  • I agree with most of the posts here...Terry was the backbone of Chicago. They sold a lot of records after he died, but they were soulless top forty type hits...nothing meaningful like South California Purples or Listen...so sad that people don't know how good he was

  • Terry era Chicago. Terry was Chicago.

  • I think terry kath is the greatest guitarest that I ever heard in 64 yrs from Dp

    Thanks mr Terry Kath

  • When I first heard Terry, with The "Links", it was at a rehearsal, in Berkely or Bellwood, IL.That night, he mostly played bass, and I thought he was ok. The fist time I saw him with The Big Thing, I couldn't believe how much he played !!! When he started to sing, the soulfulness, yet warmth in his voice, brought tears to my eyes. I only wish, I'd had a chance to sing harmony, with him. I cry even more now, when he touches me with that voice, that's no longer here. Hope he's found peace, at last.

  • Heaven must have one hell of a band!!

  • There is still a big hole in the heart of Chicago. Happy belated bday Terry, RIP♥

  • MISS YOU TERRY

  • Terry Kath....sang like Ray Charles....played like Jimi Hendrix....and had more soul than both of my shoes....R.I.P. Terry Kath....would've been 66 today, 1-31-2012.

  • @H1wyStr Thank you.This is true.

  • We love you Terry Bro...RIP.

  • RIP Terry Kath. You made this song immortal, brother. Love you!

  • Amen @alecdios!

  • MY SISTER DANCED HER FIRST DANCE AT HER WEDDING IN 1972 AND ALSO AT HER 25TH ANIVERSARY PARTY NOT BAD

  • I was born in 95 and i still like good music...

  • The only singer that could truly do this song justice would be David Clayton-Thomas of Blood Sweat and Tears!! He and Terry share that amazing Whiskey Blues/Jazz vocal tone! Two of my favorite singers of all time!

  • piano solo at the beginning scares the shit outa me.

    gotta stop watching horror flicks.

  • kath was genius on par with einstein.

brian wilson has got to love this song.

  • Only Jethro Tull had the skills that Walter has. So many forget what what the horn section gives to the band. He is an amazing horn player.

  • Terry..we miss you and love you...Love your voice....can't wait to see you in heaven.....

  • This has to be the perfect song ever recorded, and song by one of the greatest voices...Mr. Terry Kath.

  • @dreadboy77 This was ripped off from Bach like that song 16 Vestal Virgins by Procol Harum.

  • @metamorphosis67 Do you mean Whiter Shade of Pale because those lyrics "...16 Vestal Virgins....

  • Nobody sings this song like Terry Kath, no slight to Bob Lamm this was Terry's song!!!

  • Probably the only guitarist that Jimi Hendrix was in awe of. The most underrated rock musician of all time. He gave Chicago its backbone. If only that gun wasn't loaded.

    RIP Terry.

  • @dcbandnerd He was the soul of Chicago...That talent, that voice!!

  • Awesome tune

  • maybe he knew

  • our wedding song - terry gone just months later - he thought the gun wasn't loaded

  • rules!!

  • awesome!

  • jIMI HENDRIX HAD only ONE MUSIC iCON THAT HE LOVED TO SEE OVER AND OVER TERRY KATH...

  • Still gives me goosebumps to hear this. Terry was my teen crush and an alum of my High School WH Taft. My neighbor was one of his best friends. Sad day when he told me that Terry died.

  • Loved this when I first heard it in 1969,love it more than ever.

  • God Bless.

  • such a soulful haunting melody...I am still stunned by his sudden departure to the Spirit in the Sky....Mairé

  • No one sings tgis song better than Terry Kath!!

  • My ex used to play the piano and would play this song to me...always dedicating it to 'mom' to my kids as we listened to him play. It has been years since I listened to it and thought it was the appropriate time to listen without the tears....I hope you and Laura rot in hell...

  • @Bloooshh LOL!

  • I was coming on the home from my English midterm that day; after the news spread from the front to the back of the crowded city bus I'll never forget how quiet everyone became.

  • I was actually playing a pickup game of ice hockey in a rink in Montreal when I found out he died. Many of us stopped playing that night. I had to wait for a girl (who was figure skating in a adjacent rink) before my dad drove us both home. RIP Terry. Your voice was marvelous. No one can sing "Color My World" or "Make me smile" like you.

  • I would never tought so many people loves him like this, Terry is the best and is Chicago for sure

  • Beautiful song. Love it every time I listen to it.

  • la vie est belle en terry !!!

  • Robert Lamm is The Best.... BUT Terry Kath is BETTER

  • UUUUUHHHHHHH...TERRY...TERRY...

  • god he was great.

