  • @Hogdoglady- Great video! comin at you from the heart of cajun country, Breaux Bridge La.

  • would love to hunt those dogs but i guess i have to relocate cuz europe is just to small for them

  • AmStaff all the way.

  • I had a Catahoula years ago and he was one of the best dogs I ever had...he had a blue merle coat and the classic glass eyes. I had never heard of the breed until I purchased him when I was on a visit to Tennessee. His name was Blue and he was my baby. One thing I noticed about him was he tended to be a one person dog as he would tolerate other people but he was all mine or should I say I was all his...LOL!!

  • I have 4 catahoulas and i just find them so fasinating. I don,t own them they own me. 2 of them come from the greyhound line cause they have the longer thinner nose and 1 of them looks like the red wofk in color and then there is my 11month old who is most definatly the mastive line. Broad think nose and mulit colored brown white and blue merle. And oh my goodnes does he slobber.. Graet dogs will neveer own any other dogs..

  • i think have blood of -carea leones.from spain.

  • What began as the filming of an ordinary day in September of 2001 turns out to be the most complete chronicle of 9/11 attacks. New 9/11 movie on dvd: 'Tuesday Morning in September' 2011 For more information about how to get the dvd, please go to the channel that posted this. (special for veterans and spouses active and reserve - to be found-in radio interviews about the chronicle posted on blog, and facebook) I love Catahoulas; that's my favorite breed.

  • The white man was here long before the lazy redbone . They stole this land they stole my birthright .

  • Love this. Perhaps the best history I have seen thus far for the breed, though I would argue that there's also some French Beauceron in with the rest of the ancestral mix. Beaucerons are/were working farm dogs- and they have the merle/spotted coat and other similar traits to the Catahoula.

First encountered the breed years ago in Alabama, and now I live with Coosa, the Catahoula, who humors me by allowing me to think I own him rather than the other way around

  • I have a catahoula as a "grand-dog"...she's part of the family!..who sings this song. I love it:}

  • Great dogs! Our Porsha is a great Catahoula !

  • I've owned 4 Catahoulas over the past several decades. Although I don't use them on stock, they're wonderful, intelligent, kind and beautiful dogs.

  • Great video. Our Catahoula, Darrell, is a wonderful dog and family member. He's friend to all humans and dogs. Critters? Not so much.

  • Absolutely awesome - Just a well put together compilation! Credit to you!

  • The idea that Native Americans bred their dogs with or from red wolves is not supported by recent DNA work. Several recent studies have looked at the remains of prehistoric dogs from American archaeological sites. In fact, these studies indicate that Native Americans brought several lines of already domesticated dogs with them on their journeys from Asia to North America.

  • @greggamma

That maybe so, but - documentation of the explorations of DeSoto, LaSalle and then of Tonti "the iron hand" reported that the native dog of this area looked like the native red wolf and the only difference was that the wolf howled and the native's dog barked.

  • @hogdoglady I'm going with greggamma's wikipedia quote on this one. Making an argument based on phenotype is very old school. Today's gold standard is DNA testing. Wolves are a different species than dogs for a good reason... in the wild, wolves and dogs will not inter breed. The modern breeding of these animals we see today is artificial. This sort of thing wouldn't happen without human intervention. The more likely scenario would be that the wolves would kill and eat the dogs.

  • @AllknowingGuitarGuru How silly and short sighted. Dogs ARE Wolves. ALL dogs.

  • @Catahoulabarn ALL Dogs are wolves, really? Where'd you get that tidbit of knowledge the top of a Snapple bottle? So are ALL wolves in turn dogs? And what about coyotes, jackals and foxes? Wolves & domesticated dogs diverged 12k to 40k years ago. While they can be artificially manipulated to interbreed in captivity, they do not do so in the wild You do know that a lion and a tiger can interbreed in captivity, but no one in their right mind would say they are the same species. Read a book friend.

  • @Catahoulabarn cont'd- While there have been some reports of dogs interbreeding with wolves in nature (lone female wolves have bred with domesticated guard dogs), the long term sustainability of the hybrid offspring packs is highly speculative. What you're naïvely hinting at is called sympatric speciation & it's unsupported by the literature on wolves and dogs interbreeding. A more accurate statement would be that they belong to the same genus. Try reading a book, it can't hurt.

