  • Wow. That's is cool!!

  • You wanna learn how to hit a forehand like a boss? Look at Federer, no I'm not a fanboy I'm a Rafa fan but Roger has a fuckin sick forehand.

  • Thats odd not much different at all from my swing and ive been playing since the mid 80's

  • either that court is really short or that forehand had some serious topspin on it!!!

  • level:asian

  • Fantastic video! But when hitting the forehand do you lock your wrist during the swing or keep it loose?

  • really nice forehand I appreciated a lot, as I do afternoon muscle training and in the morning two hours heavy tennis training!

  • It is thanls to this technique that, nowadays, we have so many injured players ho cannot handle changes of pace.

  • @enri42 - absolutely not true! The technic is preventing injuries! I am 65 and never injured! It's the big frequency of hard ATP matches which are bringing injuries!

  • Can you some flat ones? I think flat ground strokes are the more modern swing.

  • great video, great presentation, good instruction...keep it up..

  • Absolutely priceless and helpful.

Best explanation that helps many people.

It works for me perfectly. Thanks!!!

  • I honestly don't wanna learn how to hit 'Modern' forehands. I'd rather hit weird-effective ones. Just my opinion, anyway.

  • @ThePVno Forehands are sometimes a puzzle for me. I hit a western and when it was consistently good it had a bit of a Lendl loop to it. For me I have to remember to get somewhat early and get a good body turn into it and swing through. I don't know that I will ever learn the modern forehand but there are still principles that apply to both.

  • @KingCast65 lol. I was just saying. Effectiveness>Show

  • look like Nadal...

  • All totally true and nicely put (whip effect) !

ps. (and of course non-dominant-arm "duty" is important equally : )

  • Really great job mate. Your video made me realise I wasn't using my hips enough. I was experiencing a lack of power in my forehand... Definitely better now.

  • Can you do a video on hitting high forehands? Above shoulder level? Pro's hit this shot really well. Typically, they use this shot when they hit winners. Thanks! (love your videos BTW!)

  • @kreaze20 I made a video of the High Forehand above the shoulder videos but it's on the Premium Site. Thanks for watching!

  • very nice video! I am left-handed, so, I couldn't get you perfectly!

  • hi10spro - are you learning from this?

  • @FedererAmazingClass

No hating but anybody fed up with hi10spro overpopulating ytube search answers? Obviously the guy knows he's not the best (to say the least) but posts videos like crazy...

  • @FedererAmazingClass Are you kidding I watch hi10spro for tips for NOT WHAT TO DO such as posting every single random clip of any random club player complete with geeky analysis with an emphasis and celebration of tennis mediocrity. The guy obviously loves his tennis but has skin as thick as an elephant hide - he censors criticism and blocks commenters all the time whilst continuing to post garbage. To his credit he loves tennis and his vids are good for a laugh.

  • @vohshkab lol. I had a laugh at one of his responder's comment about him sounding like MadTV's Bobby Lee

  • @FedererAmazingClass Either he completely lacks self awareness or doesn't give a shit. I mean if you look at the number of views on some of his vids 10,000 's but you have like five comments a year apart - credit where its due - he has to sift through all those negative comments - must be utterly soul destroying - talk about mental strength - I bet he is harder to beat in a game than he appears. He always runs into the net - you would have thought just lob him ... good luck to him.

  • Thanks, LnR! You've provided the clearest (for me) explanation of the whipping action of the racket on the forehand drive. The locking of the hips was also a very good instructional cue and I can feel, when I practice, how this adds speed to the ball. Great stuff, this and all your videos.

  • Hi!

I have a question about the eastern grip. When I grip it I get the top of my index finger on the sharp edge of bevel #6 and #7 which hurts abit. Do you get a edge on the fingertop or am I holding it wrong? Some coaches said to me that the index finger should have space from the middle finger to avoid bevel edges. Is that correct? I am very confused.

  • The ball was out! :) Very useful video. Thanks a lot!

  • when i do this forehand my tennis told me that i am not doing weigh transfer. So they tell me to take a step forward (left foot) right before the contact to almost a close stance. Is that correct? or they just have bad info. btw great video

  • Ok dude, I'm subscribed..good stuff here

  • Great video! Keep it going...

I have a problem. I'm using the hip rotation but I not getting enough power than my brother, who is not turning his hips fast.. Can you help me?

  • u know i know another tip that will help.... im a 13 year old in the open 16s division and if you hit the ball right next to ur body u get more power... by da way i have the exact same swing except with a lot more spin... :P oh yeah also different grip

  • hi coach, can you make a video of how to receive low slice balls? i got a problem with those low balls, i just keep missing them or if i hit them they just wont go across the net.

  • thanks for making all these tennis videos they really help me a lot!

  • His technique is quite good, and explained the important details

  • I like this guys explanation and the accent is awesome. the serve explanation video is one of the best on youtube.

  • You miss how the left arm movement across the body with a finishing elbow tuck to throw the left shoulder back (and right shoulder forward) defines both the power, core rotation and timing for the shot.

