i was on the island side when that storm came in and put the ship into the bridge, they were some long nights offloading ferries and helos.knot too much fun
i went fishing on that bridge I never knew it needed such repair wow. I live all the way in new york and im vary familiar with that bridge please replace it or fix it
they are just going to wait for it to collapse is all. my dad is a diver and has inspected that bridge down deep and there are sections of pilings just toatally missing, and thats scary to know considering the strong currents that run through that inlet...
Thank you for making this video. I live on Hatteras Island and did so in 1991 when the bridge broke. We did not have power for alomost 2 month. It took 4 hours to get to Nags Head. We have no hospital on the island and nor did NH at that time. There is NO REASON not to replace it but we have enviroMETAL groups to thank. The same who prevent protecting ourselves from erosion and close the beaches down for birds. Thank you for the video.
i finnaly got the rest of my family to watch it and it got them to realize how bad of a position the obx is in right now without a replacement bridge awsome job yall
Way to go, Mrs. Duke and the First Flight High School Civics Class! What a wonderful way to get the word out about the need to replace the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge. I totally agree! This was a really "Cool" integration of current events and technology! :-)
Wow You Guys Did An Amazing Job...I Was 5 When The Bridge Was Hit And I Remember Just How Crazy It Was Not Having Any Access To The Outside World. Hopefully This Will Open Other Peoples Eyes!!! REPLACE THE BRIDGE NOW!
Congratulations on your excellent lobbying effort and civic activism. We were sorry to lose Ms. Duke when she left Cape Hatteras Secondary for FFHS - she is a master teacher and was an esteemed colleague. I will share your production with my honors civics class. All us "Hurricanes" salute you!
Excellent video..I rated it a "5" and, I agree, let's get the bridge built NOW!
However, I have a question. Com. Burrus and others say that as much as 25-30% of our tourism revenues come from Hatteras Island; yet your video says that 40,000 people are there in the summer (out of an estmated 250,000+) in peak season. Is this saying that the big spenders only go to Hatteras; because the numbers don't jive. How can 1/6 of our visitors spend 25-30% of the monies? Just curious, Allen?
On January 7, 2008 we confirmed through the Dare County Information Officer that Hatteras Island has 4,500 year round residents and the population can grow as high as 40,000 during the summer months. I am glad you like the video!
I really did like the video; and I wasn't doubting your figures one bit. What I was saying is that your figures reinforce my long held opinion that some folks over-state Hatteras Island's contribution to the overall economy of Dare County. This is not a putdown of the island, as most folks know that our local politicans use figures the way they want to in order to push their agenda.
I CANNOT view this video without it bringing me to tears! The young citizens/students that created it "get it" better than the decision makers involved in the process to date. Make no mistake, the debacle of the bridge replacement has led to a serious threat to public safety. SHAME on all that have used this issue for advancement of their own special interests by risking the lives of all of those that MUST use the bridge to access Hatteras Island. WAY TO GO KIDS!

Enraging. I vacation there every year. Your government believes you are not as important as birds.
Your tax dollars at work.
squashpup 3 years ago
chose not to live there. I know it sucks
novasco55 3 years ago
Problem is, the funding has been approved. Environmental groups are holding up the work, because no solution ever satisfies them.
If people choose not to live there, then environmental extremism wins.
Build the damn bridge already.
squashpup 3 years ago
@squashpup There would be no tourism if it were not for the environment there, and yes I have lived in the OBX.