  • @AllknowingGuitarGuru Silly, Shortsighted AND sad. Dogs ARE Wolves. ALL Dogs. How sad. But, I'm glad you're keeping busy in your Mothers basement.

  • @Catahoulabarn - Haha... mother's basement.... so poignant, so original and so funny. That's nice... just what I needed a paint chip-eating 49 year old with middle school comebacks. Your IQ is showing grandpa.

  • @AllknowingGuitarGuru So what your saying is; I pretty much hit that one right on the head? K GOTCHYA. Have a nice life.

  • @Catahoulabarn Tired clichès and one-line zingers are the stuff of mental behemoths alright, but try not to dislocate your shoulder patting yourself on the back just yet... I couldn't forgive myself. All I can say about your early onset dementia is that it's a very sad thing, but shame on me, I can't look away... it's as compelling as watching you poop your panties; disgustingly funny stuff.

  • @greggamma What is the source of your information? "Studies indicate"? What "archeological sites"? If the "studies" didn't look at the remains of the applicable prehistoric domesticated dogs from the Catahoula Lake area, then any conclusion they draw are tenuous at best. concerning those specific dogs and thus the origins of the Catahoula Leopard Dog.

  • Thanks for sharing your video. I have been a Catahoula guy for over 20 years out here in N. Calif. Back when the only people that had a Catahoula were us hog hunters and a few cowboys. Best dog that ever was. R.I.P. Blue Mtn's Dixie Star.

  • It was near the APPALACHICOLA AREA, headed south into Tampa, that I was first introduced to this 'exotice' (for a Midwestern gal such as myself) magnificent Catahoula. I passed up several opportunities to be owned by one, becuz I had the Piglet dog with me, and well...there ya go. goal: get me a Catahoula dog...or some simular cur

  • @bleighly

you may get a simular "cur" but only a catahoula is a CATAHOULA. They are truely a one of a kind (of course I am prejudiced!)

  • that was educational i always thought a catahoula was a cross between a pit bull and a coon hound of some sort

  • love the dogs, where can I get a copy of that song?

  • @Lagsorc

It is by the belamy brothers

  • @hogdoglady thank you so much. We live in Florida and recently obtained a catahoula puppy so i had to find a copy of that song for my son. BTW he loves it. The interest in the Catahoula in the first place is because we just recently adopted a puppy and he is just darling. We are concerned that he can't see very well. However after some research we feel fortunate that he can actually see, if not well at least he isn't blind. Thank you for you your posts. Keep up the good work.

  • Great video, Live up in Pa and have a 10 year old Catahoula named Ebeneezer, He is a great buddy.

  • Very nice video and comments!

  • Is this dog a pure hunting dog, nothing for me who doesnt want to hunt with it?

  • These dogs are excellent hunting dogs. and often make and excellent blood trail dog, because most are silent on track and only bark or bay when whatever they are hunting for is found.

  • we have one and we don't hunt. They just like lots of excercise - and play toys. (No play toys, no excercise = eat your house) We have 3 little kids and she is sooo good with them. They play together - it's amazing what this dog puts up with from the kids.

  • they dont really look like a mastiff or a red wolf at all they look more like a hound dog crossed with some kind of herding dog, which would match up with their temperament a bit more .

  • The often get the influence of size from the mastiff, some may weigh in at about 100 lbs, the influence of the red wolf is the red color of some. There may be some hound in there somewhere down the line, but when you are around a catahoula you will see that portion of their make up very minimal. Ours howl like a pack of wolves and they often drink like a wolf, they have many mannrierisms like the wolf as well.

  • I love me a Catahoula! Best damn hog dog I've ever seen! lol

    REMIX!

but for real Catahoula Hounds are the best Hog dog there is the are quick on their feet!

  • great stuff, thanks yall. i've got a catahoula (maybe a mix..) that looks alot like the left most dog at 2:41. his eyes are not glassed or blue but are brown. in anyones experience is that common?

  • Brown eyes are just as common as blue. Just as the colors go from black to light and everythng in between. Good luck with yours.

  • Great video and history. I've had Catahoulas for the 10 years (currently have 3 females), and it's funny to hear everyone give their comments on the origin of the breed, or how I must have Catahoula mixes, since there is such a size difference between my 3. I've learned to just nod my head, and keep my mouth shut. Ironically, my one NALC registered dog is the one that is accused of being a mix most often.