  • I Love Chicago, and Terry Kath! My boyfriend Billy and I were in Love then, and danced every time to their songs, This was Our Song, We saw them in Person, at a Club, and every time they played this, billy would take my hand and whisper how much he loved me, and we would dance. that was a Magical Time. Wish we could go back. Did not know of Terry passing, God Bless Him! GIGI

  • Terry Kath was Chicago.

  • @Amymaggiemoo He's great, but let's not get carried away.

  • i agree i stilllike terry kath

  • Kath IS the most underrated Guitar player ever. Even Hendrix made the comment that Kath was a better guitarist than himself. They toured together. That is saying something.

  • This is the real Chicago as i grow up i the early 70-ts.

  • Short and sweet, simple and to the point. This was his most beautiful work.

  • @Ovrkyl James Pankow wrote this so you can't very well call it Kath's work

  • @CityslickCaptain It doesn't matter, did Pankow sing it with his "amazing" voice? No, Kath did, and that's why it's his work.

  • For months I saw CTA at Barnaby's Circus in Chicago - I worked nights and would walk over to the club (about 12:30 am), sit in the club's balcony drinking cokes and watch their show. They would do their regular routine, take a break and after five minutes Terry, the bass player and drummer would come back up and do their Cream and Hendrix impression, after about 15 minutes of that the band would come up. 8 months later I am in the Army at Fort Hood TX. , in the commissary I see their 1st album

  • @bigmikeinnj

Fookin Mike! now you got me on a Chicago listenin spree. Damn..LOL

  • It was the first song I ever played on the piano. It holds a special place in my heart.;) God Bless.

  • Since composer James Pankow does not play his trombone on this song,he could sing it.

  • if Kath played a guitar solo on - it would be in every players bag-o-tricks....a missed opportunity.

  • Terry and Robert both have awsome voices, good enough to have been a part of Motown's Blue Eye'd Soul Roster, RIP Terry, and i hope i get to see Robert sing this live one day

  • Beautiful song. Beautiful singing.

  • Was Chicago actually sue by the CTA in shortening their name?

Their original name was chicago transit authority

  • This is STILL Chicago's signature song IMHO.

  • Comment removed

  • This is the song that made me become a chicago fan at a young age

  • The Best. R I P Terry, rock on Chicago.

  • I watched Terry sing this live. He was awesome! Nobody can replace him singing this song because it was made for him only..

  • We love you Terry...keep our place in heaven.

  • Just heard this song minutes ago on the radio for probably the first time in my life...and love it.

  • Piccalo players a mutha fucka! LOL! anyone heard that one??

  • When this song came out, in the early 70's, there weren't many songs to slow dance to. This gem was the big exception. It was just beautiful, and still is.. Every garage band in the country knew how to play this for the one "slow song," but no one did it as beautifully as Chicago, ever..

  • Gran legado de un grupo de elegidos.

    Gracias ...gracias.... gracias....

  • This guy has an amazing voice, tragic loss for sure. I used to play this on my parents keyboard when I was a kid. My dad had the greatest hits tape in his car and I must say that I was often listening to it even as a 10 yr old. Now I'm 39 and rediscovering this great music. Props to the poster for putting this up on here. Great music , music these days doesn't come close !

  • I can't believe how much I miss Terry Kath. Love, always. Kenja.

  • A GREAT LOSS RIP TERRY

  • An amazing slow dance, saw Chicago live in Montreal 1976, a concert to be remembered!

  • Beautiful "boomer music" for all generations to enjoy!

  • There is no point for us to compare Terry & Bobby. Both of them are Chicago. And both sang it well. Let us enjoy their songs.

  • My wedding song...but sadly my wife is gone...Yesterday was her birthday!

  • @poots2988 My huband is gone too . I know how you feel. Bonnie in Alabama...

  • @poots2988 what a beautiful song to have for your wedding. So sorry for your loss. She is with TK in heaven dancing for you right now.

  • A bittersweet moment. Having your dearly departed wife on your mind on the anniversary of her birth. I'm sure she's on your mind every day of the year. My condolences to you.

  • This song was my favorite when I was a girl, now, I sing and play the notes with my

electronic piano, it s a Yamaha, and use the flauta voice, very nice , is lovely, nobody teach me,

I learn how to play it, alone, earing, and practicing , I enjoy so much. Congratulations.

  • My all time favorite song.

  • BEAUTIFUL!!!!

  • Terry, you STILLand ALWAYS WILL Colour MY World...

(@okpatriot) No offense to Bobby LAMM, but there is NO WAY he does this song better than Terry, Just as Terry could never do with "Beginnings" what Bobby did for "Beginnings"! Terry OWNED this song!

