This is a great version of this song. I sang this for an audition yesterday XD
My version of it is on my channel. I only had one shot at it because i live in an apartment complex and i didn't want anybody to kill me for singing to loud. So if you guys could check it out, i would appreciate some feedback! =)
As a former Musical Theatre actor/singer who toured for a long while with Les Mis, Chess and others, she does a great job with this piece. The placement is very consistent, and her vowel formations are on the mark. If you look at this piece from a theoretical and compositional style, it is VERY difficult to sing - with any voice. She has done an exemplary job with the styling, use of shade, as well as the use of the power in themix of her head/chest voice. BRAVO dear!
LOVE this musical interpretation. she killed it and i am buying all of it. and i also happen to like her acting. it's very personal and heartfelt. get it girl.
I actually like the 'afraid'. Bright vowels are just ICK so I love how she sang it :) Singing it with a straight ayy sound would made her sound kind of childish.
I've been looking all over for a good interpretation of the song and found dozens on YouTube. This is the only one I stopped and listened to. It is excellent on all levels - acting, interpretation, voice. Thank you.
I feel its very good. She just took it a different way then most people would see it. She makes it a more enjoyable song. Normally this song is very intense. Great Job :)
Her voice is very pretty, and fine for the song - but I felt like there was no performance with the song - just no connection. She was just singing through the words, going through the motions.
why would you make such a comment like that? you obviously don't know what your talking about. you just made that comment to make her feel bad her performance was outstanding nonetheless
Really good. The point is that she IS the character - it really doesn't matter if there is the odd slip. You have to start with the words, the character and finally add the music. Great voice by the way
I know it's been awhile since you've posted it- I'm getting ready to do the show and am looking at different versions now. You did such a geat job here- really really good. And very helpful for passing on ideas for young artists. Thanks so much! Sounds great and so believable:) Best wishes!
Yeah her afraid is a bit of an eh instead of a straight "a" sound, but otherwise not horrible. It could be a lot worse. She has a pleasant tone, and one can overlook an slight vowel deviation.
Umm, what are you talking about. You wouldn't sing ehfraid. That isn't the word. I know you are trying to be helpful, but I don't think you got the point I was making.
Why is it that people feel the need to bash and be rude in these comments sections? I was in fact defending the video and performance in my original comment. If you are talking about phonation and production of an A sound then yeah you are correct in that it can be thought of as a combination of eh and a. I didn't question or attack your opinion. I just said that you might have misunderstood what I was commenting on. Honestly, can't people just be nice on here.
I don't know much of anything. I think as singers we all focus and struggle on different obstacles. It's easy to misunderstand typed English. There is so much that is lost in the translation from voice to text. Sorry if I misunderstood what you were saying.
Wow, She's great! I love how she connects with her audience, it feels like she's singing just to me. Thanks for posting this! This song fits her voice well.
You know, I like this version more than Natalie Weiss' version. And that's saying something. I just feel for it more. For all the acting-bashing comments...I connected with her, so she must be doing something right.
Good, a little children's show presenter at the start, not how I would personally portray it, but it made the contrast with the david section prominant.
sorry...not an expert...i just now what she needs to improve...
i guess when this happens sometimes people READ the lyrics to another person...and then sing it as if they where talking to that person...in the end practice helps...perhaps it works to u too...
i need i just need to gain confidence and keep better focus or being the character rather than pretending to be/portaying a character.. if that makes sence?
I like to type up the lyrics and read them as if I were making a motivational speech. After repeating this several times, I can get a feel for the phrasing, vocal qualities, and rhythm associated with this monologue. At this point I will read it out loud so I can better hear how these things could apply to the song.
When you strip the song of all the technical details, it can free you up to focus on your interpretation. If you've not heard the song before, try reading it before listening.
Ask yourself what the lyricist is trying to convey.Identify the emotions in the song. Look in your life for situations where you experienced the emotions called for by the song. Allow yourself to really explore the song and be touched by it. It's about being authentic and allowing yourself to feel. If you are uncomfortable with emotional pain and crying, this will be difficult. The singers we consider extraordinary are able to connect with the emotions of songs (example, Audra McDonald).
The pianist did an amazing job! Congrats... I love it in the end, when she skips the "And watch them fall" part, he hits the missing Bb on the left hand to make the transition to the final A!
Wow, FanisCI, 10,003 points for the best ear. Sometimes the stress of a live performance does strange things to the memory, and you always have to be ready.
Honestly, though, I really like the dissonance of that ascending arpeggio against the Bb, so when I realized we skipped it, I just had to give the Bb a little love :)
I'm sorry man - I love her voice, but her timing is... well, 'white', for lack of a better word. Listen without looking - she's rushing the phrasing on the entire thing, and the rhythm section is together. I just played this chart with the musical director of Wicked in L.A. Listen with your ears, not your prejudice. Like I said, not taking anything away from her voice - I like it! - I'm trying to encourage her to be a better all round musician, that's all.
Great voice but her timing is very rushed. Take up drums or something to really get a feel for rhythm. Great voice. Now be musical, not just another pretty singer.
dude! she's spot on. the drums are off when you listen to the piano (or, if you see the drums as the middle of the ritme section, the piano is off and so is she). but she follows the piano quit good.
