What an awesome video! The fact that people disagree with your thesis (3rd wave ska is sell-out music) should just show you that you picked a nice arguable point.
Most of us have yet to dive into the pleasures of the first and second waves. I have, and I can see your animosity towards us. lol. But any type of ska is fucking good. CAN YOU AGREE?
whats up with all the guys from the first and second wave hatin third wave, and the the guys from 3rd wave era hating old ska,,,,,,,, i like all the waves so shut the fuck up and just listen to the fucking music
I love ska. I listen to all genres of ska. I would have to confess that I listen to third wave more often than others. But in the end I always find ways to enjoy all styles of ska. 1-3
Pretty good documentary. I don't completely agree with Third Wave ska selling out, though. I know plenty of people that still enjoy The Skatellites, The Specials and other 2nd wave or 1st wave bands. I think Third Wave ska has evolved the genre more than sold out - in the same sense that rap has changed from the 80's to how it is now - lots of people still love the old stuff, but nobody plays it that way because the music has become something else.
I mean a think part of ska nowadays is letting go of being "cool" and listening to all the hip music or being part of the hip scenes that get you popular, you know? I have built great friendships with fellow ska kids. If you ask me it's about saying no to society's music and saying yes to ska. Standing up for and hanging with fellow ska kids. Might not have been what it started out to be as, but I think its turned into it.
Ska is not A music of peace in the begin, it was more Revenge. Rude boys turned they back tot the massa people and politics. Became the reggae time With the rasta was peace important. Most of al the rudies and skinhead where against peace and hippies.
And why ska is lost? because that bullshit American raped ska? Ska, rocksteady, reggae, reggaeton is still in proggess!
Good Video, but granted the scene is just a shadow of what it was can't we use the commecialization and the downfall of it as a lesson? Ska music is finding itself again, it will be back, it will be.
fucking awsome videosbut as you said i think theres a diff between ska kids and rude boys even though a lot of ska kids dress rude idk usally you can tell the diff just by looking at them or how they dance
It's an interesting video for sure. You overlook a lot of things about the music though. Music is much simpler than you've explained here. There doesn't have to be some great underlying social problem which needs to be remedied by a wave of music. It's about going out, having a good time, and forgetting about how shitty things are. Skanking? Sure, people may look ridiculous skanking at ska/punk shows, but the fact is that nobody cares, and anyone who's a fan of the music doesn't judge.
Well researched. Very good overview of the origins of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd wave. I disagree with your total dissing of third wave, though. I'm not saying some of those bands aren't all about marketing and have no soul ("RBF", yes), but some more "modern" ska bands are very good-Mustard Plug ("Skank by Numbers"!-check it!), The Busters, Tokyo Ska Paradise, Venice Shoreline Chris (okay his roots are more first wave) and Bim Skala Bim for Christ's sake!!
you must not have a local tradicinal ska scene and not only one style of a ska dance "stayed"... at the shows i go to, people do the SKA and skanking is for reggae.... runing in place is not a form of dance...
I love all ska, more of a 3rd wave guy myself though.

That's it!!! There are so many kids who say they listen to Ska music but they only mean bands like Mad Caddies.
God save the true sound of the Skatalites!!!
