  • fuck the fucking dislike u mother fucker , this is awesome

  • Crowd are like they're at a boxing match and egging Mark on to perform. the man is a GOD! - My family are from the IOW and my auntie knew Mark years ago. Years past and I aspired to be anything like as good as him. brilliant!

  • you can tell he likes stanley clarke!

  • Happy Days, I remember seeing Level 42 at the Zero 6 in the early 80's. Hot Water Bass solo was nothing short of epic.

  • Yes loved the zero 6 gig end of june 1981. Brilliant stuff

  • but can he play smoke on the water...

  • I was there too as always. A brilliant gig as always

    Southend Pete

  • He's GREAT!! And also he is a fusion of Anthony Hopkins and Hutger Hauer, ehehehehe...

  • @WellMefisto or even Simon Baker of The Mentalist/The Guardian/Devil Wears Prada....??? He's a gorgeous human being and I've loved him for a long time...... His Bass playing sends shivers down my spine.....

  • for the one who disliked this go do the world a favor ,and end yourself!

  • My god you are so good I can hear the hairs pricking up on your neck

  • Even chuck Norris gave up bass when he heard this. . .

  • Beautiful!

  • How does he record and repeat what he's playing?

  • @188metalhead881 loop pedal my friend

  • @mexicodriver Thanks.

  • Fuc"king" awazing!!!!!!!

  • The Mother of all Slap Bass solos!!!!!!!!!!!

  • WHo wuz the one ass hole who disliked this video

  • so please that 41,562 people have witnessed this.....:)

  • Excellent bootleg

  • impressive...he is really great. never saw another bass player who had a groove and a style like this...its amazing! thanks for uploading the video dude =)

  • love the start of this video very nice mellow sound with chorus mark u rock!!!!!!!!!

  • This is fantastic! Glad I found this on youtube. When I used to play bass guitar, this was the song I always played, warming up. GREAT! (I play Double Bass nowadays)

    Thanks a lot!

  • First time I've seen Mark use a looping device. Nothing wrong with adding this to his solos but I prefer just the 4 strings, not 16 as Freakcent mentioned.

He is a master at slapping but few note his great melodic harmonics.

Anyone know what bass he's using? Nice looking top. English Elm perhaps?

  • @beemer4me4u Probably Status He plays Alembic too but this doesnt look like one. He has an arsenal Go 2 Alembic website and check out his sig bass Stanley Clarke has beautiful sig as well. Ive been a Stan freak for 40 years Got to jam with him once in Dallas. Pretty cool. But Mark can hang with anyone I would say the top 5 bassist, especially for slap would be Stan Clarke, Vic Wooten, Mark King, Jonas Helborg and Les Claypool with Flea and Marcus Miller close behind. + Dont 4get Larry Graham!!

  • @beemer4me4u Status Graphite Kingbass Mk2! Great bass!!

  • MK you're still my hero, but please stop the looping stuff. Just let us enjoy a man and his four strings. Not eight or 16, just four.

  • i wish Mark King was my neighbour....

  • F@@@*<g brilliant!!! This is unrivalled genious!!

  • Doon Toon!

  • HALE TO THE KING BABY

  • Wow, there are people here who has never seen a great bassist loop? I saw Jaco Pastorious at the Hollywood Bowl Jazz festival loop Purple Haze, walk away for 5 minutes as it played and then rip it drunk out of his mind. So?

    Nothing wrong with using technology.

  • i've said it before he has still got it

  • Posted on my birthday, thank you!

  • Bits of School Days in there, cool.

  • Takin' it where it ain't been

  • when he stops the bass keeps on going why?

  • @Jonhashas It's called looping my friend.

  • amazing....

  • Damn Mark King is srt8 DOPE man!!!!!!!! I like how he looped his live tracks and didnt over step any of the other tracks! It all flowed perfect! True Master that Mark King!

  • I love Mark King, but one of Level 42's support acts was a bassist who looped stuff and then added to it - Mark said it was rubbish - I guess he's changed his mind

  • @thunderthumbs4242 Ha ha, its the ol' slag em' off then join em' later when you've run out of ideas., how humiliating was that?

  • @thunderthumbs4242

I remember the guy, he was very good, but when did MK say that?

  • road grinder

  • aaaaaaaaaamazingggg

  • paddymac 68

put youre own stuff up on line

    and we will start there

lets see if you can do better

    never mind the 80s shit

    put up or shut up

    lets see it

    i could be wrong

if so i will eat my words

but like the zinn master said we will see

  • great bass 1 one of the top 10

sad the best you can tickets for 25 bucks

the people you can see 200 bucks

and they suck and cant play

  • You come and win...... One day Mark say "...i dont like use a sampler...", no matter....you are de king in every jungle....

