In slappys fight with Hopkins, slappy was knocked down in the first round and tagged often by Hopkins. It sure looked like Hopkins won. He ended up losing by a 12-round split decision, but I had Bernard winning easily by two to three rounds based on the more effective punching.
While Hopkins was drilling slappy all night with hard right hands, slappy could only fire back with a lot of slaps. slappy could have helped make himself a star giving Hopkins a rematch, but he didnt. I wonder why?

But he never beat a great prime fighter, exept for Hopkins and Calzaghe he never had big fights. I don't think many boxingexperts, certainly not those of the future, will rate him high. And I can't imagine an expert (exept maybe 1 of his countrymen) rate him at the same level as Hopkins or Jones.

When Joe had beaten Lacy and Kessler and there was noone good enough left in his division, only then Jones and Hopkins fought him in US, knowing the money would make up for losing and they could use the excuse of being older. All possible contenders in Joe's years of boxing he either beat or were beaten by one of his victims. Not his fault he was dominant.

@dunlap15 Pavlik? He was the one supposed to beat Joe, whereas Hopkins was supposed to be an old man, and then look what Hopkins did to him. Other possible contenders lost to people beaten by Joe, like some champs in the last few years. There was noone good enough left for Joe. He wanted some big pay day fights earlier and proper recognition, but had to settle for the big name ones just before retirement. There's no reason to carry on well past your best. Hopkins has been an exception.

If you really evaluate Calzaghe's carrer, its been pretty mediocre. Name his top five wins. Out of that list everyone is pretty mediocre. 3 ancient fighters. Hopkins(was robbed), Eubank, and Roy. Calzaghes team are a clever wily bunch of businessmen, they managed the talented boxer exactly how it should be done, I just hope he stays retired and preserves his health for family sake. Boxing is a team effort folks, never forget that. I just wonder sometimes if his team have created enough credible box-office memorabilia around him against primetime opponents on foreign soil for the fans to honour him throughout the ages.

hopkins only did decent because he faked getting low blowed to take breaks and threw many low blows on calzaghe. and um... did any of you notice he CONSTANT head-butting? hopkins did a good job being an awkward fighter but he also did a good job fucking calzaghe up by cheating. No they don't - you don't win fights by being negative the whole time and occasionally pot shotting then holding. When Ricky Hatton holds he is regarded as some wrestling unskilled loser but when Hopkins does it its ok and is a testament to his skills. Hopkins got outworked in the Calzaghe fight by doing very little and cheating to get recovery time because he was being forced to fight at a pace he didn't like. Simple.
