i saw this race live on TV and it still shocks me now. For want of a pint of gas Papis lost, the worst sporting kick in the stomach ever. Montoya nearly snatched it from Kanaan at the flag. What a race, what a series, the sheer speed is insane. Papis went on to win the next race after his friend Greg Moore died.
Ben Edwards and Jeremy Shaw are the best commentators after Murray Walker, bring 'em on to F1.
amazing commentary. we need this kind of commentary for irl now, not boring ass jack arute and scott goodyear. the guys we have now have 0 excitement. sell the series, get people excited about a pass, about the drivers, about the series in general. there's none of that now. commentary now is boring as shit.
Yeh! I think you're correct. These are tubo-charged Honda's from what I can tell (CART) and not normally aspirated like they use in the IRL Even at 7:35 the logo in the lower left hand corner identifies this race as the CART US 500. Not the IRL. My heart has always been with the legitimate legacy and lineage to the real history of open wheel racing that was CART - not the IRL. Tony George sucks for what he did to open wheel racing with his power play.
Nossa Que saudade das US500 e ou 500 milhas de Michigan , 250 voltas no Michigan International Speedway com os Reynards Lolas e claro Montoya,Andretti,Franchitti,Moore,Helio,De Ferran saudade da CART
Papis really deserved it, but TK did too. I was at that race as a 5 year old and i met him before the race, and he told me to meet him before every race so he could win. He's a really great guy.
what a shame how these guys raced in front of empty stands week in and week out. they had the best equipment and the best drivers, and some of the best racing ever was not on tv at all or seen by very few...
Aww, I still remember that disappointment in Papis' himself and his crew. I'm a Montoya fan, and I wish the finish line had been a couple of yards further; it'd been a different story anyway.
A common, The da Matta Year's wasn't that bad , they just needed a bit more driver and a new chassis to replace the Reynard, what they don't get in 2003...
that is true but the road course racing and street racing the irl puts on is not of a very good standed. ill say what i always say reunite the series and every one is happy i dont know why people dont want this to happen.
The reunification of open wheel racing in the US might just happen... They may have finally figured out they have a common enemy that is killing them... and that enemy is NASCAR.
(Both Hornish and Franchitti are rookies in Sprint Cup now)
Kanaan was there, prepared, fast and came back from a lap down - I remember that race well - I worked for the team! Nothing went right for us that weekend until the last lap!
Unbelievable finish there Max Papis does everything right dominates the race but a small mistake by team rahal by going down on the fuel a bit too much by half a gallon costs him his 1st win. Kannan did a great race coming back from a lap down to win but he cut it bloody fine
Yes handford and push to pass suck. But Handford was used to slow the cars down, they'd been doing 250+ without them. The push to pass is only there becuase they no longer have an overflow button. The overflow maxed out the fuel in the engine and was used when passing someone. Push to pass is an increase in turbo boost. The part i hate about push to pass is the time limit which makes it hokey. I wish they'd just use the overflow instead as it's a compromise, pass someone but waste fuel.
CART at the time had superspeedways, short ovals, temporary and permanent road circuits so it's not like they were going left all the time. The IRL was ovals only until last year so why critique CART/Champcar going on ovals and not the IRL?
I happen to watch both and am a fan of both (though neither hold a candle to CART in its heyday) so don't think I'm one of those extreme CCFers.
What happens if we don't have the handford rear wing. We could see speeds in excess of 240mph and beyond. Here's my traditional solution (not a technical one), reduce the horsepower slightly and use the old wing setup.

Wrong about Left, Left, Left... IRL has diversity of Roads, Ovals and Streets. CCWS Limits themselves with Roads and Streets because of the DP-01.