  • @carina2244 well said

  • Robert Lamb sings this sooo much better!!! He has a better voice!!

  • SAW TERRY LIVE AT LEAST 10 TIMES WE MISS YOU VERY MUCH

  • WOW NICE, REALLY NICE !!!! THIS IS ONE OF THOSE SONGS THAT ONLY ONE PERSON WAS MEANT TO SING. ~ R.I.P. TERRY~

  • terry the bomb rip

  • awesome!!!

  • Yall ever heard the story about Hendrix telling another member of Chicago (and I can't remember who) " hey you know your guitar player is better than I am"

  • @tpggroup He told Walt Parazaider (sax and woodwinds player). He also told Jimmy Guercio, the band's producer. Walt has said that Jimi tapped him on the shoulder and said, "Your horn section sounds like one set of lungs and your guitar player is better than me." In an interview in VH1's Behind the Music", he said that when he turned around and saw Jimi Hendrix standing there saying those things, he thought that someone must have slipped him acid! LOL

  • Love it! A part of my teenage years, and I STILL love to play it on flute & trumpet (not simultaneously, but close!) - my instrumental(s) version's posted on "My Uploads: Jazz Tunes", in the "playlist" section. My favorite flutin' tune ever!!!

  • beautiful

  • MISS YOU TERRY R I P

  • @Steffarinelli Michael Bolton can't carry a tune in a bag with a handle! All he does is scream off key! My voice teacher teacher would shoot me if she heard me sing like that!!

  • Kiss rocker Paul Stanley's voice is just about equivalent in tone to Michael Bolton's. Bolton would have been an excellent replacement for Stanley if Stanley ever left the group.

  • STAY in Canada @ellocoman. NEVER DARKEN the streets of Chicago with your opinions!

  • Although CHICAGO is still performing, it hasn't been the same since drummer Danny Seraphine was fired, Peter Cetera quit to go solo, and Terry Kath died. Terry, you left us all way too soon and we still ask why but you are still loved and revered and you will live on forever through your music.

  • The one... the only... the inimitable Terry Kath.

This song makes me cry my eyeballs out from missing him every time I hear Bobby play the first three notes.

  • There is a place in our hearts for the beautiful and this song by James Pankow sung oh,so so beautifully by Terry , fits in so well.

  • @ leftfootlouie -- So nicely said! Thanks! There is a big place in my heart for Terry and always will be.

  • Thanks to Terry and Chicago - I love the early years beginning with Chicago Transit authority. They were pioneers and to be compared with ABBA and stuff like that shows how many people have a püroblem wioth the ears.

    From the austian mountains.

    Grizz

  • jus goes to show wht the rock and roll hall of fame is...dont know how tht works...maybe chicago doesnt want to be in

  • Sorry but Mikeal Bolton is not in the same league as ANYONE that sings in the group CHICAGO! That's my opinion. Terry Kath was awesome and I miss that guy!!!!

  • AMEN !

  • @steffarinelli Damn Right!!! Michael Bolton can't carry a tune in a bag with a handle!! He is never on pitch he just screeches and screams off key!!! My volce teacher would strangle me if I sang like that!!

  • @mtyemti Michael Bolton sux donkey ass, who ever gave him a recording contract should be flogged

  • @MotownMaster But before Bolton they should flogg those two homos in Kiss Paul Stanley & Gene Simmons cuz they suck even more with their clown customs.

  • @steffarinelli I miss him to...such a great musician...

  • Alright Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame voters, you voted in freakin` ABBA. Chicago pioneered a style of Jazz/rock fusion, featured some of the most talented musicians of the last 30 years and had 50 charted hits. What is there a conspiracy to keep them out?

  • Bobby Lamm is an exceptional musician, but Kath was the backbone and the soul of the band. Cetera was replaceable.

  • I do miss Cetera on 25 or 6 to 4.

  • TAKE ME BACK TO MY FIRST LOVE ILLANA

  • This song would have been nothing without Kath's vocals.

  • This voice is so soulfull, it is the main ingredient of the song....Yeah it has good

lay out of instruments as basic track...But the voice is so great....it touch our heart directly....Nobody else in Chicago has that kind of soul....I am not saying they can't sing good ( except Scheff that I just can't stand as a singer....) And Champlin always do too much....But here we have great feeling in each lines he sings.....I just love his voice.....Like a Ray Charles.....type of voice....

  • Bullshit! Lee has an incredible singing talent as well.

  • I am not saying Lee can't sing...But his not that type of singer....Again it is all in people's personnal choices. One like Mercedes the other perfer Porsche....that goes for everything....cheer.

  • @solly7 -It would absolutely have been an instrumental without his vocals.

