And when he comes back in, he knocks over a lamp at 2:16.
He was being a child yet he accused Tomlin of behaving like one.
I really liked how he got mad. She probably would've kept just grinding away at him endlessly if he hadn't. Sometimes it's okay to get that mad if people insist on being difficult when a job needs to get done. She probably didn't pull that anymore.

In another post, I listed the time signatures of 4 acts of violence, 2 of which could have injured people. First, things went flying from the desk to that woman's face. If he had a PERSONAL issue with Tomlin, pull her aside and have it out. His actions would get most people fired and Security called.

George Clooney said he's a genius but his people skills are lacking. Russel challenged Clooney to hit him, and went for the throat, and Clooney fought back. The sound guy may not have recorded it. The sound is coming live from the mic straight through the sound recordist's equipment (called E-E) and into the video assist rig where it was recorded with the video assist's tap picture - which is what we are seeing (hence the poorer picture quality). The video op should record EVERYTHING (especially if it came to blows, and the tape was needed as evidence.... just a thought).

I guess she was trying to give Tomlin and Russell the opportunity to have it out one-on-one without interference from anyone else.
She planned that from beginning. If I were a director, there is no way in hell I would ever work with her. Anyone can see that she was trying to get to him. Very unprofessional. Just think what would you do if you were trying to direct and she talked to you that way. " to many changes" " i can't understand you, and it is not the first time" Com'on this was a set up.
And what about treating his crew like shit on Three Kings filming , where Clooney said it was the worst experience of his career , and when he headlocked Nolan at a party ? Did they also deserved to be treated like shit ?
To be fair, Tomlin isn't exactly following her own advice about "setting a standard" for the crew very well either, treating Russell in a condescending manner until he finally blows a fuse.
This is a situation where both parties - actress and director - should have resolved their differences less explosively, and trying to make one or the other look like the bad guy is a pointless exercise.

@PoffFtw - That's not what happened. She wasn't getting direction. She had no idea what to do in any given seen because he has no people skills and cannot explain himself. Russell has almost all but ruined his rep in Hollywood. Tomlin has been around for decades before this guy, and will be around longer than him. - Look up the problems Russell has had in almost all his movies. That might change your mind about Lily.

The crew left because (you can hear in the background) the assistant director calls for everyone to leave the set (that's when Schwartzman turns around and then leaves). I guess she was trying to give Tomlin and Russell the opportunity to have it out one-on-one without interference from anyone else.

To be fair, Tomlin isn't exactly following her own advice about "setting a standard" for the crew very well either, treating Russell in a condescending manner until he finally blows a fuse.
This is a situation where both parties - actress and director - should have resolved their differences less explosively, and trying to make one or the other look like the bad guy is a pointless exercise.

But! David is the director, he's the person who's bringing this whole movie together. If there is ANYONE in this production who needs to keep it together, it's the director! The way he acted here was terrible and completely unreasonable. She may be a bitch, but this was NOT the solution to the problem.

The things he said were out of line in any context. It's raw disrespect to another human, and specifically degrading a woman.
Also disturbing is his physical violence. I would have stepped in when he got close to her, I don't care if I lost my job. If they want to argue, they can argue, but he was close to a physical attack. He was on a very low-level of mental functioning, akin to an animal.