  • I've had 4 catahoulas over the years (currently have a spayed female). They're wonderful dogs - great family dogs. She's very dominant with my other dogs, but great with the other animals. She actually herds my chickens.

  • Who is the song by?! That is fantastic!

  • It is Catahoula by the belamy brothers and yes it is great

  • We raise them R DIAMOND CATAHOULAS,Awesome dogs ,smarter then

most. Not for the first time dog owner!

  • Yes, they can be a handful. I hate to say this, but i have found sometimes they are smarter than their owner. Then you really run into problems. HA!

  • VERY TRUE! Just trying to be polite!

  • My catahoula died.... i was coming home from school and she was dead on the drive way...she hadnt been sick so we suspect it was either a car or a venomous snake.

  • I am sorry to hear that, My catahoula died too. He was a puppy and somebody throw so poison meat around my house and some of my neighbors houses.

  • sorry to here about your dog. Mine is still alive and well, only a year old and is waaaay to hyper. I would be upset if I lost my puppy.

  • Thanks so much for this video! I have my first Catahoula, Carley, 3 mo. old now, and she is a dream! A little hard-headed but such a joy!

  • @sotpagrl I have had one for about 4 years now, and I have never had a better dog. I found her in the woods, and I didn't even know what kind of dog she was. I had to do some research as i had never heard of this breed. I imagine she is a mix of Catahoula and something else, but her blue leopard Merle coat and features are undoubtedly those of a Catahoula. It was no work at all to house break her, and she is very loyal and protective of her family.

  • love the vid love catahoulas love beer. and again love the vid thnx

  • A lot of people think just because they are mearled (we call is leopard) and glass eyes that its Ausie, you could possibly have a Cat or Cat mix. Send me a picture and I can probably verify.

  • I want to send you a picture!

  • whats the song named thats playin

  • I have a mutt named Hailie that I was told was an Australian Shepard mix but lately I've started to think that she's Catahoula mix. This video only furthers my suspictions. She looks a lot like one just smaller.. and her behaviour sounds more like a Catahoula than shepard. I thought bout getting a DNA test but most of them do not include Catahoula's in their DNA database.. so it would kinda defeat the purpose if that's what she prodominantly is.

  • Great Video! I had never heard of a Catahoula until 6 years ago when my brother found a Puppy at the local humane society. He brought him to my house to show him off, and he took to me and didn't want to leave. He's been my best friend and every day companion ever since.

  • i have three of these dogs!!! amazing dogs!

  • Very interesting.

  • My catahoula - Gold Star Britches will be featured on Animal Planet 101. We spent last week filming in New York City. The filming crew was amazed on how well Britches listened and was able to finish ahead of schedule. Britches caught alot attention as he walk down 5th Avenue. I knew he would turn heads after they seen him in action. One smart animal! Your video is presented very well- Great job!

  • That's great! A lot of "dog" people are impressed with the intellegence of a Catahoula. Smart - yet self thinkers, you often have to be smarter than they are - ha! The looks of the Catahoula is also impressive, our dogs too have been used to promote the dog food we usewith nat. ad campaigns. Good Luck! Let me know whento see you on TV.

  • Hey, that's great! I was wondering when or if they'd feature 'houlas on it. When's the air date? I'll make sure out two 'houlas, Maddi & Cricket watch it!

And what a great song with this video!

  • That was so neat! :) I have a Catahoula/Basenji mix, and she is awesome! Smartest dog we've ever had!

  • The catahoula is known for the dedication and loyal service. Unlike many working breeds there is no reason you can't have a great family pet and an awesum hunting companion. Good Luck with your catahoulas.

  • i have the most beautiful two beautiful cathoula pups. Theyre purebred and the best personality.

You yell there names (memphis and Rripper) and they just chase you behind following you everywere you go.

its only a simple whistle and there by your side.

theyre goign to be hunting dogs but a great alround kind dog.

  • who sings that song

  • The name is of course "Catahoula:" Sung by the Belamy Brothers

  • I also have a Catahoula/Aussie mix. He is not as agile as my female but an awsome hunting dog. He is a great tracker and a good bird dog.