you sound hot gerl! DONT let your support collapse and come off the breath though just b.c you think it's stylistically right1 You sound fantastic..so sing those quiet parts! Be not afriad you sing from the pelvis!! BRAVA!
I've gotta say, the gestures were a bit much at first, BUT!!!!!....it was all worth it for the wave of the had at "He's afraid to trust me." THAT werqued!!! There's a Merman in there waiting to get out. But there's probably a Mimi, too. Interesting voice. I was moved and compelled.
I notice a lot of people over critiquing you performance and I honestly can't see what they are talking about. You performance was flawless. Quite possibly THE best version of this song I have ever seen. Fantastic interpretation. I could really see the emotion and your voice gave me chills. Just when I thought you were going to do the entire song in a headvoice/mix, you bust out this phenomenal belt. Amazing. Pure Beauty. Pure art. Thank You
@MusicalsDork BTW, there is no such thing as a 'belt' unless you're damaging your voice. It's not physically possible beyond a certain point in someone's voice. So she is mixing, she's using the right technique and the point of a mix is to get the effect of a 'belt'. Just saying :)
She sings this kind of how I imagine Lucy from You're a Good Man Charlie Brown would sing it...I agree with the other posters, the point is she IS afraid, she's not just thick...
she has a wonderful voice if you listen without watching you can feel it. but when you watch it you can tell she isnt invested the way an actress would be
All this "facial acting" with each word you say actually takes AWAY from the entire performance instead of "creating" it. This is further complicated by a misunderstanding of what you are singing ABOUT. It's NOT a woman's bold declaration of fearlessness. It's TRULY about "david's" fear to love her.
That's what I thought too. When I first heard the song I definitely never took it as her being actually kind of cocky about not being afraid of anything. Not my cup of tea interpretation, that's for sure. She's a great singer though.
Vocally a wonderful performance! The true problem lies in greatly lacking song interpretation and acting. On the vocal performance front, a common error is called the "I REALLY MEAN IT" HEAD. Instead of placing your focus on the intention of the song, and singing simply, moving head and body ONLY to serve the song, you shake your head, make faces, and "SHOW US" that you're acting.
the chorus after the mama's afraid of crying verse it's supposed to be "who would give up what they want without a trial, another mile". But she covers it VERY well, obviously and it's a good performance.
but i have two things to tell you your rushing things your going ahead of the music
and two nobody knew you messed up the lyrics unless they know the song but when you looked side to side that gave it away never let them know you messed up
Chill bro. Sure, Heather did a great job, and her less than strict adherance to the timing adds to rather than detracts from the interpretation. But one may enjoy one style and another may not so much. Live and let live, at least on matters of taste, or lack thereof, eh?
i love the irony in most of 'songs for a new world'. especially this one (where she clearly IS afraid), and also in 'stars and the moon', where when she gets what she wants, she isn't happy.
i love how the acting in both this video and colleen's SATM portray that irony. your facial expressions are GREAT.
She's supposed to sing "Who would give up what they want without a trial, Another mile" and instead sings a previous lyric "Tell me where's the challenge if you never try, So watch me fly" catches her mistake and ends up singing "Tell me where's the challenge if you never try, Another mile", a combination of the two.
yeah... see my original comment "Wow, that was STUNNING. You sounded amazing and really kept in character even when you flubbed the lyrics."
and then
mileyandmandyLOVE asked "flub? when?"
which is when I replied with the information to which you seem to be taking offence. I didn't mean any harm, I swear, I think she has a great voice and admire her composure for not having a facial tell AT ALL when she screwed up the lyrics. NO DISRESPECT WAS MEANT.
Am I the only one hearing timing issues for the first half of the song? (Vocally.) Anyway, the last two minutes are OUSTANDING! Vocally and acting-wise. :)
It depends on what you mean by "issues". JRB's style of writing often has very rhythmic accompaniment and very conversational lyrics and vocal line. Compare the written music with the original recordings- they are often rhythmically contrary to what is written, in order to sound even more conversational. This is what Heather tried to do, to bring a bit more realism to the piece. Thanks for dropping by!
Don't have the written music - but I do have the original recording, (I am very familiar with it and I am familiar with the way Jason composes), and I am seeing a timing issue that way. But maybe he composed this song differently originally? Regardless, I did enjoy the performance even with being a little thrown off in the beginning. :) And thanks for the reply!
Wow. This my favorite version of this song. I like it more than the CD. It has so much power and emotion. I love how it was acted. I know it's big, but it's actually how I've always pictured it if I were to direct the show.
a wonderful performance. I disagree with some of the comments about over-acting. The point IS that the character is over-acting to try and convince herself that her life is lovely etc, but behind it all, she really is afraid and I think the link between those emotions is caught bang on in this performance.
wow, that was amazing. Gave me chills. I felt the acting seemed a bit over the top at first but it all came together in the end. You could see the growth and that's something I've never really seen in this song before.
Okay the transition from the sad part where she sings, He's afraid of me. to I'm not afraid of anything was SO AMAZING. Seriously, brought tears to my eyes. Wonderful. I'm uber jealous.
really? b/c i've never seen that song come so much to life... usually ppl perform it and u're like "come on - you can do so much more..." - i thought she was perfect...
Great peformance! I for one loved the over-reacting. I've seen other people sing this song, and they just kind of sit there, and its boring. You make it funs to watch and liesten to! keep it up!
Question! I wanted to sing this song possibly for semi-finals here in Hawaii, and i wanted to know if there was possibly a Karaoke recorded track? Or is the only way to get a hold of it, is Piano? And if thats the case... what music book do you have? =] BTW girl. You have a beautiful voice. You kinda rushed it...
omg this is absolutely amazing