  • @solly7 I only wish there could have been more verses with Terry singing. But then it's perfect the way it is.

  • @solly7 Robert Lamm would've done the same justice. But that's my only argument.

  • Kath and Cetera were the backbone of Chicago, the band was never the same after the death of Kath but when Cetera left too, Chicago was finished.

  • And what was Robert Lamm, chopped liver? He is my favorite of Chicago's vocalists.

  • Everybody has a different style. He sing well his own song....Saturday in the park and stuff...even 25 or 6 to 4 on his own show ( saw it here on youTube) And he did it great, better than Scheff to my taste.

And Yes he does sing great....And he is one of my favourite too in the band.....but the secret is the three of them singing together, or each one a part of a song it is like magic.....

  • i love this song but i always felt it wasnt finished it needed another written verse or two after the flute solo, does anyone else agree, the song was too short.

  • My father did this song and he just repeated the song after the flute part......comes out nice!

  • did he post it here on youtube?

  • i think the song is perfect. it says everything it needs to.

  • it is perfect but when you have perfection you want it to go on a little longer.

  • Yes, it is a rather short number but you have to be careful flirting with perfection. I always wished the song carried on a little longer as well. It carries you along and ya don't want the ride to stop. understandable.

  • Hear ! Hear! Sans the flute solo... The song is far too short

  • well there IS a second part to the song but it's separate from the main body of the song.....it's the last song in the "Ballet for a girl in Buchanan" medley on side 2 of the second Chicago album.

  • Comment removed

  • Hey Jim-this one's for you, r you out there? X

  • And I've always thought it was Robert Lamm who did the vocals on this one...Terry is not only an awesome guitar player, also a soulful singer.

  • So did I! Until recently I also thought someone else sang this, as well as other greats Terry sang. Until the access of the net, We never saw much footage of Early Chicago. It just seemed Impossible that One could be so talented.

  • WOW! Having lived thru that era, I really took for granted the kind of MONSTER tallent we had in Terry. Here was a guy that could Smoke Guitar Leads and sing like that? Unbeliveable combination! It's depressing when I see what we are handed today ie. American Idol. Greatly Miss that guy!

  • Nobody could have said this better than did you!

  • Aye

Seriously, when this song first came out, long before the advent of music videos, I honestly thought it was sung by a black guy doing a tremendous Ray Charles kind of thing.

Little did I know that it was TK, the man who could play anything after hearing it once, play his own material as would a wild man, and sing with such incredible soul.

Just listen to him on "Make Me Smile," and you can hear the power he could also project with that monster voice.

  • @thwack32 Yeah you pretty much summed it up.

  • @thwack32 Yep.

  • @thwack32 Funny, just moments ago, I was telling my wife almost the EXACT same thing! I only wish I had truly appreciated his talent a tenth as much then, as I do now, 40 years later!

  • Wow. Brings a tear to my eyes.

  • simply beautiful Terry.

  • sweet music....

  • Terry Kath was so talented and he is sorely missed.

Most bands would have faded into obscurity after a similar loss.

Hats off to Chicago for pushing on while always honoring their friend.

  • How many people initially thought this was a black man singing because of the rich, smooth, soulful voice? Terry was called the White Ray Charles for a reason ... still is! What a voice, and this song is so gorgeous for something like 39 words.

  • Other white male singers joining Terry Kath's league would include,Michael McDonald,Michael Bolton,Gary Puckett,Daryl Hall,Bill Medley,K.C. who led the Sunshine Band and Barry Gibb. I would have mentioned Robert Palmer and Medley's Righteous Brothers partner Bobby Hatfield but they're in heaven with Kath.

  • yeah, but Terry was better than any of these guys you've listed here......

  • @arhuxtable seriously???? your gonna try and put some disco schmucks like Barry Gib and that KC dushe bag in the same class as Terry Kath and Michael Bolton's name should NEVER be mentioned in the same sentance as Terry's, i will agree on Bill Medley and i love Robert Palmer, Robert Lamm is as good as Terry

  • @MotownMaster Barry Gibb is technically a better singer than Terry. Terry has more soul, that's why he's better. Don't knock Barry Gibb just cuz he went Disco. Barry Gibb is a legend of rock'n'roll. Chicago went faggy sappy pop in the 80s, worse than the Bee Gees ever were.

  • Yep

Both my brother and I, still not quite in junior high school, thought this was a black guy singing.

A phenomenal guitarist AND a voice like that...it only makes his senseless early departure all the more crushing.

  • so simplistic, but so really deep.....Kath is the man.

  • but ,why

  • Hey kitakashiwa! why dont you go do the same....tonight
