  • I'm learning this P&F as part of an audition in May and I'm having some trouble with it, so does anyone have any tips about playing it? I've only played through the first page of the prelude (I just started it today) and I'm struggling with playing it through without stopping.

  • Good!

  • Omg this piece is amazing

  • The Praeludium IX played by S. Richter has such wonderful round colors with a rare concept of phrasing from beginning to end with tension and musical diversities ! Everything is clear, in place with almost no pedal, details but without the pitfalls of "demonstrating the how to do it” or "what I can do" practiced by so many pianists or clavichordists. Music Flows, right taste, measure, retinue…everything. Thank you for posting this video.

  • *clap clap*

  • this piece - the prelude should be examined for its melodies; and the fugue - for its entries and inverted pedal points and opportunities to rip up Wikpaedia !

  • what is a 1 semitone interval called?

  • It's a diminished 2nd.

  • @Pianoplayer002 Minor 2nd.

  • @Pianoplayer002 second minor

  • @Pianoplayer002 A minor 2nd.

  • @Pianoplayer002 it's called an augmented first :)

  • @Pianoplayer002 How come you skip prelude no 7 and 8? You no likey?

  • @NimbleTurtle13 Rather me forgetey :( I'll probably fix the rest of the preludes and fugues in the near future

  • of course there is. there are augmented, diminished, minor and major 2nds. a c to d flat would be a minor 2nd. a c to a d would be a major 2nd. c to d # : augmented. and c to d bb: diminished

  • augmented and diminished yes, but not major and minor 2nds. sorry but i'm right this time.

  • yes there are minor and major seconds

  • No, Not in western tonal harmony.

  • youre wrong im afraid. Minor + major second.

Minor 2nds feature in the phrygian mode for example.

  • this isn't modal though, i said western tonal harmony, 1600 onwards. A semitone.

  • look it up on wikipedia minor second = 1 semitone, major second = 2 semitone, minor third = 3, major third = 4, perfect fourth = 5 ( dim + aug fifth = 4 and 6 respectively), perfect fifth = 7 (6 and 8for aug and dim) etc, common knowledge, anybody who doesn't know is a noob.

Minor second could be considered dim second also, depends what context, but they are both the same semitone count,

  • @220392123

...there are both major and minor 2nds.

    Example: D to E is a major 2nd, D to D# or Eb is a major second.

  • @220392123 amigo, check your music theory. THere's something called a minor 2nd interval....darts!!

  • @220392123 No. A minor 2nd is a 1/2 step smaller than a major 2nd. Every major interval (2nd, 3rd, 6th, 7th, and their 8ves) has a corresponding minor interval that is a 1/2 step smaller.

  • I just love ALL of these - Please try and complete the whole set VERY SOON - And thanks for all the very hard work you have put in to make these truly magical pieces become even more entertaining.

  • Fugue starts at 1:05.

  • This Fugue makes my prostate brittle.

  • @ComradeCrackhead : Well. Now how about that!

  • @ComradeCrackhead sameee!!

  • @ComradeCrackhead The prelude is way more beautiful :)

  • And crazycrazycrazy1; yes, this version is played in f mayor, everything's transposed a minor second upwards...but anyway it rocks!!!

  • most ppl say the Prelude in E mayor's form is a two-part form, buy i think its actually divided in three sections beacuse of the cadences and the development of material in between from cc. 8 3rd beat to 15 1st beat. Do u guys agree??

  • Thank you for this video. I'd like to invite watching Nuccio Trotta's performances. An unknown pianist worth listening in to. Thanks.

  • WHOEVER CALLS THIS GUY A RETARD, SURE NEEDS SOME COUNCELING.

THIS GUY IS A VERY GOOD PIANIST, AND HE DESERVES SOME RESPECT.

    YES.

I AM TALKING TO YOU KINGSTRAVINSKY101.

HOW RUDE TO TALK TO HIM LIKE THAt.

YOU SHOULD Think about OTHER PEOPLE.

HE IS SO GREAT, THAT HIS VIDEO, WAS S-Corted to my Favorite's list.

    WHERE HE WILL STAY.

  • it's so fast though!

  • ughh I have to play this for exams and the fugue just about KILLS me; it is just SO hard to play.

  • LOL no one reads the title...Richter plays Bach. Richter is one of the most famous pianists in history.

  • Great Idea...to see the "sources" of Genius, and hear at the same time THE MASTERMAN.Thank YOU Pinoplayar002.

  • I love this it is beautiful!

  • your piano is a little off tune :P

  • I... give... up... I am not Richter! Gaah

  • seriously piano off tune????? its a fuckin recording by richter, plus its in russia, they are a little bit different on tuneing!

  • it's not out of tune, the whole thing is like transposed one whole note higher....isn't it?? or something, yeah. anyway this is beautiful :)

  • @JiGaRiCe Pianos are always out of tune

  • the prelude is 2 fast

  • Hahaha I still don't see how people can so utterly fail at reading the seven letter name in the title of this video. If I was Richter, I would be a ghost, but I am quite sure I am alive, at the moment.

  • brilliant

  • Julia says how come its in F major? but she loves the playing.

  • Oh my goodnes... I'm playing this piece and it is SO hard, especially the Fugue! ANY TIPS!!!

  • to play every day 12 hours! *-)

  • ahaha im playing it too and officially despise bach now.. i suppose practicing 12 hours a day may help...

  • Actually, i find that playing it fast is easier than playing it slowly... the faster you go, the less time there is for mistakes! Am getting better... i think...

  • What I'm doing it is practicing the soprano, alto and bass parts separately, and then 2 voices (eg sa, ab & sb). That way my articulation, dynamics, etc are all decided, the piece is memorised and it just takes a bit of slow practice to bring all three voices together.

  • Urgh, but its so hard to differenciate between the different voices! Sometimes the soprano looks like alto, the alto looks like bass and vice versa! I dunno... now i have to memorise it, *sigh*.

  • I know what you mean... luckily I have Sibelius4 so I just wrote out all three voices on separate staves.

  • Sounds neat... what is it?

  • Sibelius 4? It's a programme you can use to write music. I think a lot of modern composers use it. Expensive.

  • Why do you have it? I mean, if its so expensive. Is anyone you know a pro. composer?

  • I have it because I am a composer, though not pro, and an obsessive musician. And I USED to have some money ;)

  • Well lucky you then... What do you compose? Classical or like, random stuff?

  • classical. a mixture of minimalist/jazz/romantic styles. And some random stuff.

  • Haha, I like random stuff :)... Anyhow, must go practice my piano now ... *Sigh*

  • I can't combine the soprano and bass voices. -_- I can do Soprano and alto fine, alto and bass, but not soprano/bass. This is marvelous though. [:

  • Please raticida, it must be a joke!!!!

Search for Sviatoslav Richter in google, or something!!!

  • karl richter, excelent interpretation

  • Karl Richter?

  • karl richter is a german guy who plays barque music, but he only plays on a harpsichord. so raticida123456 doesnt know what the hell he is talking about and is probably high or just a simple retard.

  • Is your piano tuned differently than the usual tempered scale?

  • There is quality of orderliness about to fall apart here and there along with congenial swelling of grace-notes in semi-opaque luminescence that makes this prelude performance a true pleasure. He doesn't know how to perpetuate that mood in the fugual structure interpretively...But Hey...I'll take 1 for 2 here!

  • I think you're way off on the fugue, it's an upbeat climax, I don't sense that this particular feeling is best suited, what I love most about this fugue is the somewhat awkward rest after the two notes, as it allows me to shift to the counter subject.

  • Thanks for uploading! I'm learning to play this piece now.

  • just beautiful :]