Djoker does this better than anyone, but all the pros do it. Yes, you do it too.

It's like how skaters use their arm movement to define the speed and timing of a spin. The left arm movement defines the axis of core rotation for consistency and power whether hitting open or on the run.

  • A forehand isn't too much rocket science, and you explain it very well - unlike many other coaches, who hit like 4.0 players and swing way to much from the arms.

  • cont.... Over the past days hitting against ball machine I was able to use a heavier racquet because the ‘snap’ from my hips followed by the forehand seems to also give me more strength…big deal due to neck injury from an ejection several years ago during my A10 days. Great instruction! You got the point across! THANKS!

  • I’ve spent a lot of time looking for advice from tennis videos, trying to fine that one ingredient that would improve my forehand. My current tennis instructor explained the modern forehand as, ‘skipping rocks across the water.’ I just didn’t get it. Following your advice, I immediately noticed an improvement with power and speed.

  • does the delay of the racquet also apply to the close stance? ( taking a step into your shot)

  • Love what you are teaching. I've been saying pretty much the same things to my students and they have been taught so differently that they look at me like I have three eyes. If I could say a couple of things on your forehand would be to (1)use the left arm more, like elbowing somebody behind you (2)bring the swinging arm all the way around back to it. In my opinion the left arm is very useful in the modern swing. This will help you go through the ball more with less effort.

  • I am glad I stumbled upon this channel! great instructions, very helpful! Just a quick question Tae, what kind of forehand grip Nishikori uses? My guess is it's either modified eastern or semi.. am i correct?

  • beautiful forehand

  • very helpful thanks!

  • @EvannKnows Your welcome!

  • @lockandrolltennis i used to be able to hit a really ncie forehand then i got my grip all jumbled up. now when i hit my forehand the ball tends to fly just out. but sometimes i can hit really nice powerful shots. its really annoying! how do i ensure that i can maintain hiting the same nice powerful shots all the time?

  • @lockandrolltennis Looks just like novak Lol I want to hit a forehand like this

  • Do you recommend kicking the right leg back a little to add power and avoid pulling across the ball at impact ?

  • @Chipinjack Yes, but mostly on Neutral Stance forehands

  • @Chipinjack Yes, but mostly on Neutral Stance forehands

  • @lockandrolltennis ...Noted...I like a little kick on the open stance too as it helps me extend thru shot as well. Thx for all these vids..hope u post more !

  • good information. ty

  • @SupremeTennis My pleasure

  • @lockandrolltennis hey:) how do u check if ur using the correct grip? as in the grip that u are using?

  • @dancingworms001 Treat the string face like your palm. Put your palm on the string face, then slide it down the shaft, then grip the racquet. That way when you walk around the house shadow swinging(no racquet), act like your palm is the face of the racquet strings.

  • @jsbroussard25 ok tks! that was really helpful! :D

  • You have a very similar FH to me! My FH motion has the same characteristics as yours : Open stance, grip, end of motion, etc. I must say that as my forehand is a big weapon, yours must be very powerful.

  • hey could you look at my video and tell me what you think of my strokes? (forehand and backhand) would like to know if you think i could get more consistent with your technique

  • Answer : Federer relaxes his grip after the shot right away. That's why you can see this twist (you will see it many times when he is hitting). Other guys don't relax it (wrist) right away, that why their rackets continue traveling straight perpendicular to the ground.

  • Is this really a forehand u want to use on every shot? I find myself mainly using it effectively on higher bouncing shots above the waist, not lower balls. Am I correct in assuming it's use?

  • @seldomsceen I do. Just as long as I can get a good knee bend for the lower balls. If it's too low you might have to slice at it. I try to keep the stroke the same as much as I can. I might have to get under it and over it a little more the closer to the net I am, but by keeping this stroke for the most part will also train your feet to move more automatically by focusing on trying to "keep" the stroke.

  • Hi!

I have a question about my forehand and hopefully you could know whats wrong. I changed grip for 2 months ago. From extreme western grip to SW. The problem I have now is that I hit long misses. My racquetface is not open when I hit but it flies long anyway. Is it that I am not used to the grip yet and have to practice more?

What do you think? Thanks for any help! Greats vids BTW.

  • @joltcokeeee No worries, that is a common problem. You most likely have to change the swing pattern. Meaning, with the western grip, you need to swing more "up" since your racquet is more closed. Once you change to a SW grip, your racquet is more open so if you are swinging the same exact way as you did with the W grip, than the shots will fly. You need to compensate the swing pattern for the opening of the racquet face. Correction: Try swinging more "through" the ball instead of "up."

  • @joltcokeeee Try doing this slowly in the beginning so you get used to the different swing pattern. Hope this helps!

  • @joltcokeeee Look at the video at :24-:26 See how the racquet face is over the ball. I call it "covering the ball." You can achieve this result by making sure your fingernails are facing the ground when you follow through right after contact with the ball. This will only take an hour on the ball machine to figure out how to roll the racquet after contact to keep it from going long. Good luck

  • You are the the best instructor I have ever seen so far....Thanks for the tips...

