bullshit, the vaio z has an optical drive and is even lighter than this, 3.3 pounds, AND it has a 6-cell battery instead of a 4-cell battery. HP is not using space very efficiently somewhere in this notebook.

If not having one bothers you that much, then look at other notebooks out there. I myself maybe only use mine only a handful of times and would love to rather use an external drive.
