Their arguement regarding achieving a healthcare system the equal of Frances (and most other core EU states) by saying they need MORE competition. These countries have government controlled Healthcare Systems funded out of the general 'tax pool' and use that monopoly power to bargain the costs of drugs etc down. The private health companies actually end up costing the tax payer more because despite the fancy slogans when they fuck up an operation the patient go's straight to an NHS ICU

@RedNProud Exactly! Actually, Canada isn't completly free of private clinics. I for one went in one for a knee problem after a soccer injury. The physician just took a basic X-ray with a fluorescent injection and said you're ok, it's just a sprained ligament. Well, my problem was a completly sectioned cruciate ligament (I could hardly walk and I was 24 years old). Guess what? I ended-up in a PUBLIC hospital for surgery and three months of physiotherapy !

Also, since we know that Washington is a side show most of the time, where anything can and will be said by both parties to advance their real agenda, we have to be skeptical that any plan that starts out as not universal healthcare, will create incentives to basically force such a system in the future.

Obviously there won't be actual death panels, but the effect may still be there. Obama's doc and Maher talk positively about Medicare, but Medicare and Social Security are going bankrupt, so a program like those, regardless of effectiveness I don't see as economically worthwhile. So, either, we'll take care of everyone and go bankrupt, or the payers ( the govt.) will decide who gets what treatment, and that might as well be a "death panel."

The problem will continue to lay where it does today: People will refuse to take and abide by the advice their health care providers give them. What is Obamacare going to do differently? Outlaw Mcdonalds and cigarettes? Give everyone a free gym membership? Give me a break. The government will be just as persuasive in curbing our eating habits as the doctors have been, and there will be no money "saved" with this plan. By the way, Obama's choice for surgeon general was an adviser for Burger King.

This is the reason people fear a government take-over of health care. People like Bill Maher and Ariana Huffington giving us their opinion on how to treat patiens. On what basis? Doctors go to school for years and years taking hard classes that not just anyone can take and pass in order to be qualified to render their medical opinion. It is absurd to believe that doctors these days do not counsel their patients on things like weight and nutrition as well as a wide range of preventative topics.

Even Issa was saying that that's the way to go, and that it would pretty lead to a 30% trim on US healthcare spending overnight. While I'm glad he was/is putting forth a bill like that, it seems to me that very, VERY few Americans would ever go for something like that because of silly ideological prejudices. You can make it tiered later, but single-payer has to be the first step