But who cares, its obliviously not all that noticeable!
This performance is awesome!

Besides rushing a little bit, the performance was phenominal =). I'm a bit of a theatre geek and I'm glad you got into character well =)
GrlxAnachronism1 3 years ago
yeah you have a great voice
but i have two things to tell you your rushing things your going ahead of the music
and two nobody knew you messed up the lyrics unless they know the song but when you looked side to side that gave it away never let them know you messed up

oh mi god this is sooooooo good!!! from what musical? or is it from a musical?
tthheesshhiizz 3 years ago
Chill bro. Sure, Heather did a great job, and her less than strict adherance to the timing adds to rather than detracts from the interpretation. But one may enjoy one style and another may not so much. Live and let live, at least on matters of taste, or lack thereof, eh?

i love the irony in most of 'songs for a new world'. especially this one (where she clearly IS afraid), and also in 'stars and the moon', where when she gets what she wants, she isn't happy.
i love how the acting in both this video and colleen's SATM portray that irony. your facial expressions are GREAT.
ladeebear 3 years ago
Wow, that was STUNNING. You sounded amazing and really kept in character even when you flubbed the lyrics.
Magalamb 3 years ago
flub?
when?
mileyandmandyLOVE 3 years ago
2:26-2:35
She's supposed to sing "Who would give up what they want without a trial, Another mile" and instead sings a previous lyric "Tell me where's the challenge if you never try, So watch me fly" catches her mistake and ends up singing "Tell me where's the challenge if you never try, Another mile", a combination of the two.

huh?

Congratulations! Now did you enjoy it?

yeah... see my original comment "Wow, that was STUNNING.
Magalamb 3 years ago
My bad... YouTube wasn't showing your comment attached to the other thread.
Strangely enough, she left out a whole line right near the end, but I don't think anyone's mentioned that yet.
Thanks for stopping by. Seriously. Anybody THAT into JRB music is probably a friend of mine :)

Am I the only one hearing timing issues for the first half of the song? (Vocally.) Anyway, the last two minutes are OUSTANDING! Vocally and acting-wise. :)
overthemoo 4 years ago
It depends on what you mean by "issues". JRB's style of writing often has very rhythmic accompaniment and very conversational lyrics and vocal line. Compare the written music with the original recordings- they are often rhythmically contrary to what is written, in order to sound even more conversational. This is what Heather tried to do, to bring a bit more realism to the piece. Thanks for dropping by!
sc0tlas 4 years ago
Don't have the written music - but I do have the original recording, (I am very familiar with it and I am familiar with the way Jason composes), and I am seeing a timing issue that way. But maybe he composed this song differently originally? Regardless, I did enjoy the performance even with being a little thrown off in the beginning. :) And thanks for the reply!

Very solid. It's quite legit, but needs to work on dynamics a tid bit. But still, very good! :) 8/10

Wow. This my favorite version of this song. I like it more than the CD. It has so much power and emotion. I love how it was acted. I know it's big, but it's actually how I've always pictured it if I were to direct the show.

I love what you did with the David part
Good performance
optimuschloex 4 years ago
a wonderful performance. I disagree with some of the comments about over-acting. The point IS that the character is over-acting to try and convince herself that her life is lovely etc, but behind it all, she really is afraid and I think the link between those emotions is caught bang on in this performance.
shopalotgrrl 4 years ago
you completely inspired me.
so much, that i decided to sing this song for an audition, and i ended up getting a callback.
if it wasn't for you're completely sick talent, i wouldn't have thought to try this song.
thank you.
xfabulous529x 4 years ago
wow, that was amazing.