  • UMMMMMMM WOW!

  • We can forgive the fact that Mark appears to have let himself go and pilled on the weight recently, for the brilliance in his playing!

  • Sorry, I think this is a bit harsh. I mean, he's in his late forties - have you never heard of middle-age spread? Just listen to those licks, man!!!

May I ask, are you overweight.?

  • I have a rare condition that means I cannot walk past a Greggs without going inside and ordering several pasties! I am pretty good on the bass too though.

  • Mark King is 51 and was never exactly a beanpole. Not many bass players are. The only one that I can think of offhand is Flea

  • Pure self indulgent brilliance, like masterbating or eating an entire toblerone in one sitting.

  • god must have lessons from sir mark king i mean he ivented slap bass playing all on his own praise be to the lord

  • Cool, I've never heard him use a sampler live before...great vid, thanks for sharing! :)

  • Velký kravál pro zblblé publikum. NELÍBÍ SE MI TO. :o/

  • OH MY GOSH!

  • Damm...

  • white LEDs???!@!@

  • It baffled me for years how he kept the backbeat going. Like a twat I always tried to play it in real-time without using a delay unit !

  • Actually, it's very rare that he uses sampling, most of the King stuff you hear is pure King, he plays just that fast. Go watch Mr Pink [Live at the Jazz Cafe] if you dont believe it ;D

  • I will go and look for my jaw.

it must be somewhere here on the floor...

I have been a die-hard fan for 27 years now and he still AMAZES me.

    D'oh!

  • You'll find your jaw. The same thing happens to me everytime I see MK 'karate chops and wing chun' on the bass. My jaw always finds its way back home. God bless MK.

  • Corking bass player, but bloody hell the face he pulls whilst doing it almost puts you off watching! :-D

  • Gaining a couple of pounds are we marky =]

  • its all the ownage he's eating...

    peace

  • oh. my. god. i think i just shat myself

  • Man 1:19 = Amazing!

  • GC79, thanx for this, epic!!! A fan since their formation. Someone here has written of MK's newfound enthusiasm and i must say I've never heard a solo quite like this before - sublime. Victor Wooton, Marcus Miller etc, yup they're all good in their own right but nothing, NOTHINGGGG compares to the pulse and energy and sheer inventiveness of the boy here!!! Mark King - you are still up there on the plinth my son!!!!!!!!!!

  • Yeeees. Just my way of thinking. Thanks to GC79 for posting this video

  • Couldn't agree more, style, innovation, and a rythm like no other bass player.

    Mark King rocks !!!

  • unbelievable!!! Mark is still the KING!!!! There's tons of ultra-mega bass players around...with speedlight technics...but the Mark's groove and sound are another thing!!!

  • I love it that Mark has found this wonderful new enthusiasm for his music and what he really can deliver...like no other. I saw Victor Wooten do a solo using the same repeat sytle. We counted about 16 different layers that Victor laid down. I think Mark wants to show all in the Music biz that he can stand with the best in the music world.

  • well i think he proves it here :) !!!

  • Thunder Thumb jammin' with himself. SWEEEEEET

  • What in the name of all that is holy was THAT?

I play bass in a band at the moment!

Think I'll sell it after watching that.

Mark's playing a completely different instrument from me!

    10/10 son!!!!

  • all i can say is OH MY!!!!!

  • Hi Gemma. Fantastic bass playing by Mark there. I've been a Level 42 fan for years, but have never seen them play live.

Have you seen them live before?

  • Hes great u gotta luv him

  • Excellent stuff - what camera did you use as the picture and the sound are really good, cheers andy

  • Thank you! It's a Pentax Optio Z10.

Thanks to everyone else who has left comments. I'm glad you enjoyed the video.

  • i was there too

  • Those harmonics around the 1 min. mark were sweet! This is one of his better solos that I've seen in awhile....thanks for the post!

  • Many thanks for posting this! I too was fortunate enough to see this awesome solo live. The guys were brilliant and greatly appreciated by the Essex crowd.

  • I was also here to see this...this was the Mark King of 25 years ago. This was a wall of sound which had the audience spellbound. Brilliant.

  • Quite possibly the best I've ever seen.....

  • Thanks for posting this!! Was at gig and has to be one of the best EVER. They seemed happier here than l;ots of the others.Thats cos ESSEX RULES!! ha ha