  • I have a Catahoula/Pitt-bull female that is awsome. She does a little bit of heeling when I need my horses to come in and she will run the heels off anything that is stupid enough to run away. Ovearll a very imposing dog but really cool if you know her

  • They are NOT the dog for everyone!!!! But the best if you know what to do and what to expect. Under the correct owner and training there is no better.

  • I've got two beautiful Catahoulas and my last dog was part Catahoula.

I don't think I could ever go back to another dog (except perhaps a Tundra Wolf/German Shepard that I grew up with as a baby.)

Wonderful dogs, lazy now that they don't have a job (no more agility for them.) I totally don't recommend them for everyone though. People end up getting them and giving them away since they are so stubborn.

You MUST know how to handle them or they will walk over you. XD

  • Catahoulas rock!

  • Loved your video and the song!!

  • a very nice breed but i think a but to much dog for european use

  • my dog is MR.T he is solid red,red nose, red mouth...and he has a mohawk up his lower neck unto his head. whats up with that? let me know+ he is 6 months old and weighs 55 pounds or more and is bigger than his mother and tall increadible dog .

  • Ive been thinking of getting a Catahoula pup myself, cool dogs, I like all kinds of curs and Plott hounds too. Which color of Catahoula do you recommend for the lack health problems? Because I heard the white and merel types wth glass eyes ttend to have eye, ear,and have bad hips.

  • One of the neatest things about breeding Catahoulas color. You never really know what you are going to get. They range in color from black to mostly white. Which is the ones you have to be careful about. A lot of white on the head can be a hint of problems. So be careful when chosing a pup. You will also want to know the hips, a pen Hip or OFA cert. is good, we test ours thorugh working. If they can work solid, in the demanding conditions that we expect, then we will breed.

  • Ok thank you very much. Also do they make good dogs for say, pheasant or goose?

  • Thank you, we are very proud of our heritage and of course our dogs.

  • Your dogs are great

  • hey great video, very informative, i have 2 11 week old catahoula sisters, let me tell you they are a HANDFUL!! if any of you catahoula owners have some good tips for fun excercises and training please let me know!

oh and by the way, they are the most loving, loyal, smart and strong willed dogs i have ever met!

  • It seems you have their temperment down pat. You correct in strong willed and strong minded. You will find they are thinkers and will fingure out many things own their own. Such as how to escape. So be cautioned. The best advice I can give, is this - give them a job. Take them you as much as possible to be well socialized. As they age, careful of Alpha dog, you may run into some power struggles, especially with 2 females. Feel free to contact me any time for any help. Good luck & Thanks

  • Very nicely done! There is no going back to another breed once you have a Catahoula. My husband gave me on for an aniversary gift 7 years ago. Like fine wine this dog just gets better with age. Love the song!

  • This video is awesome. Loved it, and proud owner of my first catahoula. Do't think I will ever own any other breed. My Jessie is an amazing dog. But she is a definie handful. Thanks again, and I'm sending this video to myspace.

  • I'm so glad that you enjoyed the movie, thank you for the response. The breed itself, while a handful, like you said, they are the best as far as I am concerned and only get better with age.

  • my catahoula "wyatt"...seems to have some bulldog in him.. broader chest..but still has the glass eyes/curved tail/webbed feet/ etc..did they breed bulldogs into them?..he is much thicker..but still does all the same stuff...will let a small child lay on him.. but kills coons/hare/feral cats etc...great dog

  • Thanks for doing this video!! Also love the song that you used for it. Gotta love the catahoula!

  • You're welcome! It was a labor of love - of the breed and our heritage. I am a fourth generation catahoula owner/breeder. While a wonderful dog, they have to go to the "right" owner. Those are the one's that truely appreciate the breed itself. Once again, your very welcome.

  • I love Catahoulas. Mine went missing about 2 weeks ago, he was a great dog.

    what is the song called?

  • It is called "Catahoula" by the Belamy Brothers. As you maybe aware these dogs are called "the indian dog the cowboys adopted" well our tribe is from some of those indians. I did this as a presentation to our tribal children and decided to share. I'm glad you like it.

  • wonderfly done!

  • nice history!

  • Terrific!! Such wonderful dogs, and yet so many people haven't even heard of them--my first Catahoula is about 5 yrs old now -- great personality!
