I think it changes the meaning of the music, but there's nothing wrong with that at all. Shostakovich's score is rich and elastic enough to accommodate this absolutely thrilling performance. The thing is, Bernstein is a musical Midas -- he turns everything to gold, even if you don't agree with him, you can't deny its worth.

Personally, this performance is too fast. It takes away from the heaviness of the last segment of this movement. Brilliant performance nonetheless.
