an area that improves a lot for most golfers who are too flat when they try this analogy.
designpunk, you are not missing a thing. You're right on the money. However, when looking at another's golf swing, like Tiger's, you will see an illusion of the arms and body separating during the backswing--pay no mind to this. As long as you keep your arms and hands in front of you, your ball striking will be sound as long as you maintain proper balance throughout your swing.
Shawn you ROCK! That analogy of the 2X4s is just what I have been looking for!! I have been struggling with where my arms are supposed to be throughout the swing and this has just been one of those moments where the light just clicked!
good morning from germany and thanks for your response. have to check the vid again. cant get a connection to the swing an the 2x4. maybe i missed the point in there. have a nice evening!
At 1.54 you say your club is on plane. Is there a way to visually check that without using a video camera?. The problem I sometimes have is that my right wrist bends too far back and the club goes off plane.
Shawn, a good drill to add to series is the ball between the arms. All you need is ball--like a soccer ball, dodge ball, or a beach ball. Place the ball between your arms as you swing your club and your on your way to keeping those arms in front of you.
Yes, good one! I have that ball you see Leadbetter using and use it on occasion for some students; the issue there is that it is hard to translate to the full swing; great for the takeaway though! Shawn
You're absolutely right about this. This morning, I imagined having a couple of two-by-fours on my shoulders while swinging my clubs. I was able to keep my arms in front of me with pure contact on the golf balls throughout each swing. This swing thought seems work well for me with another swing thought of turning everything together with my belly button--after starting my swing with a little forward press.
Just one question. I was loosing my rhythm when I knew I had a score going so my swing on the last few holes wasn't as good, do you do the take away first then turn? I found I was picking the club up too early while also turning too early to the position you showed on your vid. Thanks again for your great tips, this video is probably the best I've seen.
No Problem; what you need to understand is that the arms should already be tracking gravity and the body already in the process of getting out of the way; see "golf pro lesson perpetual motion drill" and "golf pro lesson timing and tempo update"; Thanks for the great comment! Shawn
This is one of your best videos.
Another classic easy to understand lesson. Thanks.

Am I missing something here? The 2x4 concept only works to the 3/4 swing point surely?
Tiger is certainly outside the 2x4s look:
Or am I missing a key point?

Sure! They are pieces of wood that measure 2 inches thick by 4 inches wide and x inches long; hence the term 2X4;

Shawn, a very good video on a big problem for many ! Does Taut arms also cure the inside movement of the arms?

Yes, but as long as you toss them wide into the backswing using the turn of the body and using inertia to keep them taut; Thanks for the comment!
