I'm a big fan of Branagh and i consider his Hamlet to be the greatest film ever, but I have to admit that Hawke's soliloquie moves me to tears. It has to do with the direction too of course.
Generally I want to note that it is not fair to judge a performance not having watched the whole film first to sense the atmosphere. How can you judge Iain Glen's delivery (how noble in reason - burp! --LOL!) if you don't know he plays in a comedy for example.
That's my grandfather in the Burton Hamlet. He's wearing the lighter jacket. He would later go on to write Letters from an Actor about his experiences in that production.
@universeiswise I don't know the specific venues off the top of my head; I know they started in Toronto, had a brief run in Boston, and then moved onto Broadway where they ran for 137 performances right in the middle of Burton/Taylor mania. But the book talks all about the experience of doing the show, shares some of Burton's great drunken anecdotes, and I think (as unbiased as I can be) is essential reading for anyone who wants to be a stage actor.