  • @frebonfim wow! really appreciate your compliment! Thanks.

  • the BEST forehand lesson ive seen so far! I have some questions though! Should the power come from the rotation of the hips only, or from the rotation of the torso too? And one more, should i have my arm loose and let it swing only from the power of the rotation or should i put some force in it? Thanks in advance!

  • @odingr Thanks! When your hip rotates, everything follows. It's easier to say hip rotation than torso rotation. ;)

Your arm should rotate from the power of the rotation just like the "monkey drum" movement. Of course, you should still maintain the correct arm swing for your forehand.

  • @lockandrolltennis thanks for you answer! i tried this type of forehand but i have a problem! Its consistency! Keeping the wrist loose makes me hit the ball hard but not consistent! i sometimes hit the ball miles away from the court! how should i fix this? maybe tighten the wrist? plz help! Thanks in advance!

  • @odingr What is your level of play? The wrist snap is an advanced movement. If your forehand fundamental is not solid, I wouldn't recommend the wrist snap. It is difficult to tell you anything too specific without watching you play. If anything, do all the movements SLOWLY.

  • @lockandrolltennis i think im around 3.5 ntpr but im not sure about that. not worse for sure. I will try to send you a video of my forehand. I think the problem is mostly the footwork. I dont seem to set up correctly for the forehand so i tend to be too close to the ball or too far from the ball so i have to stretch. I also have my arm straight as Federer does, not bent. When i bend i think i get more spin but bending the arm makes the racquetface tilt a bit upwards.

  • @odingr I would definitely hold off on the wrist snap until you get other things like footwork in order.

  • straight to the point and vivid explanation. nice vid :)

  • @fiifi2007 Thanks!

  • Good video. Thanks

  • best video yet

  • I use a modified eastern as well.

  • @mcortezzzzzzz It's a good compromise!

  • @lockandrolltennis yeah. whatever works for the player does the job.

  • Great video! Although I Watched Murrays Forehand and how come he doesnt use the lock and roll method but still gets good racket speed? Thank for the Vid!

  • @Modernjuniortennis He does! All the big forehand hitters do it. Watch the racquet delay movement after the hip rotates. Thanks

  • i love your videos. You dont beat around the bush, you get to the main points. Simple to see and to understand.

  • @JimmyPark321 Appreciate the comment. Why waste my words on camera? I prefer short and sweet!

  • You are 100% right. This is called 'reverse body action' re leaving the racquet head behind

  • so colorful.... Red shoes, yellow bright shirt, blue racket, black socks/string..... nice...

  • @majestytd Thanks! Easy to recognize the colors. Like Mcdonalds! =)

  • The exact same, no. HIs Grip, Backswing and how he Closes his racquet before he makes contact with the ball is different. Every player will vary. But the main movements of the legs, hips and shoulders causing a delayed movement in the arm swing is pretty much the same. Hope this helps.

  • Does Novak Djokovic hit the same forehand like in this vid?

  • @ikvon Even 'oldies' like Tommy Haas hit like that. Google 'tommy haas hitting youtube'

  • My pleasure! Good things happen when you let your body do what it's supposed to.

  • This is the best instruction I have ever seem, my forehand got improved after I watched this vedio. thanks Benjamin!!!

  • Forehand speed increased dramatically just by applying the rotate and snap action shown on this video! Thanks for taking the time to make these videos. :)

  • Absolutely!

  • i like your stroke. do you recommend split stepping though? that's what i do before every shot, just to stay on my toes.

  • best coach ever. Guess imma work on my abd muscles.

  • Great instructions. so simple. I love your forehand volley video. I was wondering why I could not control my forehand volley and after viewing your video, I realized that I wasn't using my off hand at all. Once I started following your instruction, I can control my volley.

  • Yes, this technique can be applied in any situation. Hitting off the back foot is just my preference. I also use the neutral stance for when the ball is shorter. On regular forehand rally, I hit with the open stance because I can really rotate my body. Hope this helps.

  • Really good stuff. Love the break down and the useuage of both linear and lateral momentum in your FH.

One Question: In most situations i find that when i am in defensive position I am usually hitting off my back foot (how you are in the video) to generate more top spin, however when i am making aggresive shot i usually transfer my weight to my front foot. Can this technique be applied to any all situations in a rally - defensive/offensive/neutral.

  • Thanks!

  • You're an excellent teacher and obviously a very good player with fantastic strokes. Keep up with the good work!

  • Javier, I'm so happy to hear that my video has helped your forehand! It's these type of comments that inspire me to make more videos!

  • For the past two months, my forehand has been the ailing part of my game. I tried using everything; especially, youtube videos. I came across your video and applied the same techniques you emphasized, WOW! The feel of each shot is priceless. Thank you so much, I will habituate your techniques every time I play.

  • wow that looks like nadal's racquet snap!

  • Thanks Benjamin!

  • Hi coach Tae ! Nice video lol
